Does anyone know why someone would have dramatic weight loss after having a baby?
I had my DD in April. Before I got pregnant I weighed about 135, I am 5'2". So I could have standed to lose a little weight. Mostly I carried my weight in my belly. I only gained 15 lbs. while I was pregnant. Now, I weigh 115. 20lbs lighter than when I got pregnant. not that it is bothering me any. I am just tired of people telling me I am anorexic, or asking me if I feel Ok. I feel fine. I am not exercising, I just do not drink beer anymore or sodas. And of course I am not sitting around doing nothing, since I have a child to take care of. I personally think that is all it is. Just wanted to know if anything could be wrong or if I should tell everyone to leave me alone I am fine.

When I stopped drinking soda I lost 10 pounds in one week. Dropping the carbs form the beer to has made a huge impact. Congratulations. I really think the beer and soda is what did you in.

I had the same thing happen to me. I'm 5'6" and went from a pre-preg weight of 135 to post-preg weight of 117. I lost my weight from breast feeding and changing to a diary free diet b/c of my son's needs. I ate tons, but since so little fat, I lost a bunch. I got those comments you are getting quite often, even thought people saw me eating. If you feel good about yourself, just ignore them. By the way, I actually did have to gain back to 130 b/f I could carry a healthy second pregnancy. (125-130 has been my body's comfort weight for as long as I can remember). Good luck and go buy a pair of sexy jeans!

I lost A LOT of weight after I had my DS who is now 19 months old. I was about 20 lbs. overweight before getting pregnant, gained almost 30 lbs while pregnant and have lost over 50 lbs. since giving birth. Most of it I lost in the first 3 months because of breastfeeding.
If your Body Mass Index is normal for your height (sounds like it is) and you feel healthy, don't worry about it. Just remember to keep eating balanced healthy meals.

Sheesh! I wish that I had your problem. However, after my first baby, I gained a ton of weight, and then lost very rapidly for the first month or so. Mainly, I was sweating out the water weight, and then I had also kind of lost my appetite. After all, I was no longer eating for two. The nurse asked me at one appointment if I was trying to starve myself, LOL! I was simply eating when I was hungry and not forcing it when I was not. Don't worry about what other people say. They will say something if you're fat or skinny. Some don't know how to keep their comments to themselves. I had a doctor ask me if my little girl was always THAT skinny, and I turned around and asked him if he had always been THAT fat! Negative body image goes both ways, and is one of those things that should never happen. I am 5 months pregnant, and I dearly hope that I lose some weight rapidly after I have this baby.

Have a Great Day!

If you've checked your BMI, you know you're within normal range. If you're not continuing to lose and remaining steady, then you're fine. As a heavy person, it just mystfies me how rude people can be. A thin person doesn't want to hear how "skinny" they are any more than an overweight person wants to hear how they need to "go on a diet" --now, if you are very pale and have huge dark circles under your eyes, then it's time to be concerned. You didn't mention that, and you say you feel fine, so just chalk it up to normal nosiness and lack of good manners.

There are some medical conditions that are associated with weight loss. (diabetes, hyperthyroidism/overactive thyroid) Are you still losing weight (w/o trying)?? If so, I'd say that is a symptom of something. But if you're maintaining at the same number, and you feel fine....just wait until your next dr. visit to ask your doctor if you should be concerned.
It is rare that a Mom would weigh less than her pre-pregnancy weight - w/o trying!! I'm jealous! You must be blessed with great genetics!

