Tailbone, Sacral Pain While Pregnant

Hi mommas! I was hoping someone may have some advice about possible remedies for pain in my tailbone area. I am 25 weeks pregnant, and sit a computer for 7.5 hours a day while at work. As of about a week ago I had started having pain in my tailbone area after work, usually going away after moving around for a bit, though it has been getting steadily worse. As of yesterday, however the pain has become constant and even walking is now very uncomfortable (I think it's too early in my pregnancy to start waddling!). I know it is probably the long hours of sitting that have caused the problem, and I try to get up an move at least every hour or so, but I just can't fathom having to live with this pain for the next three months! (It has begun to interrupt my sleep, and it's hard to even get comfortable on my couch at home!) Any tips? Thank you!

So What Happened?

Thank you so much for all your advice and encouragement. I decided to see a chiropractor, and I have to say that the change has been significant. Though I still have pain during the waking hours when I twist or bend in certain directions, I am finally able to sleep again! I have also been doing stretches he recommended and have been alternating heating and icing my muscles. I borrowed a Yoga ball from a friend and it is fun to sit on at home when watching TV and definitely provides relief! Thank you for all your help!

I don't know if anyone else has suggested this, but pelvic floor physical therapy could be very helpful to you. Well trained pelvic floor PT's are few and far between but there is one on Beverly and one outside of the city as well - message me if you want their info! I love it - it has helped me so much.

I had the same problem and it really helped me to swim 1-2 times a week. The breast stroke was the best for my tailbone area because of the way you move your legs. After a few sore laps, my whole lower back loosened up and then I was fine for about a week until the pain came back and then I hit the gym again!

I had the SAME thing with both of my pregnancies. The two things that helped TREMENDOUSLY: 1 - my chiropractor. She specialized in pregnancy / family adjustments, so I was lucky there. But I think most chiropractors can do adjustments for pregnant women. Also, I got a special pillow to sit on at work - it had a spot cut out for my tailbone so I wasn't putting extra pressure on it. Good luck!

Hi there! I had a desk job while pregnant as well, and it's so rough to sit on that bum even when you're up every hour to use the bathroom and stretch! My tailbone shifted during pregnancy as well, and the only help I found was osteopathic manipulation. I did yoga and all the recommended stretches faithfully, but they only helped to a certain extent. In fact, my son is almost 13 months now and I just finally had my tailbone treated after his birth with osteopathic manipulation. I would have gone sooner, but it wasn't bothering me too much and treatments are expensive. If you can find a D.O. it's well worth it while you're pregnant--it helped me SOO much. They can get your spine straight and help that baby settle down low so you can breathe easy and eat, and walk without pain (and without cracking your bones. eww)! Some D.O.s don't do the manipulation, but just do regular allopathic medicine, so definitely ask before you make an appt if you go that route. If there's any way you could sit on a balance ball at work, that would help take the pressure off. Hope you find relief. You're definitely not alone.

I had this issue with my pregnancy and went to see a physical therapist once a week. She taught me various stretches and simple strengthening exercises that targeted that area. It really helped!

Hi A., i have terrible lower back problems, and while I was pregnant, it was a real problem. If I can tell you anything, ice it every day at least 4 to 6 times. Get an ice pack that you can leave at work, if possible, in the freezer... big enough for the small of your back. Ice is always a great relief, though most people lean towards heat. Heat's alright if you end with ice ONLY. Stick with ice. Also, on another note, if you want to explore a way to stay at home with your first born, please visit my website, and fill in the information, or email me directly. I'm doing it, and if I can you can too! ____@____.com or www.MommasDreamBiz.com I hope to hear from you... Get the ice pack :)

All I can say is welcome to pregnancy Mama!!!! :-) Keep walking as much as you can and make sure you have something under your feet at your desk. They should be propped up with your knees bent to relieve some pressure. My suggestion is a walk every day at lunch/after work/break (where you can fit it in) and a hot shower before bed to loosen up your muscles. Also, get your firefighter husband to oil his hands up and give you a massage!! :-> Do you have a yoga ball at home? It is a wonderful way to stretch out your back by laying across it backside and allowing your muscles to stretch. Other than that, you are in a third trimester phase. Smile and enjoy!

Hi A.,

Congratulations!

You should give massage therapy a try in addition to some of the suggestions you received already.

