My son is 8 months old. After weeks of no teeth we now have 2 pushing through at the same time and another that I feel under the gums. He has been great through this whole thing except for this week he has stopped taking bottles. This is a boy that had to suck 6 ounce bottles dry a month ago but now is only taking 3 ounces max! He does not seem hungry otherwise and is taking his spoon feedings well. Any one with any advice on easing his comfort would be greatly appreciated! Oh, he HATES oragel!!!

Give him Motrin...I waited as long as I could to give this to my daughter, but it was a saving grace once we tried it. She was able to rest and it reduces swelling to allow the teeth to push through. Hope he feels better soon.

have you tried motrin? I think that helps much better than tylenol or oragel. He is old enough now that he can have some motrin....i would call his pediatritian for dosing. Also, is he congested or have a runny nose? How is he sleeping...I'm asking because he might have an ear infection that can be caused by increased saliva, running nose, etc. That may be the reason he won't eat also! Just some thoughts!! My son never would take a teething ring but some of my friends have sworn by them! Good luck!

We also used Hylands, and you can find them either at Wal-Mart or Albertson's.

They dissolves so quickly, that I normally placed them under my babies tongue.

They are definitely a lifesaver!

go to a health food store (sprouts, central market, whole foods) or check out a CVS or Walgreens and get the Teething Tablets. That's what they're called and they're in a pink and blue labeled bottle. The oragel stuff isn't long lasting and makes their whole little mouth go numb and it's uncomfortable. The tablets are homeopathic, and my daughter is soothed instantly by them. When she wakes in the middle of the night we just pop two in, wait five minutes and she passes right back out. They don't work for all kids. They never seemed to work for my son, but they do work for my daughter. But it's something to try and it's better than giving them tylenol all day! You might also pick up the "Feed me I'm yours" book (can find it at 1/2 price books) and make your own teething biscuits and mix his formula in them so he's still getting it. It may also be a good time to intro the sippy cup so he can bite on it and drink at the same time.

Good luck! Oh and remember, if he doesn't eat don't worry. It'll be over soon and he'll eat again.

I use to put wet baby wash cloths enclosed in a freezer bag in the freezer. I would pull them out, run a little water on the bag to loosen, and give to her to use. This provided her with hours of relief. Recommended by our doctor: Dye-free baby Tylenol applied with q-tip swab on sore gums also helped.

My son cried for months with teething pain. I found that Infant Tylenol drops work the best. Mine hated orajel too, but, sometimes for immediate relief until the tylenol kicks in it's the only thing. Also, I got Hyland's teething tablets....they are all natural and can be found almost anywhere in the baby section. I alternated them with Tylenol and they seemed to work pretty well. Also, one of those little net feeders for fruits and veggies are good. You can freeze carrots and apples or pears and put them in the net thing to keep cold....mine liked it better than any teething ring....don't waste your money...hope this helps.

My daughter hated Orajel too. At first it tastes awful and bitter. So knowing I had to do something to comfort mt baby, I would put just the smallest amount on her nipple. I'm talking a nano amount. Top or bottom depending on the location of the teeth that were trying to cut through. You wouldn't even know there was any on it! The orajel would immediately numb the gum area, and she could enjoy her bottle.

We all know Orajel wears off but it works! My daughter just turned 5 yrs old. When she gets a little fever blister and tells me it hurts, I hand her the Orajel and she puts just a little of it on the spot.Instant relief.

Teething Tablets that are homeopathic can be purchased in the vitamin section at Wal-mart or your local health food store. The bottle is small, white and has light pink and blue writing on the label. The tablets are very small and disolve instantly. We gave these to our son who is now 4 yrs and have heard others sing praises of just how well that they work. The tablets did not make our son sleepy or cause any other known side effects. Good luck!

I'm not sure how far you are from Plano but if you can make it to Whole Foods they have a great line of natural products by a company called Hylands. You can go to highlands.com and see all the products. Walmart carries the teething tablets. For his age you can dissolve them in a teaspoon of water or juice and he will have great relief. I just love them and they are all natural.