Everyone I know who breastfeeds to at leaste 12 months (including myself) has lost a lot of weight! I know about 20 women who this has happened to. It is one of those secret benefits of bfing. My best friend gained 60 lbs when she got prego and was over weight before. She nursed until her daughter was 2 and lost all preg weight plus some (She is 5'2) She now looks better than she has her whole life and is so healthy. She looks like a freaking supermodel! I am also enjoying eating more than my 6' tall husband and continuing to loose weight. I try to eat healthy but I eat a ton of calories. I am 4'11 and have lost almost 40 lbs. If you aren't breastfeeding I would worry, but if you are enjoy it while it last! Everyone else has to do all kinds of diet plans and I eat whatever I want and continue to loose weight. Life is good.

if you have talked to your Dr and he said you are fine then I wouldn't worry about it. I lost alot of wieght after givin birth to both of my children. If they are telling you that you are anorexic, then honestly I would tell them "Thank you for your concern. I was also concerned about loosing so much weight and I talked to my Dr. He said I am fine and that I shouldn't worry about it unless I loose too much more weight." You can also tell them if they want to know your secret for losing weight, it is to stop drinking soda and alcohol and to chase around after a child. This will tell them that you do care about what they say without alienating them and should shut them up at the same time. If they continue to be rude about it, then you may need to be a little more harsh and tell them that you would appreciate it is they would not worry about you so much and worry about themselves. If they are talking about you behind your back, then confront them and tell them that you do not feel it is appropriate behavior and if they have concerns or something to say about you, they should have enough respect for you to say it to your face.

The only reason I would know of is because your thyroid would be high. I had this issue after my middle child. Have it checked . It might be hyperthyroidism. It could be nothing, but get it checked just to make sure. Good luck and have a Great and Blessed Happy Thanksgiving!!

do you feel well? trust what your body is telling you, if you feel good, then you're probably alright. if you don't feel well overall, then perhaps you should get checked out.
you're right- moms work hard! maybe you're eating healthier and just didn't realize it.
i checked your BMI--there are places online to figure it--yours is 21, which is very healthy.

Two of my friends had same problems as yours. One of them had PPD (after birth depression)and on medicine for one year. If you feel fine and not depressed, then maybe it's your thyroid is high which is happened to my other friend. She was on birth control or other medicine for several months to control her hormoes.

Good luck!!

Hi M.,

Afer birth new moms tend to shed about 12.5 to 14 pounds. Are you breastfeeding? Researchers say that breastfeeding may cause moms to lose weight. At least during the 12 months after giving birth. According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, the process of breastfeeding releases a number of hormones into your body which helps your uterus to return to its pre-pregnancy size and shape.

That happened to me too because I was breastfeeding and I'm sure also because of the stress of being a first time Mommy. I am also 5'2" and before I got pregnant I weighed 130 and at after having my daughter I got down to 109 at one point! After I stopped breastfeeding the weight slowly started to come back and I am now back to my "normal" weight.

The breastfeeding definately helps out with weight loss and as you said, you're not just sitting around any more. I've dropped 55 lbs since I had my DD in July. And I'm not doing anything different than I did before I got pregnant, but between new baby, c-section and no appetite for awhile and breastfeeding the weight has just fallen off. If you truly are worried though talk to your doctor just to be safe. Have a Happy Thanksgiving!!!

Are you nursing? I started out pre pregnancy at 123, gained 35 lbs, and then ended up at 105 at my lowest. Of course I gained it all back and ended back at 125 after I stopped nursing. I nursed for a year and was eatting as much as 10 people would, but I still lost weigh while nursing.

As others have said sometimes your body just changes, and also if you only gained 15 lbs while pregnant you basically lost some weight as well. The only thing I would have checked if you are concerned about it is your thyroid. Pregnancy can mess it up and cause it to go hyper... but i'd just tell everyone to leave you alone!

Good Job! You should feel great! Don't worry about what people say. At 5'2 115 is a perfect weight, definitely not too skinny. Seems like you have stabilized. IF you drop like 10 more lbs. then you should get checked. Tell everyone that you feel better than ever and motherhood has blessed you to weigh what you should have to begin with. Smile and feel proud that you look good! :-)

I have a friend who was just a bit overweight before babies, but then after pregnancy, her body changed. She is a rail now. And she has 5 kids! Her body chemistry, hormones, metabolism, etc. just seems to have changed after going through pregnancy. That is what her doctor told her. So just consider yourself ridiculously lucky!!!

