Son Having Trouble in Kindergarten

My son is so excited about being in school. He looks forwarding to going in the morning and seems happy when he comes home. He attends AM Kindergarten, KinderDay in the afternoon and then Latchkey until I pick him up after work. Having been in a very structured day care for the past 3 years, he seems to have made the transition very well - even though the changes to his schedule have been pretty big. He rarely had behavior problems in day care but the feedback from the elementary school is horrible. Every day - literally - we have...

Input from Moms of Autistic Spectrum Kids About Help Wanted from Extended Family

I have a grandson on the autistic spectrum and belong to a support group for grandparents. I would love input from you mothers (and fathers) with kids on the spectrum. What are some of the problems you have with extended family? What would you like from them? I write for a Parent Coaches blog on the subject of grandparents' roles today, relationships with adult children, and such. I want to help grandparents like myself learn how to be most helpful with special needs kids, since I hear from both sides about communication difficulties, hurt...

WHY Do They Teach Sight Words Instead of Phonics?

Perhaps this is a silly question, but it bothers me. I'm asking here because there are a lot of teachers here, and a lot of moms who have done the "school thing". WHY are they trying to teach my son to memorize words instead of sounding them out? I'm a great reader, was always ahead of the "norm" (reading classics on my own in 4th grade, read many required reading books for high school before I entered middle school). I learned the phonetic way. Now there's this sight word stuff. Basically he's supposed to memorize it. I don't want him to...

PC Or Mac???

My PC is approaching the end of its life and I am trying to figure out what my next computer will be - a PC or a Mac. To be honest I am leaning toward a Mac because I love the photo & video programs on the Mac. Plus the whole Vista thing on the PC really scares me. I know Macs cost a bit more, but what do you think, is it worth it? I use my computer for internet, email, address book, word, excel, publishing, music, photos (lots) & some video. What would you do?
