Where to Find a Puppy for Christmas?

I am going to give in and get my kids a puppy for Christmas. Does anyone know how to find puppies just born in time for Christmas? We prefer a smaller dog but that will be ok with kids. I guess they are no longer listing them on Craig's List & my online version of the Dallas classifieds isn't pulling up anything. Thanks for any advice you have!

What can I do next?

I do think the SPCA or another rescue organization is the best place, but I thought I'd let you know that they are still on craigslist. You must be looking in the wrong place. On the home page, the pet listings are on the top left side of the page under "Community" and "Pets". Lots of puppies there. It would be really nice to rescue a dog who needs a home from a shelter, though, instead of just putting money in someone's pocket, right?

Just FYI, I don't know any reputable breeders that sell "Christmas puppies". You would be better to buy the kids some supplies for the future dog and then after Christmas make it a family decision. That way you can find the perfect breed (or mutt).
Good luck!

Check SPCA and rescue groups. Know what you are looking for FIRST.

Size, allergies, amount of time needed (THEY ALL NEED TIME), $$$$ for updates on shots, food,

A puppy is a great addition to a family.....think of it as an addition to the family as in amount of care, money, need, YEARS in your family....etc.

A new pup is like a new baby.....waking often during the night for food and potty. If you are not ready for a 10+ yr committment............and responsibility......DO NOT do that to a new Pup.

A.,
The SPCA would be a great place to go.

Just know that alot of people give up their puppies after Christmas... like in January. You would not believe how many people get tired of them once they've had them for a few days.

I always recommend NOT getting one on Christmas, but later. However, if you've already made up your mind and you're not one of those people that thinks of them as a decoration but as a family member then go for it.

Humane Society probably will not let you adopt at Christmas. SPCA or Furever Friends probably will.

Funny you should ask...My mom's Wire Hair Terrier is due to have puppies in 2-3 weeks-of course they will have to wean for 6 weeks. She is going to want to sell them as this was a suprise. They will be wire hair (medium to small dogs) and a (?) i can't rememebr the name of the dog. It is full breed black small dog with an underbite and nig eyes. Does that ring a bell? If you are interested, I will get better info. Thanks. Maybe this can help-

Please Visit a local shelter. They can help you make a good decision on needs for you family. It makes me cringe when I here Puppies for Christmas. Shelters will soon have a huge increase in young animals after the hollidays.

I know you are probably thinking, you do not want to hear preaching from us, but over population and puppy mills are such a huge disgusting problem. Please don't let our pushyness or stubborness get in the way of the truth.

I suggest making a sweet card and wrapping in box for under the tree. Then start researching and looking as a family effort, and educated effort. Pet stores that sell puppies get them from puppy millers, regardless of what the say. Many rescues will not even adopt out at Christmas do to having to many dogs turned back in the past. Most shelters will.

Give the gift of life, save a dog from a shelter.

Check with the local humane society. They get dogs and puppies in all the time, they'll also know the dog's health status and personality. They may take your name and number and let you know when they get new dogs in. Both of our dogs were Dallas Humane Society dogs and they're great.

craigslist does still have some, also richardson animal shelter does not list on petfinder. Petharbor.com is a good one too. Don't let these people get you down, if you are a responsible pet owner, it will not be a problem. Don't settle for any breed, research the breed on animalplanet.com or its me or the dog, through animal planet or dogs 101, all have great videos, research on what breed is best for you. Sometimes you might have to wait, but others, you won't. GOod luck.

You can search on www.petfinder.com. This site has animal shelters and pet rescues. You can search by your area, age of animal, breed, etc. You can also search the site to find the shelters or pet rescues near where you live. Then just visit or contact those near you and visit. They always have puppies and they may be not ready to go home yet. Sometimes the puppies go quick and never make it to the shelter's online posting. In any event if you visit and find the perfect puppy you could always say Santa delivered early because your puppy was so excited to come home. PetSmart generally has animals for adoption on Saturdays. Good luck!

Whatever you do, don't buy from a pet store. They sell puppy mill dogs. Awful, awful practice.

If you know what breed you want, look into a rescue society for that specific dog. Good luck!