As long as you feel well I wouldn't worry about it. With my first child I did the same thing. I looked great! So good that 10 months later I was pregnant again! Keep taking your vitamins and eating well, and consider it a blessing. Pay attention to your body. If you start feeling out of sorts see your Dr.

That's not such a huge amount of weight to lose and that weight is perfectly fine for your height. However, if you do lose anymore weight, then you definitely should get it checked out. As it could definitely be a sign of hyperthyroidism, which can be triggered by pregnancy/childbirth. If it's auto-immune based (Hashimoto's), you may find at some point that your thyroid switches the other way and you gain weight easily. However, if you're not having problems sleeping your heart rate is normal, and periods regular, then it's likely not a problem, just something to mention at your next physical. If anyone mentions the weight loss again, just tell them what you've told us - cutting out beer and soda and staying active caring for your daughter seems to be the key to maintaining a healthy weight for you. That should shut up most people right quick.

Tell them to leave you alone, you're fine :)

It's natural for breastfeeding to aid weight loss...burns up calories like crazy. Every time I nurse my 3 1/2 month old I think 'losing weight, yippee!'
Add to that you abstaining from sodas and beer (alcohol), of course you're losing weight. Excellent and bravo! I read before that alcohol was a triple whammy... 1)increases apetite 2)loaded with calories and 3)lowers metabolism.

What would 5'2" be in cm and 115 be in kilos? :)

I'm having a similar experience to a PP. I weighed 120 pre-pregnancy, gained 35 pounds and have bottomed out at 107. I am exclusively breastfeeding but I've lost all the fat areas I used to have (side of thighs, around hips, etc). I hope to gain some of it back after I wean but I guess we'll see. I know how you feel about people asking about your weight as I am 5'6" and look a little too skinny but I think that it is normal for our bodies. As long as you're eating well and enough (I eat way more than my husband who's 6'1" and 180lbs.) than I think you'll be fine. And think of it this way, when you do start to gain it back you can be very careful with your diet so you put on what you want. Happy Thanksgiving :)

The same thing happened to me after having both my kids and I really think it was just the nursing. As long as you don't drop down to 90 or something your probably fine. My sister started out almost the exact same size as you, and now weighs 110 after nursing her son so I think it can happen with any body type. My whole family was asking if I was getting too tired with the baby, or under too much stress, but I didn't think I looked bad - just lost the weight rather quickly. Personally I think people who had a difficult time loosing their pregnancy weight can't understand that it isn't the same for everyone. Just be happy your one of the lucky ones! K.

Hi M.,
You could call your OB or family MD and see what they suggest. The doctor will likely check your thyroid for hyperthyroidism, and that can cause weight loss. See what the MD or nurse thinks, but likely that is all they will check. He/she will probably ask you some other questions about sleep patterns and so forth. Good luck!

You're probably fine like you said but you may want to get your thyroid tested if you're worried. As you mentioned, it's probably because you're working around the clock with your baby and you're not consuming the empty calories in soda or alcohol.

Hi there. Are you breast feeding? If so, I was told by breast feeding your baby that tends to help take off your excess weight. Perhaps if you are truly worried about it, maybe you should get a check up at your doctor. Or you could always drink a milkshake before going to bed; that will for sure put on some lbs. lol :)

Good Luck,

Hi M.,

I have had that same issue, I am 5 feet 4 inches.. before I had my daughter I weighed 125, six months after she was born I weighed 110. Everyone kept harrassing me because of my weight loss. I did nothing different, I didn't even breast feed,I am contributing my weight loss to stress and the higher level of activity that is associated with having a child.Hope this helps.

Same thing happened to me - I was about 135 when I got pregnant (I'm 5'5"), now I'm about 120. I do exercise, and chase after my 17 mo. It doesn't bother me at all that I weigh less - I totally prefer it! Just say your exercise routine is your daughter and leave it at that. People can be so rude and nosy about other people's weight.
