The student receives PT (physical therapy) and is able to communicate very well. The student needs to wear orthotics/orthosis as as per orthotist's mandated wearing schedule. The student refuses to wear them. What should the school do?

What can I do next?

You are either a student using us as guinea pigs or one the most jacked up trolls out there.

Care to connect the dots cause we are not known to play nice for long unless someone explains the rules.

Oh, discuss it with the parents, duh!

And this is why I love Riley!!

Andrew!!!

You've learned to use question marks! And moved into a new quarter, apparently. Last quarter was obviously a lower level psych class. This time what? ECE?

I'm confused by the question too. What role do you play in this? My It should be discussed with the school (teachers, school nurse, whoever needs to know) and a plan of action taken if the student doesn't comply. This is a case by case situation. If he doesn't wear it maybe he is "homeschooled" until he does or the schedule is more manageable.

You don't give much info on the type of school or what age/grade. But, I don't think it would be the school's responsibility. Teachers are there to teach, not enforce doctor's orders. IMO

The school should only do what is in the child's IEP or 504 Plan per the child's PPT meetings.

*PPT = Planning and Placement Team meeting
*IEP = Individual Education Plan
*504 Plan = another type of education plan for children who need adjustments and considerations made because of issues that affect their schooling, but are not typically learning delayed

Are you from the school or are you this child's parent? Either way, I think the school and the parent need to have a conversation. Ultimately, the parent needs to decide what is required and help the school develop a plan to guarantee that the parents' wishes are followed.

If the parent insists on wearing the orthotics as prescribed, the school needs to find a way to do that. Maybe the parents need to develop consequences for the child if he refuses to wear them (take away TV, favorite toys, dessert, etc - something that will upset the kid enough so that he will wear them in order to avoid the penalty).

I also think that there are times that adults need to truly act like adults and insist that rules be followed. Don't put up with the child refusing to wear them, just as you wouldn't put up with a child at school who refused to sit quietly at their desk when it was time to work. The teacher/therapist needs to force the child to wear them, even if it means putting them back on every 10 seconds. Eventually, the child will learn that fighting is futile and the orthotics will stay on.

Not sure, but I'm sure there's somewhere in their manual that tells them what protocol is.
