Hi Everyone,
I was wondering if anyone has any advice on this issue. My son is almost 2 and will only drink milk from a bottle. He will drink water all day long from his sippy cup. I recently stopped giving him his 1 bottle a day of milk. I've been putting the milk in a sippy cup for about a week now and he refuses to drink it. I'm worried he is not getting enough calcium. Any advice would be very helpful.

What can I do next?

Hi Everyone

I have been going through the same thing with my 16 month old boy. He started drinking juice and water from the sippy cup before his 1st birthday and after we went on an airplane ride to Ireland when he needed to suck something I had to give him a bottle again and so have not been able to stop him from using the bottle for everything. I do agree with the other mothers that suggest the nuby cups as they are the best transition.

he will get over it once he realizes he isnt getting his way and if you are worried about getting the stuff he needs use suppliments. if in a few weeks or by the next docor visist he still wont take the cup ask the doctor. i have seen that before with a friends kid but that was a while back. seriously it isnt going to hurt him to not drink milk for a few weeks if that is what it takes. or try putting a little bit of flavor every now and then. not every time cause then he will expect it and get addicted.

Have you tried Nuby bottles? They look like a cross between bottles and sippy cups. My son drank his water out of a staw cup, but he wouldn't drink milk out of it or out of a sippy cup. I finally found the Nuby bottles (at CVS) and it was a great transition. We started giving him milk in this bottle alone for a wk or 2 and then traded off with sippy cups. Now he only drinks his milk out of regular sipppy cups. I hope this helps. T.

TOugh times, I understand. I went through this with my second child(she's now 4) around the same age. One night after about a month of what you're experiencing, I chucked the milk bottle. She had been done all other bottles by 13 months. I found it was helpful for my peace of mind to make sure I offered her chesses(which she ate whole heartedly), some flavored milk occasionally, cereal, my daughter now eats most kinds, and yes, some ice cream. Also I believe spinach is a good source of calcium, but good luck on that one. Also offering her the cup of milk(just a couple ounces at a time so you don't wwaste so much) with other dairy products, like the chees with crackers was helpful for her. Your son will come around too, you just have to wait him out. Good Luck!!

My 2 year old never drank plain milk from anything! So to get the calcium in him, I give him cereal with milk in the morning, afternoon snack of cheese, and yogurt after his nap. I also get him to help me make a chocolate milk before his bed: he puts a small drop of the syrup in and then pours lots of milk, so it doesnt even look chocolate, really. Then he helps me push buttons on the microwave to warm it up. When he participates in the milk making-he will drink almost the whole cup!!!

My daughter has sippy cups and straw cups and she thinks she is a big girl. we threw the bottles out and went cold turkey. I give her three cups of milk a day on top of the yougurt. I only give her 4 oz of juice. Every thing else is water. I did not have a problem getting rid of the bottle. Try rewards. the cups with the characters work well. I take my daughter shopping to pick them out. www.livegreeneasy.com

Good Morning M.,

Continue putting the milk in your son's sippy cup but you may want to add some dairy products like yogurt, cheese cubes to help him get more calcium in his diet.

I would keep giving him the sippy for milk only. Maybe have him pick out special sippy cups? I would also just try to make sure you give him other calcium rich foods to make sure he's getting enough. My son loves vanilla yogurt and if you add food coloring you can make it look pretty fun. Good luck!

I have a 17 month old boy and I stopped cold turkey. One day the bottle was there and the next it wasn't. He will eventually drink milk from the sippy cup. It might be other dynamics that have changed as well. Do you hold him when you give him the bottle? Maybe he just needs some comforting and cuddling and reassurance.

I had the same problem with my daughter this is what I did. I went out to the store and bought a sippy cup different from her other ones it had elmo on it and told her that elmo drinks his milk from this cup. It worked and that was the end of the milk bottle problem. I hope this helps you out. if it does work make sure you buy a couple incase they stop making that cup.
