According to the little pregnancy calendar i find on other websites I am currently 6 weeks along. Over the last week I have noticed that my stomach is bulging out(it looks like i am at least four months in certain shirts) I havent really been eating any junk food or sweets. Actually I have been eating alot healthier... In books I have read it says that I shouldnt be showing yet. I can't suck it in... its not like the normal tummy fat. I haven't been too a doctor yet because they make you wait eight weeks. Should I be concerned?

What can I do next?

I don't think you should be concerned... every pregnancy is different. Wait until you go to the doc and see what's up.

Hi L.-
It's not unusual at all for your stomach to start bulging a little. Everyone is different and starts 'showing' at different times. It can be caused by a lot of different things... bloating due to gas and constipation (your system slows down a lot when you're pregnant) is very possibly the reason for it.

As far as weight gain is concerned, IGNORE it when people, including doctors, tell you that you have to gain between 25 and 35 pounds. It's a bunch of hocus pocus! 25-35 pounds is AVERAGE, not NORMAL. A normal healthy pregnant woman can gain a lot less or a lot more and it's still normal. For instance, if you weigh less than 'average', you will quite possibly gain more and vice versa. As long as you eat healthy (get lots of protein!!) every day and exercise regularly, your body will gain whatever it needs to be healthy for you in your baby. That could be 15 pounds, it could be 65. In my case I was thinner than 'average' and I gained a healthy beautiful 45 pounds. My Midwife told me that was the perfect amount for me. Eat well, get lots of protein and gentle exercise, and enjoy the pregnancy- good luck!

Every pregnancy is different, and the books generalize. I would contact a doctor though, I was able to get in for an appointment when I was 7 weeks. If you are eating healthy, I would think everything will be ok. Some women show a lot sooner than others. I hope this helps.

a couple of questions first...
is this your first pregnancy? i know with my 2nd baby i started showing a lot sooner, i was told by other experienced moms it's b/c your skin and everything is already stretched out from the 1st one...especially since i got pregnant just 15 mo. after my 1st one was born!
2nd question, how sure are you that you are only 6 wks along? it is possible to have "periods" for the first few months of pregnancy. i can't recall the medical explanation but i know that light bleeding, similar to a light period, is perfectly normal. so you might just be further along than you think!
other than that, i really wouldn't worry about it! if you are eating healthy and will be seeing a dr. in 2 wks anyway, there's no need to stress yourself out about it! just relax and enjoy the fact that there's a baby growing inside you!

Everyone is different and will gain weight at a different time..I didnt gain any weight at all until my 6 month and between 6 months and 38 weeks I had gained 80 lbs. I did have a 9lb baby though.
My sister who went in to have her baby this morning starting gaining from month 1 and gained just around 50lbs through out today.
So, if I was you I wouldnt be to concerned about it, but just to be safe you might try and get in to see a doc. ASAP.

I'm sure you'll hear this from others too, but everyone responds differently to pregnancy. Some people don't show until their 4 months along - others can see it right away! Don't worry. Call your Dr if you have any concerns, they don't mind when you call - taking care of you is what they do! It helped me to make a list of the questions that I had, then I'd either ask them all at my next Dr. visit, or I'd call and ask them all at once. It can be scary when you don't know what's happening in there - but don't worry - your body knows just what to do!

Hi L.!

I am a mother of 3. I gained weight at all different times w/ all 3 of my pregnancies. Is this your first baby? If it is, and you are tiny, the weight will show fast! Im speaking of my own experience. I would not worry at all, especially if you are eating healthier, and are active. The best advice I can give is: stay far far away from junk food, DO NOT SCRATCH your tummy when you start getting bigger, it will increase stretch marks! And stay active. Even if you just go for a brisk 30 minute walk 3 times a week. If you really want to do well, take up a light yoga class. Best of luck to you!

No way you shouldnt be worried. Who knows it could just be a big baby, or you could be further along then you think or alot of things. I am having my fourth child now and i started showing way earlier then i usually do lol. But every pregnancy is different. I know i look further along then 24 weeks lol bnut my children tend to come out about 9 lbs or more. I eat healthy myself and gained alot of weight due to hormones you never really know when your body is going through so much. Good luck and congrats

My mother was thin when she was having her children, and showed very early on. She said after only 3 or 4 months along, people thought she was due any day. It was that way for all three of her children. Maybe that's just how you carry your pregnancies. I would't worry. I worried about everything during my pregnancy. It will get a lot easier when you're far enough along to feel your baby moving. When I'd get worried, I'd just lay down and feel her move, then I knew everything was fine.
Good luck

L., I am not a doctor but as long as your not bleeding and not in pain you should be okay till you see your doctor in 2 weeks. If you have any questions don't hesitate to call your doctor and talk to the nurse, thats what they are there for, is to answer your questions. This is your first pregnancy? You will have a ton of questions. A good book to get is "What to expect when you are expecting" Or a week by week pregnancy book. I have both and they were great for both my pregnancies. I would call you docotr and ask questions thats what they are there for!!! Good luck with your pregnancy and congrats!!! A.

