My 6 year old just lost her first tooth and I was wondering what the tooth fairy was bringing to other houses for a first tooth.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks to everyone for all the great ideas! We ended up giving her a dollar in a tooth fairy bear. She was very excited!

My son lost his first tooth yesterday and he got $5. Now my daughter pointed out this morning that she only got $1. (she's lost 6 teeth) I reminded her that the toothfairy gave her more when it was her first tooth. So, from now on, it's a buck. :)

I grade the teeth. First 8 up front get $1, Eye teeth are $2, and molars are $3. If there is a cavity or a filling in the tooth, the amount is cut in half. If the tooth is knocked out (traumatic accident to a tooth that was not loose) or pulled by the dentist (not loose), the amount is doubled.

I also like to leave encouraging notes from the tooth fairy (written with my opposite hand to disguise my handwriting) that say things like: "Keep brushing; you're doing a good job!" or "Needs a little work; let's keep those pearlies white."

I hope this helps. :o)

P.S. Find out from your little ones if their tooth fairy is a girl or a boy. When I was growing up, I simply "understood" that the tooth fairy was a girl because that is what I was taught. But, according to my older son from when he lost his first teeth at age 3 (traumatic accident that knocked 2 of them out: that blow cost me $4), his tooth fairy is a boy.

I felt I was setting the expectation for all the teeth yet to fall out, so the tooth fairy paid the same for all teeth. The "biggest teeth" brought slightly more. What my girls loved more than the money was the fairy dust left behind. I bought very fine grained colored sugar, the kind to sprinkle on cakes, and sprinkled it around. Have fun!

You can basically give her anything you like. With my daughter the tooth fairy got her a wrist watch and a gold necklace.

I give my little girl a dollar for each tooth lost. If she has to have it pulled out by someone else, or she does it herself it is still a dollar. BUT we had one of her upper teeth knocked out playing basketball...OUCH!! The tooth fairly left 5 that night with a note saying how sorry she was that she got hurt, but that she was proud of how brave she was. I thought I might add... our tooth fairy leaves the tooth behind. I remember when I was a child finding the teeth, therefore ruining it for me (mom said I was VERY upset). I think the less you have to hide the better chance that things will last a bit longer....

How cute are they when they loose that first tooth huh???? It only gets better. Mine has lost 5 and it is too cute!

Trust me don't leave $ 5 and $ 10 like my husband does. Insane I know. Because then you have to keep it up. We have 3 sons. He didn't ever think about it, until one kid lost like 4 teeth in a week, and he was a little put out. And I reminded him that he started it. I only leave $1-2 when my youngest started loosing his. My friend would leave $1 (the gold Saqajawea dollar coin)and a new tooth brush. I think that works great. Thank goodness, my older son doesn't have visits from that crazy fairy anymore. Second son will figure it out this year I think, he is highly suspicious, but 8 year old is still getting visits.
Good luck,
L.

She left my son $3 with his first tooth. Sadly, we had to actually borrow that out of my son's wallet. The day he lost his tooth, all I had was a $20 and my husband $10s and $5s. We didn't want to set that precedent, so we took it out of his wallet. We did pay him back before he noticed though!

For my son's first tooth the tooth fairy left a scroll under his pillow that had a poem written especially for him and throughout the poem were hints for him to follow to find his treasures. He found various things like a new toothbrush, kid friendly mouthwash and toothpaste, fun flossers and the last hint lead him to the garage where he found a new bike.

We usually give a dollar for each tooth. If they have to have the tooth pulled or it was a more difficult loss, we will give them more.

You might want to look at a book you can purchase from Publishamerica.net
It is about a little girl and her first lost tooth called "Faith's Star"

I really like the toothbrush idea with the money! Espeically if you do a 'Tinkerbell' or 'Spiderman' or whatever is appropriate for the child. My kids always liked getting a mixture of coins...quarters dimes and dollars (only)when they were smaller. It was like a treasure.
