Toddler Loves Playing with Water

My toddler loves to sit at the tub playing with the running faucet, or sit on our sink and play with the running faucet. She screams if I try to shut it off. Needless to say, this favorite hobby of hers can run up our water bill.

Funny thing is, she won't sit IN the water to play. She hates baths. But she'll happily play with the running water as long as she's not in it!!!

If I put her near the sink/tub filled with water, she will scream until we put the FAUCET on. She has to have the water running!!!

Any suggestions how she can play with running water and the same time not waste so much water?
Thanks!

What can I do next?

Sounds just like my 3 year old. We fill the kitchen sink up and put bubbles in the water and give her cups. It works for us. Some times we even give her a plastic plate to wash. Just a thought! Good luck

I would buy her a toy watering can. My kids LOVE those!

The other moms have good ideas about home and I would like to encourage you to join the Dupage Children's musem. They have a water table that's out of this world.

What about a water container with a spigot? I'm not sure where you could put it, maybe on the kitchen counter and let your daughter play at the kitchen sink.

ND,

Our son is obsessed with water. Lakes, rivers, puddles, toilet, sink, washer...whatever. Lol.

What I've been letting him do is stand on a chair next to me while I wash the dishes. He takes two plastic bottles and just fills them up and dumps them out. It takes longer to do the dishes, but he's right next to me and having fun. Worth it to me. :)

We make a water table using just a Sterilite storage container (shoebox size or bigger for more kids). Then they can play with measuring cups, stacking cups, etc., pouring the water and splashing. We put a beach towel under it when doing it inside. Have put bubble bath in it as well to play with bubbles.

Have you considered a safe fountain (you can find them anywhere.. like Bed, Bath, & Beyond, etc)? Also, this may seem silly, but there are water bowls for pets that have a stream of water constantly recirculating to keep the water fresh. It might be enough to keep her busy for hours while not running up your water bill!!

Fill the bathtub with water and let her play with cups. Or you could fill a container with water and let her sit in the bathtub to play with it. That would help with some of the mess. Show her that she can make running water and it doesnt' have to come from the faucet. You may also want to get the covers for the knobs so she can't turn the water on.

Depending on the age you could use a timer. "You can play with running water until the timer dings". After that the faucet is turned off. She will probably fuss the first few times but after awhile she will get over it. Running water is very wasteful and can be a good life lesson to teach her.