I hope this helps.

you're probably already doing this, but when mine was teething, I gave him infant motrin to help him sleep. the tylenol didn't seem to do the trick, so I used motrin.

I'm sorry he doesn't like orajel! that's no help. have you tried switching flavors? the poor thing. well, it won't last forever! he'll be fine soon...until his next set of teeth come along. this too shall pass.

Try Hyland Teething Tablets.... they are a homeopatheic tablet. They worked for both of my little guys, and I have recommeded them for many friends--everyone said they worked.
You can buy them at CVS, Albertsons in the baby section by the orajel type products. They come in a "hanging card" box container. Look for pink and light blue lettering/logos. Give 2-3 tablets at a time...

Also you can let your little boy chew on a frozen washcloth. Wet the center a clean washcloth and put in the freezer. Once the water is frozen, give it to them to chew and hold. The cold feels good and the nap of the washcloth massages their gums while they chew. It usually works for a little while.

good luck mommie!!!!

We also used the Hyland's Teething Tablets and they really seemed to help. I also dampen the corners of a few wash cloths and keep them in freezer... both of my girls loved teething on them.

My daughter is 3 months and got her first tooth two weeks ago. She was very fussy and I soothed her by rubbing her gums with my finger. I'm sure that you have probably tried this, but I thought I'd throw it out there anyway.

Hi A., My little one did something similar when he was teething. He used to nurse for a good while the all of a sudden he was on and right back off. Pediatrician reminded me he won't starve himself, and he didn't forget how to do it but it may hurt him to do it now with the teeth coming in. (his jaw may hurt and trying to make sucking motions only hurts more) Spoon food, cereal/jar stuff, is easier b/c he only has to swallow and not a lot of work involved. He told me not to make a big deal out of it or he may feel like I'm forcing him and he may fight me more. Just let him do what he wants and keep offering what you normally do. My boy didn't like Orajel either, not a lot helped him except chewing on stuff. Mine came around eventually so I guess he was right. Hope that helps or at least let's you know you aren't alone!

When my son was teething, I got the best advice from an AT&T operater. hehe. Anyway if you go to Walmart Pharmacy and ask them to order Hurricane Gel ($5.00 for a jar) it is what dentists use to numb your gums before shots. One jar will not only last throughout teething. It doesn't go down their throats causing them to choke and instantly numbs the area. Will give you much relief and comes in variety of flavors. One jar lasted through my son's molars. It was the best thing I ever found, but you do have to have the pharmacist order it, does not need prescription to get. Hope this helps you, after going through colic with son this was a blessing to find.

Oh...I'm sorry! Teething just sucks for everyone. Teething tablets worked wonders for my little girl. Some nights we have to do a combo package - infant Tylenol and teething tablets. The brand of tablets doesn't matter - the content is all the same.

As for eating, have you tried chilling the bottle? My girl loved having her bottle heated until she started teething. At that point, she wouldn't eat because the heat from the formula irritated her little gums. You'll probably find that your little one will eat more if the food is chilled (the cold helps numb the gums).

Good luck!

Hi A.,

I wouldn't worry about him not eating. The good thing about the teething is that the pain doesn't last for very long - it seems to come and go. He'll start eating and drinking when he's ready. You can also just give him a dose of Tylenol or Motrin about 1/2 an hour before his bottle should be. That will help dull the pain enough that he'll eat if he wants to. I didn't have any luck with either teething rings or other objects or the Orajel. Only the medicine worked.

Hi, When my son was teething, he didn't want his bottle either...but we would let him chew on frozen eggo waffles, and that helped him a LOT. We also were able to find ONE kind of teether that you could put in the freezer, and it was one that had a handle on it, and then a purple triangle thing on the other end filled with liquid that was freezable. Most aren't freezable because the edges can get hard while freezing and then cut the baby's gums, and possible break at those frozen seams, releasing the liquid inside, but the one I mentioned is freezer safe.
Good luck,
A.
