Hi,

I have to plan our next trip to visit my family in Germany.....

Usually we go every other year around Christmas.....

My dad's 70th birthday is in October 2011 and it will be celebrated big time.....all kinds of family will gather....

Now I most certainly wanna go, but I just had to realize that my oldest would have to miss at least 1-2 weeks of school (we wouldn't be going that far away for just a weekend).....

Is there a possibility for him to get an excused absence for that long ???

Has anyone of you had that situation before and did it work out ???

Thanks for any advice !!!!

PS. My son is 9 and will be in 4th Grade.

What can I do next?

I knew a girl in HS who left school for 3 weeks to see her family in germany. She was able to get all her school work and had no problem being gone. I would say contact the school asap and ask. The office workers should be there now so like I said just give them a call and see what is needed. Explain the situation! Have fun!

I'm not sure how old your children are but I took my children out of school for two weeks to go to England. I discussed it with his teacher and asked if he could take some work with him. She told that travelling is educational also and can bring about so many learning experiences that they could never get in the classroom. My eldest son just did a diary of hi tinme in England and we kept up the reading while we were there. He also sent a postcard which his teacher and friends got a kick out of.
I would say just talk to the teacher and I'm sure they will be understanding because of the circumstances.

You don't say how old the child is, but I Would think that you could talk to the teacher and ask for the school work that the child would be missing during the trip. You could also ask how you could use the trip to Europe for a learning situation, maybe extra written reports on Germany as a country, it's history, or historical sites that you could visit while you are there. Maybe a bit of a lesson in speaking German from the relatives? There are so many things that could be incorporated into it, depending upon the age of your child, I would think that the teacher would be thrilled to be able to have your child have such a wonderful experience!! The only problem that I see is that this is going to occur so shortly after the beginning of the school year...you are going to need to go in as soon as school starts and present this issue to the teacher!!! I wonder if there is staff at the school during the summer and if you could talk with the principal and find out who the teacher is going to be and have some extra time to discuss this with him or her?
Good luck and enjoy your trip...what a wonderful adventure!!!

My cousin and her family (4 children...9,8,6,2) live in England.

Until the older girls were school age they split time living in US and England. her husband's business is in both England and US. He comes here more often but they still all come around Feb and stay 6 weeks.

Her girls are not "excused", but she has the school work that is to be covered and done when they get back. They also do some sort of report on what they are doing in the US.

I also substitute teach and there is a family in my neighborhood with 4 children from Columbia. Their dad is a professional soccer player here. In Dec, we give assignments to those children and they are gone about 6 weeks as well, however, winter break is part of the time they are gone.

Hope that helps.

Just ask for school work in advance. The teacher(s) should be more than happy and willing to give the work to you if you explain your situation. Most of my family lives in Italy and I go to visit them every Christmas. My school and teachers never had a problem with it. I just get all my homework, or even just keep in touch through e-mail (that's a great idea if you'll have access to a computer, since the teacher could attach documents and everything). It's such a wonderful experience to see the world and your family. I miss living in Italy...My villa was beautiful (: I hope you have fun and I hope that your father has an amazing birthday!