I am a 22 year old mother of a 3 month old son. And I was in great shape at the beginning and throughout the pregnancy. Everyone told me I wouldn't start showing "noticably" until my second trimester. But I did start getting a little poochy towards the end of the 1rst trimester. And yes I didn't eat that much and what I did eat was healthy. So, basically what you are going through is normal. No preganancy is the same. Everyone is different. But not too different to compare. Wieght gain is essentail and very important to watch as you continue your pregnancy. Normal weight gain is about 15-25 lbs. You will gain weight no matter what. You will notice your pooch but other people wont. It's important throughout your preganancy to eat "smart" and have a work out routine. At least walk for 20 minutes a day and that will help significantly. I read a book during my preganancy that answered any question you could think of. I strongly recommend it to 1rst time moms. " What to Expect when Expecting" Good Luck and Congratulations!!!

Do you drink a lot of water? You should. My doctor told me to drink at least a gallon of water a day! (FYI - I NEVER made it to a gallon - that's a lot of water!) You do need to drink a lot of water, because your amniotic fluid is completely replaced like every 3 hours. So your body has to have fluid and if you're not providing it, your body will find ways to get it!

My sister weighed like 95 pounds when she found out she was preggers the first time. She retained water SO much that she doubled her body weight. She didn't even look like the same girl. Point?? Drink water.

I am surprised that your doc is making you wait, tho. Everytime I found myself pregnanat, I had an appointment within like a few days to maybe a week. Hmmm.

Anyway - drink the water and see what Doc has to say.

It sounds like you're retaining more water, which isn't a big deal, but if it'd make you feel better you should contact your doctor to make sure. Enjoy your pregnancy!

HI! I know it's frustrating. So much happens in the first trimester, and yet many doctors won't see you until it is nearly over! I wouldn't worry about the weight gain, though. That may just be how you will carry your weight. I started showing really early too, and even gained 30 lbs by the time I was four months! However, from four months til the end of my pregnancy, I only gained 5 nore pounds. The weight gain stinks, and is uncomfortable, and some people can say the rudest things about your size. And in the end it is all worth it, because that little one will be so precious! Good luck!

Hi L.,
The first time I was pregnant, my FIRST sign of pregnancy was that I could not zip a skirt when I was getting ready for work one day! I hadn't missed a period and I was not trying to get pregnant. Everyone's body is different and all our bodies respond differently to being pregnant. With both of my pregnancies, I gained right away, I also came home from the hospital both times weighing the exact (ok within a couple of pounds) weight as I did on my very first prenatal visit.
Just curious... why is your doctor making you wait for your first prenatal visit? Have they even done a test at the office and talked with you about prenatal care, etc.?

Hi L.,
I am 22 and had my baby boy 7 weeks ago. I didn't start showing until I was about 3 months pregnant. It's possible that you could be having twins or your body just reacts differently to pregnancy than other women out there. This was my first pregnancy and I learned that using the books, information and advice (which is given to you during your first pregnancy) as a guidline is not always what you should do. Use them more as a reference because the books only tell you what the majority of people go through or what the experts think. Everyone is different and there for can not be catagorized by a book. One book I really thought helpful was: What to Expect When Your Expecting. You can get it at any wal-mart or bookstore for about $8-&13. Another good book for new moms is: What to Expect in the First Year. This is also available at wal-mart. Good luck with your pregnancy!

I wouldn't be to concerned yet. If you are pregnant you are probably just bloated. With my first pregnancy I was the same way. I took monthly pregnancy pictures all long the way and I looked bigger at 10 weeks than I did at 16 weeks and I didn't even gain weight until I was about 24 weeks. It's just something weird your body does, but I wouldn't worry until you talk to your doctor.

Hi L.,

First off, congratulations!! Pregnancy is a wonderful time and yes, your body does go through many changes. Every woman is different. However, the first thing is that your blood volume increases thus expanding all of your blood vessels.

Regarding seeing a doctor, things have changed. It is okay to see a doctor as soon as you find out that you are pregnant. The doctors will usually do an initial ultrasound at 6 weeks to date the pregnancy. Then you go monthly until your 8th month, then every two weeks then weekly until you deliver.

It is good to get early prenatal care so that you can get as much information as you can. It is important to start early and eat a balanced diet with a variety of foods. Also, it gives you a jump start to learn all about breastfeeding - the best and optimal food you can give to your baby.

As far as your "tummy" - there is no need to be concerned. Eat a healthy diet with lots of fruits & vegetables, eat to your appetite and be active.

Hope this helps.

First of all, it depends more on the size of you, your husband, and the baby than calendars. My cousin weighed about 100lbs when she got pregnant, and her husband was tall and big (not fat, just huge!) and, by the time that she was 4 months along, everyone thought she was pregnant with twins. I was bigger, and I actually lost weight during pregnancy, but my son bounced around so much that sometimes my stomach stretched out of my clothes even in 3x's. It could be waterweight, or twins, or just a big baby. Just go to the checkup, but don't worry.

L. I I don't think you should worry. First off everybody is different so who's to say you are looking 4 months pregnant. Secondly it sounds like you are just guessing how far along you are. I went to the doctor the second I thought I was pregnant and they helped me figure out how far along I was, with the help of an ultrasound. I think I was like 6 weeks along and they were able to get a heart beat. My answer is do not be concerned until you have consulted your doctor, I am not a doctor but you sound completely fine to me. Don't stress to much ok, and congratulaitons on having a baby. :0)
