My son is one year old and the last month and half would not sleep in his crib. He is long for his age (32 inches). He seems to sleep fine in a bed. He sleeps on the pull out bed from our couch for naps and most times during the week at night. He has been walking since he was arund 8 months. I am wondering when / if I should try a toddler bed?

What can I do next?

Our general rule has been that when they're not safer in a crib (i.e., they climb out) it is time for a toddler bed. That has been a different age for each of our kids. I have wanted them in the crib as long as possible so I didnt' ahve to worry about them wandering aroudn. If he is already doing well on a pull-out bed, though, go for it! Maybe it woudl help him sleep better at night in his own room.

At 15 months my daughter was climbing into her crib and I was scared that it wouldn't be long before she tried to climb out and get hurt. I switched her to a twin bed shortly after that...by 18 months.
We took her with us to go pick out the matress and sheets and let her "help" daddy take down her crib and put up the bed. She was super excited ot sleep in her "big girl bed" We have never had a problem with her getting up and playing and I think she fell out of bed once (even with the railings, but since the matress was on the floor she didn't get hurt)
I know some kids refuse to stay in a bed so many parents suggest you keep them in a crib as long as you can. Only you can determine what is best for you. Good luck!

It sounds like he's ready for a bed to me! I put my kids in beds as soon as they began to climb out. I never bought a toddler bed, I went straight for twin beds and used railings.

That was about the age my son started sleeping in one. I had this plan, you see, to transition him into it, so by 2, he would be out of the crib. Needless to say, it didnt work. The moment it was put up, he HAD to sleep in it. My daughters, I took a bit longer with, but they never have crawled out, so its not big deal. They know when they are ready and they will let you know. Good Luck!

I have 3 daughters age 7, 4 1/2 and 14 months. The youngest is still in her crib and I haven't had any problems with her trying to get out yet, but I am expecting it any time. When it was time to transition out of the crib for the older 2, I simply removed one side rail of my crib and used it as a toddler bed with a safety rail that you can get anywhere. The rail ensured they couldn't fall out during the night and also reminded them they needed to stay in bed. Then as they got a little older, we were able to put them in a twin or full size bed without any worries or the added expense of a toddler bed.

We put my daughter in a toddler bed when she was about 2, but your son sounds ready now. If you are afraid he will fall out of bed, there are a lot of toddler beds with rails. I would try it out and see how he does. I also have known people who take the mattress from the crib and just set it on the floor. You could always try that first!

K.,
For our daughter's 1 year birthday last year we got her a toddler bed, mainly because we had another baby on the way in a few months and didn't want to buy another crib. We started off letting her sit in it and get used to it, then took naps in it and within a few months she was sleeping in it. So you might want to give it a try.
