Teething and Diarrhea

I was wondering if any other moms had infants who had diarrhea when they were teething. My 9 month old son has 4 teeth coming in on his upper gums and he has had diarrhea for the last 2 days which in turn has led to diaper rash. I know how to treat the rash, but I wanted to know if it was common to have the diarrhea. My pediatrician said that it can happen when they're teething. I haven't introduced any new foods and he's eating fine and not running a fever. Any suggestions or input would be appreciated. I'm hoping the diarrhea stops soon!!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks to everyone who replied! The diarrhea is slowing down now and his diaper rash is looking better, too. He also seems a lot less fussy. I was just worried that the diarrhea was due to a bug he might have picked up, but now I know what to expect when he starts to get more teeth. Thanks again!!

my son is 16months and he's been teething on and off now since he was about 9 months. he has had really bad diarehha. corn startch seems to work the best for diaper rash or butt paste. I've been using the cornstartch for about 2 months he doesn't really get rashy as much.

Hi M., Both my kids now 3 & 8 got slight diarrhea when they were teething. In fact it was my way of knowing they were getting new teeth. I wouldn't worry about it just keep him clean & dry.

It is pretty normal. When my daughter was young, she'd have the messy poops and a little rash. My understanding is that because they drool a lot while , they swallow a lot of excess saliva which is kinda acidic.

hi M.,

I am a mother of 2 (girl almost 3 and my son 17 mo). My son had this problem and still does. When he first starting teething he started with the diarrhea and it got super smelly. I say he still does because he is teething now again. The diarrhea is not as bad it does occur. He is in the process of getting his canine teeth. Good luck!

Hi M., it has been a while now, but when my son was teething he definitely had looser stool from all the extra saliva. Molars especially caused a little diarhhea and/or there would be one throwing up episode in his crib per new tooth. We didn't have bad diarhhea from teething but he has harder poop than most (isn't it great what we can share as mommies!!!) so for his to be very loose is probably the equivalent of diarhhea for most other babies and kids. Also, 4 teeth at one time is probably a lot for his little body to handle.

You may want to try giving less things that can contribute to diarrhea while this teeth are coming in. More bananas and apples, less strawberries, blueberries, etc. Also, it can't hurt to give the pediatrician a call to hear what they think.

Good luck!!!

I definitely experienced that. I was told by hy son's ped that the diarrhea can be caused by them swallowing so much more saliva (my son drooled like crazy). My son was also breastfed, so his BMs were fairly loose anyway. I wouldn't worry, just make sure he drinks plenty and soothe the sore mouth! Good luck

Both of our boys had diarrhea when they had teeth coming in.

I hope that someone has some sort of solution for you; we just lived with it. Just make sure that you check the diapers often and keep the Balmex or Aveeno at hand.
