Very Early Miscarriage–do I Still Need to Wait to Try Again?

I recently had a very early miscarriage (started at less than 5 weeks). Because it started only a few days after getting a positive pregnancy test, my husband and I are not suffering emotionally. Obviously we're disappointed, but we'd hardly even had a chance to get used to the idea, if that makes sense. I also got pregnant on the first try, which I wasn't expecting, so everything just sort of happened very quickly. We would love to try again next month though. I essentially got a normal period, but about a week later than normal (did not need surgery or anything). Are there any medical reasons for waiting? Has anyone had any experience (positive or negative) with this?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you all so much for your advice and support. I'm going to see my Dr. this week, but am leaning towards trying again soon and seeing what happens (unless she tells me otherwise). It would definitely be harder if I had a second miscarriage so if my Dr. has any misgivings we might wait a couple of months. Thanks again for your help and sharing your stories!

So it was a chemical pregnancy? (when embryo doesn't implant) I had two of those before getting pregnant with my oldest and there was no problem trying the following month.

I have had MC's at before 6 weeks each time. My doctor only asked me to wait once and that was because my Iodine was to low. If I start bleeding as you have stated she says to mark it as cycle day one and if we are ready we can try again. M.

I'd wait month or two if only for the reason of having a better idea of the conception date. It will help avoid any discussion later about your due date...or discrepancies with the age on the ultrasound.

From what I was told, at less than 5 weeks, there isn't any medical reason to wait.

I've had several miscarriage and passed them all naturally at different stages. I chose to wait in between, but mostly due to wanting to track the conception more closely.

I miscarried around 5 weeks. My dr said not to worry about birth control because my body wouldn't allow me to get pregnant if it wasn't ready. I did wait one cycle however. But got pregnant right afterwards. I'm now due in a month. I think it's different for everyone. Just listen to your drs and follow your heart. Also I forgot to mention that I had to have a D&C and my doc still told me not to worry about birth control.

My sister had 2 miscarriages (she has 2 kids now) but the only reason they told her to wait three months is because she had to have a D&C. Since you didnt have one, I dont think you have to wait. But its always ok to call your doc to double check.

please wait at least a month or two! Let your body "normalize" before attempting again.....wouldn't you want a "best case scenario" to aid in carrying full-term? Multiple miscarriages is not something I would want to ever have to go through......one's more than enough!

I had 2 early miscarraiges (around 5wks & 6wks or so) and my doctor never said anything about waiting to try again. All they did was monitor my blood levels to make sure they went down. Good luck!

Talk to your doc.. mine told me to wait for 2 periods before trying again. I had a natural miscarriage at about 7 weeks.

There are many different answers to this, I recently read an article that said not to that there were better chances of getting pregnant and maintaining it if you tried a few months after the loss. Personally I have always thought that way myself. I thought and this is just me that if you did try within the first few months the statistics were in your favor. Mainly because you were still kind've had a higher level of hormones and it would make it easier to get pregnant and maintain it if you did. But those are just my thoughts. Doctors are changing their thougts on that-it used to be they wanted you to wait but now studies are showing that you shouldn't. Here is an article on that:

It was from Time August 6, 2010 in case the link doesn't work.

Good luck.

I'd ask your doctor about waiting, but I know mine didn't tell me that I needed to wait. I would caution you a little though about trying again right away. I know two women that got pregnant right away after a miscarriage (one at 6 weeks and one at 11 weeks). Both of them got pregnant with twins!

We got pregnant 2 weeks after our miscarriage in May. Unfortunately, we lost that one too, but after some bloodwork, we found the reason for them and were told to wait 6 months. Most women don't have my problem though, so I'd say go for it! You should be very fertile right now.

My doctor always said to wait at least one cycle before trying again to "give my body some rest". If you are feeling alright - physically and emotionally - then wait as long as you feel comfortable. After our first m/c, I grieved heavily and we waited about 6mos. before we tried again. After subsequent m/c's, we didn't wait at all since I never had to have a d&c.

Good luck to you!

i am sorry about your miscarriage. I also had an early m/c at about 5-6 weeks. same as you, no surgery or anything. my ob/gyn said that they suggest waiting one period, but that the only reason for that was not medical but so that they know when your period started so they can give you an accurate due date. i asked her specifically if that was the only reason and she said yes. i had already started trying again immediately and told her we weren't using birth control and she said that's fine. i did end up getting one more period before I did get pregnant again, but not for lack of trying! good luck!

Well, most women have had this happen and it is called a chemical pregnancy. Most don't know it because they are only a few days to a week or so late and just assume it was a longer cycle. If you are not actively trying or don't take a pregnancy test you would never know. There is no reason to wait. Most times it is due to a chromosomal thing and happens a lot. You can count the first day of bleeding as day one of your next cycle and just keep trying. If your body is ready, you could get pregnant right away or you might not, but I wouldn't wait if you are actively trying. There is no reason to wait and I am sure if you ask your Dr. they will say the same. You could always give them a call to put your mind at ease, but I would say just keep on trying.

You don't have to wait if you are ready. The same thing happened to me the first time I got pregnant. I miscarried at about 6 weeks and then got pregnant again right away (2 weeks later). I carried a healthy baby full term, no complications. My doctor said it is very common and that pregnancy tests now are so sensitive that you previously wouldn't even have known you were having a miscarriage - you would have just thought it was a late period. Anyway, it night help you to talk to your dr just to confirm and so they have record of it.

Yes, you should wait at least three normal cycles. The reason you should wait is because you could miscarry again. Essentially, the embryo could implant in the area from where you miscarried-its like a bad spot in the uterus so, you could miscarry again. Let your body heal. I am sorry for your loss. I had a miscarriage at ten weeks, got pregnant five months later and now have a beautiful three year old boy. Good luck, again I am sorry. I have been through this myself.
