My SIL needs to go to a good hospital or birthing center that has excellent staff and facilities. What are your recommendations and why?

What can I do next?

I delivered all 3 of mine at Morton Plant in Clearwater. All of my nieces were born there, and my cousins. I've never heard a bad comment about the place. It's all women, has very home-like rooms, all staff have always been very knowledgable of their job and very respectful of my wishes.

On the other hand, I have heard more bad than good about St Pete General and Bayfront. From the stories I've heard, I'd never deliver at either of those two if I could prevent it.

I had my 5 year old daughter at st pete general and I had a lovely experience with it being my first child. The nurses were very nice and I had not problems or concerns at all. I'm due to have my 2nd child (boy) at Bayfront Medical. No reason as to why I picked them it's just closer to home. Also closer to All childrens just in case there is a problem or something.

I delivered my son 4 months ago at St. Pete General. It was awesome! The facilities are older, but comfortable, and the staff was WONDERFUL! The nursery staff was very helpful to us since we were first time parents...they taught us how to diaper, feed, comfort, and take care of our little bundle! My husband had more to do since I had him C Section, so the staff was very patient in teaching him what to do to help me. My labor nurse was also excellent! She was very tactful with my family who showed up out of nowhere, when it came time to check dilation, and administer comfort meds! Needless to say, they all were very accomodating, and I would go back there in a heartbeat...should I need their services again that is!

I had my first at Bayfront and I did NOT have a good experience there. Part of it was that they were so full I ended up in a part of the maternity area that was rarely used. The nurses that did come in were not helpful at all and they kept treating me as though I was stupid (I'm not). I must say that I did have a delivery nurse with me during delivery (I delivered naturally, no epidural), that was really great.

In contrast, I had my second at Morton Plant and it was much better (in terms of recovery - the delivery was actually less good, mostly because the nurse was in a panic because my doctor wasn't there yet and I was ready to go, and when you're ready to go, you're not going to listen to someone telling you not to push!). The rooms were very homey feeling and the nurses were nice, but more important they were quite helpful. Of course I knew the drill by then so I wasn't as nervous.

That's my two cents - good luck to your SIL!

SAINT PETE GENERAL!!! This hospital has the most professional staff around and the best prenatal classes. I received the best care for the delivery of my baby and a subsequent surgery 2 months ago. Both stays were very comfortable and we were so "at home" there. They have a little kitchen on the OB floor which patients can use and a fridge to store your champagne or whatever for after the baby is born. They also have a neonatologist on staff 24/7 from All Childrens, just in case. The security there is very high tech and it's a much less hectic environment than Bayfront (a very stressful teaching hospital). I could tell you horror stories about Bayfront, but I wont. They also have very good food and you can tell the dietician what you want to eat for every meal. Post delivery, they have cutting edge care for your (how do I say this?) "area" that is in pain. Plus you're super close to Tyrone and lots of restaurants (DQ!!!).

Trust me, just have her go to St Pete Gen'l!

Breath of Life on East Bay just west of Starkey. I suggest taking a tour and seeing for yourself how clean and high tech yet home-y it is. They have all the clinical stuff (oxygen tanks, gause, etc) in a closet in each room so that it doesn't take away from the atmosphere... each suite has a whirlpool tub and a detached shower, the birthing rooms are very nice and have a little theme... it's didn't give me the impression that you were birthing in someone's spare bedroom, but it was still a lot less "hospitaly"...

EDIT: I've heard good things about St. Pete General and Morton Plant. I have a birth client delivering at MP next month so If your SIL isn't due before then I'll be happy to let you know what I see...

I had my daughter at Bayfront hospital and had a great experience there. All of the staff there were excellent especially the nurses. They were so caring, concerned and helpful during this time and very patient! My friend had her baby at St. Pete General and loved every bit of her experience there. I'd say either one are great.

Bayfront!

My OB only delivers there so luckily I didn't have to choose. I've heard St. Pete Gen is good b/c it's small. I'd go w/ Bayfront because All Children's is attached. My first baby asperated meconium (baby poop like black tar) and had dificulty breathing. The Bayflight medical team was there before he was all the way out and rushed him to All Children's. That's the best children's hospital in the area. I got to go over and be with him the whole time I was recovering. I saw other babies in that NICU from other hospitals and their moms couldn't be there b/c they had C-sections or natural birth and weren't discharged yet. So sad. My baby was perfectly fine, but they wanted to put him on antibiotics with an I.V. and watch him. He was over 8lbs and was healthy looking compared to the others in there. I was just sooooo glad that I could be wheeled down the hall to see my baby right after I got cleaned up. My husband went with him when they took him away so he was never without one of us.

So plan for the worst, but hope for the best. I liked my nurses with both deliveries there. I had good epidural experiences too. Bring your own toothbrush though b/c the ones there are so cheap:) That's my only complaint!

I had both of my children at St. Petersburg General Hospital on 38th ave and 66th street. I loved both of my experiences there. My first was and natural birth and the 2nd was a c-section, so I got to experience it all. The staff there is so wonderful, they are truly there to make you and your baby comfortable and happy. I couldn't have asked for better people to take care of us! Just about everyone I know in the area also had thier babies at this hospital and I have not heard one bad story yet.
