Hi moms, this is kinda embarassing but I have never had a yeast infection. How do I know for sure, I have done some internet research for symptoms and treatments and it sounds like this may be it, do I need to see a Dr. if i'm not sure? are there any treatments that may have worked quickly and effectively for some of you.

What can I do next?

Go to the family planning section of the pharmacy. Amongst the yeast infection products, there is a self/home yeast infection test. It costs about $16.00, which is pricey, but less than a doctor's visit. If you have it, you should try the one time only monostate product. The generic is the same. Good luck. I know they are awful.

Hi K.
I believe they have a test in the drug stores now that can tell you if you have a yeast infection.

I think there is a over the counter test that you can do to tell if you have a yeast infection

The most common symptoms of yeast infections are burning and itching, itching, itching. You can get them after being on an antibiotic. My one-year old had one and she also had red bumps (like diaper rash but up front).

Monistat works wonders on adults. The 3-day or 7-day treatment is best. The one-day just isn't enough.

However, if you are pregnant, please see your doctor before trying any OTC treatment. I had one when I was pregnant and the doctor would not allow me to use Monistat (she recommended Gynelotrimin). However, once I finally found that, I didn't need it. I ate yogurt instead. Yoplait makes some decent tasting yogurt (and I hate yogurt).

I only had one while i was pregnant and then one after, the first one the dr perscribed one of those monistat 7 day things you do at home, so when i got the one after, i just went and bought one (but i got the walmart brand, worked great). I was red itchy and a white discharge. They also have some that are done in a few days instead of 7. But, if you really are unsure then i would see the dr. Hope this helps.

Hi K.,

If your discharge is thick and white and looks like cottage cheese (and sometimes smells like bread dough), you probably have a yeast infection. That is the most common. There are some homeopathic suppositories that are often available over the counter at the drug store for yeast infections (also called candida). This has worked for me. The drug store also has some other, stronger treatments on the shelf that will cure candida, but I find that the homeopathic remedy, coupled with changing my diet does the trick. Which ever treatment you choose, you need to continue it for about 5-7 days. If you can't get to the drug store, try packing the area with plain yogurt. It sounds wierd, but it works by introducing good bacteria to the area. You can also pick up an acidopholis suppliment at the drug store. It is a harmless nutritional suppliment which helps restore and balance the good bacteria in your system. I've been taking it daily for years.

I quit getting yeast infections when I cut out most sugar and white flour from my diet. Try cutting out those things until your symptoms go away

I had trouble delineating between a yeast infection and urinary tract infection. The symptoms are different- yeast burning and urinary tract also burning, but urine frequency.
I have had to have doctor treatment, which are antioboiotics, but different ones for each infection.

Recomendation: See your gynecologist.

I've only had a couple of them, and my symptoms were itchiness/soreness in the vaginal area and a thicker discharge than normal. I used the Monistat at home treatments and those did the trick. I would suggest trying one of those first, and if its not gone within a few days I'd go see your doc as it could be something else.

I used to get them when I took antibiotics. It'd start as itchiness that got worse and then was joined by burning. Definitely no fun! I tried to itching cream stuff for that part, but it didn't really work for me. To clear it up I used the Monistat cream (make sure you do it at night just before you go to bed, not when you'll be up walking around!). After it happened a few times, my doctor prescribed a pill (don't recall the name as it's been years) which I only had to take once, if I'm not mistaken, to clear up the condition.

nothing to be embarassed about - it's normal for women to get yeast infections. some of the symptoms include a white, cottage-cheese like discharge and itchiness down there. you don't really need to foot the money for a doc since they now sell over the counter remedies at wal-mart or any drug store. just look in the women's hygiene section.

For the first time, you really should go to see your doctor. That way they can confirm you are right. In the future, then yes the OTC treatments work fine. I once had an allergic reaction to one though, which as you can imagine is the LAST place you ever want to have an allergic reaction!!!! You should also drink 100% cranberry juice and eat yogurt (with live cultures). Avoid dairy and cut down breads for a while too. Good luck, I know it can really hurt!

For yeast treatment there is a homeopathic product on the market that you can get over the counter, I forget the name of it but most drug stores carry it, but the yogurt seems to work well.

For your first time, you should really see the doc, but for some relief- MOnistat used to be the prescription strength medication that is now OTC.

If this helps, then it probably is just a yeast infection, so you definately want to add yogurt to your diet-this alone can do wonders- if you don't like yogurt you can buy the vitamin or mineral that has the same benefit at WalMart-ask the pharmicist- to take in pill form.

If the Monistat doesn't help or it gets worse you definately should get to the doctor. Good luck..

From my experience there is a cheesy looking discharge and incredible itching from a yeast infection. I have always been told to eat yogurt but I have never really done so to know whether that works, but I have used the over-the-counter meds like Monistat and got some relief. Have you been on antibiotics? That was how I got it and it seems that you can relieve the symptoms but it doesn't leave until the medicine is stopped.

The over the counter medicines work fine, but my doctor prescribed a pill for me once the worked so much better. It's just a pill you take one time and my symptoms cleared up a lot faster. If it's not a hastle to go to your doc, I'd say go and ask for that pill. Plus, it's safer to go and get checked out just in case it's not a yeast infection. There are other things out there that are similar, so if it's not, you may need to try a different medication.

i have to agree with the first time going to the dr. but if you are suffering (and i know that you are) and it will be a few days before your appt. i would go ahead and start the monistat, to get relief and some cure started and then have your doc mack sure that there isn't something more serious. although if the monistat works then you will know it was yeast because it won't cure any thing else. then i strongly suggest that you either eat yogurt everyday and/ or take the acidopholis evry day ! i used to get them "all" the time . since i started taking the acidopholis no problems in years! some women are just more prone to them than others. if you don't think that you can be faithful in eating the yogurt every single day, take the supplement. good luck

Eat natural yougert. The healthy bacteria in it will help....add some of your faveorite healthy cereal to it for taste. Cut out as much processed sugar from your diet. Yes, do go to see the DR because it may just be a yeast infection or a sign of something else. With this being your first you should ALWAYS get checked out ASAP! Your DR can help you quick and fast. Ask about Diflucan treatment, just one pill!
