I got sick of the toy clutter at my house & told my family (mom, sister, ect.) that gift certificates to fun outings (zoo, explorium, train) would be nice & we would handle the toys.

HI M.! Go to toysrus, they have a birthday registry just like for baby registry. That way you can select some things you think your son would like! He might like the GEO Trax train set. or a small tricycle. large legos, building blocks, and definitely some books! A backpack to carry toys around in the car with, I would also ask someone for a zoo membership- we can go together if you want ;),they are cheap and well worth it, same for Discovery zone! Just some thoughts!

My son for his second birthday got a small keyboard with buttons that do sound effects and play some songs. He's 8 now and still plays with it. His 18 month old brother has made it one of his favorites too.

You'll have to put up with some noise, so my son was trained first on how to turn down the volume button!

My kids liked:

the little farm houses you can get for their age group
balls
Mega blocks
Stacker rings similar to these (http://www.dooyoo.co.uk/kids-equipment/tomy-happy-stack/)
Shape sorters

They seem to like chubby little things they could carry around with them, boys especially, LOL.

Have a wonderful time celebrating this little guys bday!

My youngest son is 2 1/2 and right now since it's nice out he loves playing in the sandbox and playing with garden tools (hoe, watering can, shovels). Since he has an older brother, he wanted his own bike instead of his tricycle, so last weekend we bought him a 12" bike...which you can get for $20-$30 and it was a big hit. Inside he enjoys playing with the Little People and Weeble playsets and he loves tools. We got him a little chainsaw for Christmas which was right after he turned 2 and he still loves it. We have 2 boys so it's much harder to find stuff for my youngest, but there is tons out there to choose from.

I had the best luck with playsets. My boys loved the little tykes (it may be fisher price) castle and knights set. It was a very sturdy toy that has stood the test of time. There were lots of accessory sets that could be bought to extend the original set. These were of kings and their horses, catapults, more knights, etc. It was a great set. There are versions of this at toys-r-us. If you can't find the exact set, then maybe you could choose something simular. My boys carried their little men wherever we went (in the car, to the store, visiting friends or going to the doctor... everywhere!) The sets are great for building imaginations. I have the castle put away now waiting for the day we can get it out for our grandchildren.
You might consider riding toys too. Two is a great time for the first scooter bikes. They're really inexpensive too.
Congrats on your son's birthday. Hug him lots, they grow up too fast!

Do you have Duplo Legos already? I'm not one to add to toys, but this is a perfect age for building - Legos, bristle blocks, Lincoln logs, etc. A small riding toy, books, or anything to be working on fine motor skills - even crayons and a coloring book - are great at this age.

tricycle, swing set (we got our son one at 2 yrs), riding toys, games, blocks, puzzles, tools ( my son loves working with his tools), they have a tool bench now and tool box, balls, alphabet and number toys, DVD's, clothing (think ahead till the next season if you have what he needs now), sidewalk chalk, arts and crafts, music in a box (good for learning), etc Think ahead, there is until Christmas before he can get anything else so make the most of it now. If there is nothing he really needs, ask for money for his bank. I love when my kids get money instead of toys, I save it all for their first car!

THe Geotrax train stuff (they can get as little or much as they like) was a great hit with our little guy. At 4, he still loves it! Books are also always a great request.

2 yr olds are busy! That also want to imitate. How about a kitchen, with a shopping cart to push and pots, pans and food.

Take him to Toys R Us and let him wander around and look at the toys. Keep track of what he seems interested in. Go back later and buy something he really liked that is in your price range. That was how we knew which tricycle to buy my son for Christmas.

Hey M.,
Sorry this is late, but I just thought of what was a super great hit for my son's second birthday and he still plays with it sometimes. Made by Kiddieland, at Target or Walmart, one of those little cars that they sit on and push around with their feet. It has a horn, steering wheel, siren sounds, etc. Someone gave this to my son and he loved and still does love it! And they are inexpensive and now my 8 month old daughter is even intrigued by it!
Good luck and happy 2nd birthday to your son!

I bought my granddaughter a Jump Smart Trampoline for her second birthday and she loves it. First toy all the children run too when they go to her home. It is a great way to let off some energy without jumping on the furniture and she is even getting little muscles in her legs. The only thing is that you have to order it. Toys R Us was great, got it here quickly ( as long as it is in stock)
Good luck!

Fisher Price Little People Noah's Ark!!!!!!

My kids ABSOLUTELEY LOVE Little People. The ark we got when my first daughter turned one. It took about a year for her to get the motor skills to really use it. My second child went right to that as a favorite toy. Now we collect the Little People. I have an entire wall mounted doll house full of all the different types of Little People. We have made like a complete village type set up.
Captain with ship, Zoo with talking matt, Circus with clown Fair with rides, Farm tractor, Tea Party House, RV Camper etc.
THEY ARE AWESOME!!! Hours of imaginary play, motor skills, etc.
My kids are 3 and 5 and they both still love their little people and are very creative with them all. I suggest anything that you can play with that isn't Plugged IN. Kids need to just play to develop their senses and skills and not be engrossed in electronic games.

also: scoot on/ride on toys, balls, building blocks, push toys.

Good Luck!
MJ

We got our daughter an art easel, one that can be raised up as they grow taller. She absolutely loves it! She draws on it every single day, with markers, crayons, chalk, anything. It has a dry erase board on one side and a chalk board on the other. It uses rolls of white paper. In nice weather we put it out on our porch and use paints. We got the idea from some friends' little boy at his birthday. It is a gift that will be used for many years to come.

If he hasn't asked for anything specific, why don't you just put some money in a savings for him. You can get him a few little things to wrap up like bubbles or a truck that he can push around or colors or coloring book. I wouldn't spend alot of money right now because he is so young. You will have plenty of time in the next several years that he will need things. I would put more of it in a savings for him. He will be 16 one of these days and you live in Murfreesboro so he will want one of those little popular Honda cars all souped up. That seems to be really popular around here. He will thank you more at 16 than at 2. Trust me.... it will be a good choice and a good investment.
