I have just changed my 1year old over to regular milk. She is not taking to well to it. She started getting diarrea when i would give her the 2% milk so i changed to 1% and the same thing happened. I have now tried the fat free milk and keep having the same problem. She eats fine and only gets the runs when she drinks the milk. Has anyone had the same problem or any advice as to what to try.

What can I do next?

WHOLE milk is important up until at least 2 years old...the reason is they need the milk "fat" in it for brain development. They should not be "dieting" at this age. It is for nutrition.

This is what I did with my son: mix her regular formula as usual....fill the bottle about half way. Then add milk to it. Gradually, add more and more milk, thereby lessening the formula proportions. This is what I did with my son, as he did not like the "taste" of milk. Now, he is fine with milk.

She could be having the diarrhea because now, the milk is "richer" than she is used to.

Good luck,

Please try a soy or rice milk. My daughter was so allergic to milk when she was born that when I drank it and nursed her she would break out in a rash. She has since out grown the allergy, but the doctor has been advising all patients to stop using milk products all together. Dairy can affect asthma and allergies. Please talk to your doctor.

If she's drinking regular formula (similac advance or enfamil lipil) and having no diarrhea with that, then she's probably not allergic to cow's milk because both of those formulas are cow's milk based. My son had some diarrhea when we switched him over to whole milk, and his ped recommended that we just keep him on his formula for a month or two more until his stomach matures a little more. Sometimes they just have a problem digesting the larger milk proteins. But you shouldn't be giving your 1 year old reduced fat or low fat milk, only whole milk. She needs the fat from the whole milk. Good luck with everything!!

It needs to be Whole Milk at first-that might be the problem? Did you speak with the ped?

Dont assume she is allergic!!! It is a shock to her system b/c it is something new. It needs to be whole milk and with all my kids I transitioned over a month. I started with 6oz formula, 2 oz milk did that for one week, then went to 4oz of each, then 2 of formula, and 6 of milk. It makes the taste easier to adjust too, and not as harsh on their system. Stock up on butt cream b/c there will be diarrea and a rash. Good luck.

My pediatrician told me it HAS TO BE whole milk first then you can gradually change after two years old. If she has problems with those, THEN you can try the rice milk or the soy milk. I would ask your pediatrician.

My daughter went right to Rice Milk. It's the same nutritionally and easier on the digestive system. Try it.

She is probably allergic. Try Silk Soy Milk... they make a Very Vanilla for kids and it's actually better for her than cow milk.