Not only can massage help with specific areas of pain & injury, but it can also do wonders for you to take 1 - 1 1/2 hours to yourself. Chances are you are feeling some other areas of tightness & pain the longer you let this go. Massage can help keep you limbre.

Find someone close by who specializes in prenatal/pregnancy massage.

I hope you find some relief & don't forget to take care of yourself! :)

Have you told your doctor about this. Maybe one of those donut pillows will work?

find a chiropractor that specializes in pregnancy. See http://www.icpa4kids.org/locator/index.php for one in your area. Your body is making so many changes it needs work to facilitate those changes and reduce your pain.
Good luck.

A.,
Congrats on your new baby girl! I know many ladies have suggested a chiropractor. I am a Physical Therapist and I'm not hugely fond of chiropractors because most (not all) don't give you any tools to maintain your new alignment. If you do choose to use one, make sure they specialize in pregnancy and give you some exercises to maintain and support your new alignment (otherwise you have to keep going and going). Otherwise, you can also try sitting on a theraball (available very cheaply from Walmart) insead of your office chair. Unlike an office chair that allows us all to slouch terribly and put ALOT of pressure on our tailbones, the ball forces you to shift your pelvis and sit up straight. It may take some experimenting to get the right size to still reach your desk comfortably but it should help with the pain. Best of luck and again CONGRATS!

I had this same problem when I was pregnant with my daughter. I went to physical therapy, and I was told that my tail bone had shifted from its normal position due to the hormone that allows our pelvises to open for birth. I had to go one a week if I remember correctly, but with massages they would "shift" my tailbone back into position and the paid would be gone!

Good Luck

Hi A., I had the same problem when I was pregnant, also working a desk job. I actually went to see a chiropractor which seemed to relieve some of the discomfort. Hope this helps.

I believe it most likely comes from the sciatic nerve. In pregnancy their is something like Sciatica( i might be spelling it wrong), where the pain comes from the back, and can run down a leg, causing a lot of pain. Most likely sitting for a long amount of time, without stretching could have put pressure on the nerve, which is causing you this pain.

Dear A.- I'd go to see a chiropractor. I had been seeing one prior to my pregnancy (with twins!) for sciatica, and continued to see her during my pregnancy. I NEVER had any back pain or discomfort while I was pregnant! I was very worried that I would, but she kept everything in alignment, and I did fine. Ask friends or co-workers if they have anyone that they see and can recommend to you. I wouldn't just pick one out of the phone book. My chiropractor is in Newton center. Let me know if you want her contact info. Enjoy your little one when she arrives!

Hi A.- sorry to tell you this, but it could be with you for the rest of your pregnancy...I had this w/ my first pregnancy and I was not sitting at a desk all day- I was teaching so I was on my feet alot, but it got to the point where walking up hills aggravated it, or hard walking in general- i really had to curb my exercise, etc. which was a bummer...It was very on and off- I'd have it for a few days and then it would be gone for a week and then come back...it has to do with the shifting, etc. of your pelvic area and the baby putting more and more pressure on it!

I always tried to do some stretching for the area, and even some yoga- I can't say anything was a sure fix, just that this is one of those things some women have... I'm in my second pregnancy now and it hasn't been a big issue yet (yeah!!), though I'm holding my breath on that- a friend of mine who didn't have it first time aroudn is now dealing w/ it in her second pregancy. I think it all has to do w/ how the baby is situated, etc.

Stretch when you can! Try not to aggravate it and just count it as one of the wonderful preggo symptoms!!

I don't have experience with this from my pregnancies (though I am an expert on hypertension while pregnant!!) but my first thought was to try a chiropractor, perhaps. I actually have lower back and sciatic nerve issues that flare up when pregnant and EVERY month right before my period, and my chiro has helped with the pain. It doesn't totally disappear, but it does help. Your situation might be different but it's worth a try. One of my good friends had similar pain during her first pregnancy, but not her second, and like the previous poster said, it didn't really ease up until after the baby was born. :( You might also try the natural remedies section of Whole Foods to see if there is anything you can rub on that area, like a holistic Ben-Gay maybe, or even something to take to lessen the pain a little. I love that section of the store - they have natural remedies for a lot of what ails us and most of them actually work! Good luck and hang in there. The end is the hardest time but it's worth it!
