How Do I Do a Background Check?

I need to do a background check (on myself!) but am not sure how to go about it. Do I contact the police or is it an agency that does it? I've done it before, many years ago, so I know it is possible, I am just not sure how. Any help greatly appreciated. Thanks R.

Naps at Day-care

Hi All, I have a 6 months old baby girl, who started day-care about 2 weeks ago. Since than she is taking (good case scenario) two 20 min. naps btw. 7am and 4pm. When daddy picks her up and takes her homes, she takes a nap from 4;30-5:30, and then she goes to bed around 8:30-9pm, and sleeps usually until around 6:45 (and then I need to wake her up). Any ideas how to help her take a nap at daycare?

Gifted and Talented School

My daughter tested above the 9th stanine on the GATES test and was invited to attend a new school. Liberty Talented and Gifted Elementary school. It will be a full time gifted school for kids who tested only in the 9th stanine or higher. She will have to be bused to this school from her old one. Have any of you had children who have attended such a school? She will be in 3rd grade and has been in gifted classes since kindergarten. Do you think its worth it at this young of an age (she will be 8 in August) ? She does really enjoy her...

To Home-School or Not ??

Hi there. I need advice. My husband and I are pretty determined that we want to home-school. My son will be 5 in a week, so he technically could be in kindergarden in August. We also have a daughter that will be 3 in July, and a 5 mos old, too. So-here are my questions? How do we even begin to get started? Who do you contact to get info? What do we do to still keep him active with kids his own age? He has been going to pre-school 2 days a week -- but now all those kids are going off to "school". How do you balance...

Nanny Share / FT Nanny

We have a FABULOUS NANNY and are hoping to share her with another Evanston family (preferably) or find another full-time position for her. Aida has it all - warmth, dependability, sound judgment, energy, initiative, tons of experience (including all ages, twins, kids with special needs, seniors, and nannyshares), formal training in early childhood development, excellent English and driving, Spanish, a barber's license (really!), a Certified Nursing Assistant certificate, CPR, non-smoking, and more. Drop-in Play Place (Without Mom)

HI Mom's, I have a friend with a 4-year old who would lke a couple of hours alone to run errands, get her hair done, etc. Do you have any suggestions for drop-in locations where they will watch your child for a couple of hours in a fun, clean, well-supervised location? She doesn't care where it is in the Chicago area (she lives downtown) because she'll shop nearby or find a hair salon to have her hair cut near the children's center. Day care centers want a daily commitment, and she only wants an occassional drop-in. Thanks!

Preparing for Kindergarten

My oldest daughter will be starting kindergarten in a few weeks and I'm in a flurry trying to get everything ready. Gathering school supplies, clothes, making after school care/child care arrangements, making sure I have all her records with the school. I started to think about it that we are doing everything within our power to make this new transition as easy for her as possible but no one is preparing me. :) I was looking at the Welcome to the School Letter that I received in the mail and almost burst into tears. I remember bringing...

Preschool- If They Don't Go, How Do You Prepare Them for Kindergarten?

My son is in preschool for the second year. So far I have been happy until recently. He is being bullied and I believe his class is under staffed. I spent the day with him and just watched. I really don't think the teacher has enough time to spend with each child. What they are doing I could probably do at home. Do any of you have your preschoolers at home and what type of things do you do with them? What should they know before kindergarten? Thanks

Is There a Pre Pre K?

Hi I heard that there is a pre pre-k for children under 3 years old. Does anyone know of a school that offers something educational (not day care) for kids under 3. My daughter is 2 yrs old, I would like to put her in a class that would prepare her for pre k (and give me some free time, and it would get her to be less attached to 'mommy') thanks!

Help with Kindergarten Readiness

After my daughter was in daycare from 3 months to almost 3 years, my husband and I decided to become a one working parent family. I am now a stay at home mom, have been for about a year. My daughter isn't going to go to Pre-K. She is very smart, recognizes all of her ABC's, can say them, can count to 15 and can count backwards from 10. She can also write all of her ABC's (in capitals) and we are working on her writing her numbers. She knows all her colors and shapes, she can cut with scissors (but she cna't really cut anything that makes...

Sick Child Care

Hi, All, What do you do if you work or attend school full-time, spouse is not around and your young children are mildly ill (with a slight fever, runny nose, cough, etc.) and thus cannot attend school? Here's my situation: I will start a psychology PhD program this fall. For my fellowship/stipend, I must take at least 9 courses per year, T.A. 3 sessions (quarters) per year, and do research. As well as a student, I am a 40+ mother of two children, almost 3 and 4 years old. My husband, a touring musician, is out of town (country)...

Social Phobia, Me Again.

As a child I was a social outcast, a nerd. I was overweight, had horrible acne, bad perm, oversized, thick glasses. I was a mess. I was a complete introvert but managed to have a few friends. One became my best friend and was very loyal to me. She moved away when we were in highschool but as adults we still talk every few months. I was depressed a lot during the teen years. Once I lost the weight, my skin cleared up, and I got contacts, I felt slightly more confident. My reputation for being a nerd followed me into high school as I...
