What Are My Chances?

Ex-boyfriend and I just had sex a couple of weeks ago. I have the Mirena IUD so I wasn't too concerned at the time. In the last few days, though, I've become extremely fatigued and a little bloated feeling. My main concern is that my breasts are VERY tender and I can't seem to find any other possible cause for that other than pregnancy. The IUD has caused me not to have periods so I can't go by whether or not I get a period (I'm not even sure when my period WOULD be if I were to have one). I have had my IUD for almost 3 years now (lasts for 5 years). I took a really cheap preg test just a moment ago and it came up negative. Is it too soon to tell?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I don't have a period, so I can't really wait for it (it's not going to come whether I'm preg or not). I would've thought that the symptoms were just PMS.. even though I don't have the bleeding, maybe my hormones were still at work and causing it. BUT, in the 3 years I've had my IUD, I've never experienced these types of symptoms before.

Thanks everyone for the wonderful advice. I spoke again with my ex yesterday----we only had sex the one time 2 weeks ago and I've only ever been with 3 people (the last one was over a year ago) and he said if it's positive he's going to demand a DNA test. We're not on speaking terms now, unfortunately.. I'm debating just not even telling him one way or another. I even had told him beforehand that if he didn't want anything to do with the baby, I was fine with that. Even still he was very angry and just plain out mean. I told him I was going to be affected as well and he said "I'm thinking about ME right now."

Guess it's better not to involve him after all.

M.,

With my last pregnancy I took a pregnancy test from Wal-Mart and it came back negative. I KNEW I was pregnant (this was my 6th one) but after I saw the negative line I began to doubt. I waited a weekend and tried again, with a better test, and it came up positive right away. Most likely my first test was either from a bad lot or it was too early.

There's a great calculator at www.maybemom.com that will tell you when you can take a pregnancy test reliably. It's part of their ovulation calculator.

M.,
I can't tell you what your chances are, but I can say stay calm. Your symptoms sound like you could be about to have a period or be pregnant. Either way, getting upset is not healthy. If you don't know by now, I would suggest waiting a week then calling your doctor for a checkup.

There might be other factors to make you feel this way. Have you started gardening or doing any work with bug sprays/pesticides or spring cleaning? The chemicals in those contain xenoestrogens that can cause breast tenderness and fatigue like you describe. Other things to look at are changes in your diet, cosmetics, bath products, house cleaners... all of these things also contain xenoestrogens but in a smaller dose but if you've had multiple changes in these things, all together they can add up.

It could be PMS Symptoms, I never use to experience them in any form until after I had kids, My boobs getting tender are a huge one, I can't even lay on my stomach! Could be happening now because it is not natrual to not have a period so your body is responding in different ways.

It is too soon to tell especially if its a tubal pregnancy it wont show positive for awhile- get a blood test that would be the most accurate thing to do.Hopefully you didnt get an infection from him that is affecting the IUD.maybe you should get checked for an infection if you are not pregnant.

Well, I have had my IUD for 20 months and after the first 2 hadn't had a period until about 5 months ago. I started experienceing the exact same symptoms about 3 months before I started. I called my doctor and was told that not everyone actually stops getting their period. I would definately call your doctor though. I do know of a few people who became pregnant while having an IUD. Anything is always possible.

I would definitely take another test. When my husband and I were trying to conceive, I took a pregnancy test which came out negative and then three days later took another one which came out positive. Now, I am 6 months pregnant. I know it must be hard if the potential father doesn't want a baby but you shouldn't avoid the issue. Good luck to you and I hope everything works out for the best.

Hi M.,
How worry free you could be had you stayed clear of the ex. What even possessed you?

In any case, the IUD is known to cause many uncomfortable symptoms as well as those you describe. You didn't mention how long you have had the implant. Give it time and it may pass, otherwise see your doctor.

As for the exaggerated melodramatics of the ex, tell him three's a charm*

Best of luck to you.

It's a little early to worry and the pg test is probably too early as well, but I wouldn't freak out just yet.

And if the ex is the kind of guy to say something like that, maybe you should go ahead and tell him just to get him out of the way! It takes two to tango. He could always use a condom, or God forbid, keep it in his pants.

Sex is a big responsibility. If you can't deal with the potential consequences, then don't do it. A single mom with two kids has enough on her plate; you and the ex should both think about what you're doing if neither of you are prepared...

Sorry, you probably didn't want a sermon, but there are so many people out there who can't even have kids, that I get a little perturbed when somebody says something that tacky about having one. He should grow up and he's probably not good enough for you or your kids anyway. Buy a vibrator! ;-)

I don't want to worry you, but when we got preganant I used one of the cheapy pregnancy tests first and got a false negative. I'd go and get a better test or go to your doctor and get the professional one done.

Your hormones cycle could still be causing periodic premenstral symptoms even though you're not having a period. I would wait another 2-3 more weeks, test again and see your doctor of the HPT comes out positive or if you are still nervous.

Go buy a not so cheap test and do one. Read on the box and see how many days after conception it would detect it. I think it is pretty quick (within a week likely). If you are still having problems after a negative reading, wait another week and do another test. If problems persist, call a local pregnancy counseling center and ask them for assistance to see what's happening.

try another home pregnancy test (hospitals use the same ones you can buy in the store with different packaging) -- use a first morning specimen (since the urine is concentrated and so is everything in it -- including the pregnancy hormone).

Good luck!
