Olympics mania is still going strong in my home. Right now my DD is watching the 2012 Equestrian Events footage, again, all countless hours of it. This is the affordable event she has selected as her goal for 2020.
What Olympic events are your kids dreaming about entering? How far are you going to help them pursue that goal?
If there's ever an induction of Lego-building as a sport, Kiddo would be totally into it. He just started judo, but has more chops in the little plastic brick department....
Out of 4 boys? None are interested in the winter Olympics. All are interested in the summer Olympics. Sorry, one is interested in Hockey.
Since I am a stay-at-home-mom, we are supporting their sport choices. My oldest wants Hockey. We have to drive to Atlanta for that. It's not far, but it can take awhile to get there.
Mine watched a downhill skier crash and burn and slide down the mountain, then looked at me with huge eyes and said, "I want to go fast, LIKE THAT!" He's 2. I'm thinking I'm not going to encourage that one.
Curling . . . though for some reason they don't want to sweep the floor for training! Can you believe their lack of dedication? :P
Love the equestrian events! Hope your DD gets there!
My youngest son? Nothing in the winter has been encouraging him. He likes Tae Kwon Do, wrestling, and Archery.
My oldest? Curling. Archery. La Crosse.
What are we doing to encourage it? Getting them in classes that will better themselves and their abilities. do they want to be in the Olympics? No. Not really. But they are doing their best.
Me? I'd love to do Archery. Geena Davis got into the Olympics with Archery...and she wasn't "young"...maybe I can too!!
My daughter rides a unicycle and is perfecting her juggling. I'm not kidding. Her first circus performance is in May.
Mine never had any desire to compete in the Olympics, since they didn;t have a Theatre event.
My boys love basketball and my daughter is a competitive dancer...she got into the ice dancing of these past olympics.
Honestly, they don't say they want to be in the olympics, but the enjoy just being active kids. We support them through all different sports year round...and that's good for us.
My daughter loves figure skating.
My son, loved that "Skeleton" sport. And snowboarding.
And forget what its called, but that one where they ski cross country and then have to shoot a "rifle" at various targets... I loved that one and my son too. I would love, to do that myself!
No snow country here where I am. Except on top of Mauna Kea.
Oh well!
My daughters were both thrilled that ballet figured so prominently in the opening and closing ceremonies. They are both avid ballerinas (in a pre-professional school), and recognized many of the Bolshoi dancers who performed by name. (In fact, they also keep track of casting for many of the major American companies - NYCB, PNB, Ballet West, Miami City Ballet, and of course our local favorite, SF Ballet.)
If ballet became an Olympic event, they would be there in a heartbeat! As it is, we are at the ballet studio 6 days per week for several hours, and we are ponying up many thousands of dollars for Summer Intensive programs (like summer camp, but for dancers). They CRIED when Breaking Pointe was cancelled on the CW. We have First Position on DVD, and I'm surprised it's not worn out. Nutcracker audition day is like a national holiday in this house. We are a dance crazy household, for sure.
Is Disorganization an Olympic sport?
Because he'd definitely medal in that! Lol
Seriously though, we all enjoyed watching the Olympics this year.
Snowboard and no way in h*ll. He knows it too.
i'm with your DD. all i ever dreamed about was getting a pony into the olympics.
my younger is a snowboard freak. he longs to do the Xtreme stuff that gives me nightmares. fortunately college is keeping him far too busy for such shenanigans.

Not the Olympics....
BUT, we are HUGE soccer fans. HUGE.
Both of my boys play at the top level for their age groups and both of them want to play professional ball. They are still relatively youngs (8 and 11) but with the Sounders playing here in Seattle and the World Cup coming up this summer, all we talk about is soccer.
Which I am totally GREAT with!!!
I will do whatever it takes to help them with this goal. We play for a great club and my kid's coaches are very involved with getting their older kids into college and pro soccer. We have some connections here and in Mexico. I have no doubt that if THEY continue to want to play professional soccer that they will.

Kids are in tumbling and dance so the gymnasts really made an impact on them. Also the ice skating, it's very close to dancing.
My three sons all play hockey so naturally that's their dream but my 15 year old knows that ship has sailed...he and his friends are seriously looking to find a used bobsled just for the absurd fun of, well, owning a bobsled. Oh and the two of us are joining some of my friends and their teenagers for a night of curling. Apparently there's a local curling league. He jokes all the time about quitting hockey for curling...
She's 7 so swimming, diving, gymnastics and the luge. She thinks the luge looks fun.
My six year old wants to do luge or bobsleigh. Watching the Winter Olympics he threw away his dream of being a pizza delivering fireman, to chase the dazzling speeds of the ice. We live in a warm climate where it never snows.
My eight year old is going for swimming freestyle - probably the 1500 metres. He frightens himself with his own talent, and expressed concern after winning a race recently about if he improves, he doesn't want to get up on the Olympic podium because he's shy, and everyone in the world would see him.
My 8YO DD asked if one could figure skate and play hockey in the olympics. She knows that many players get pulled from the NHL, so she is planning on being in the NHL.
How far will I help her? We will approach it when the time comes. As for right now, she is about to move to her last ISI class in figure skating, which is recreational. If she chooses to continue, her lessons will only be private and she will have to switch from ISI to USFSA. Her coaches are Surya Bonaly and her mother Suzanne. In hockey, she is in a house league. She is a good skater, but needs better stick handling. She also plays goalie. She takes some pretty intense camps and will take her second pro ambitions goalie camp this summer. It is all up to her as she grows.
