My 2 month old has a cow's milk allergy. I breastfeed, so i have to avoid dairy. she is much happier, but i would like to supplement sometimes with formula. what formula do you recommend? Also, she refuses a pacifier and bottle even if there is breastmilk in the bottle. i have tried all shapes and sizes bottle/pacifier nipples. it's 100% fine if she doesn't take a paci, but she will need to take a bottle sometimes. do you have advice on getting her to take a bottle also? thanks!

What can I do next?

Neither of my kids are allergic to milk, but it was almost impossible to breast feed for me, as I had major problems but when I started using formula I noticed that my daughter spit up a lot all over the place all the time especially on the Carnation formula. So I started using Enfamil Prosobe. It is a finer powder than the simulac and my daughter quit spitting up at once. So that is what I used. The prosobe is soy based, so if you want, you can try it. We really liked it, much better than the simulac.

C.,

My daughter had an allergy to my breastmilk so very reluctantly we had to put her on a special formula called Nutramagen(sp?). It smells awful but it worked wonders for her. It was heart breaking for me to wean her because I loved breastfeeding and she was such a good nurser. So my husband stepped up to the plate and worked with her an entire night to get her to take a bottle. She, like your baby, wouldn't take a bottle period! I finally had to go outside while he tried to work with her and get her to take the bottle. He wasn't forceful at all, he just stuck with it and eventually she started sucking from the bottle. Anyway, our situations differ some, but I thought I would share the brand of formula we used. Good luck!

They have lactose free formulas. I am not sure how you could tell a 2 mos old was allergic to dairy? Was it just the upset tummy after breast feeding?? Just curious.
IT IS GREAT she refuses a pacifier and don't encourage that!! It will be one hard habit to break later, neither of my kid liked them and after the first month I stopped trying to even give it to them. As far as the bottle mix formula with the breast milk half and half. Keep trying she is VERY young......

My son is allergic to milk as well and he is 18 months old and still on Similac Soy formula per the doctors order. I had him tested along with my 3.5 month old at the time. I would reccommend you getting your daughter tested at the allergist to make 100% sure she isn't allergic to soy as well. A lot of kids unfortunately are allergic to both. My nephew is an anaphlactic and cannot have soy or milk products. If she has a true Milk allergy you CANNOT give her lactose free milk. It is not the lactose in milk it is the whey protein they are allergic to. That's why people who are lactose intolerant can have most types of dairy. It is often times confused because 901% of people don't really know a true allergy or the symptoms.

I would avoid formula altogether and pump and offer her breastmilk instead. Your milk is the perfect food for her, and if she has allergies, I would not mess with introducing any kind of formula since that might make it worse.

Some babies just never take to a paci or bottle (my first was very much this way) so I would try to follow her cues. She may just be a more sensitive baby and need mom more. One book I found to be helpful was "Parenting the Fussy Baby and High Need Child" by Dr. William Sears. Blessings to you and your precious little one!

There are soy based formulas, for babies with sensitive tummies to milk, I always used Similacs soy brand or Wal-marts brand when I wasn't on WIC, it is a lot cheaper and as far as the ingredients I could see no difference.

I have no advice for the bottles though, other then to have someone else offer the bottles and keep trying and using different nipples.
