I went to the Emler school on Park and Preston when my son was only 6-months old. Granted, it was more for the bonding of Mommy and Me time, as opposed to actually learning how to swim. I don't think they learn how to actually swim from swim lessons until they are a lot older. To be honest though, for that age group, I wasn't really impressed. It was fun to get in the pool and swim with my baby, but it was always so extrememly crowded. They had at least three classes going on at the same time in a pool that was not very big at all. For the price that you pay, you would think they could afford to have not so many kids in the pool at one time.

My son just finished also and loved it. I wasn't sure what to expect because he is just 3 years old but by the end of the session he is able to swim under water by himself (no floaties) for up to 9 seconds and they taught him to jump in the pool and be able to turn around and pull himself out by himself. We put him in lessons because my son has no fear of the water and this has definitely helped. We will also be skipping the summer session because we spend so much time at the pool and I am having a baby in about a month so our schedules are going to be hectic this summer but we will definitely re-enroll him next year. I loved his teacher and I think we got our moneys worth considering he can now swim if he had to.

I read that one of the kids swims with floaties. I am a water survival instructor and strongly suggest you do not use flotation devices on your children. It gives them a false sense of security, which is dangerous, and sets them up for a bad body posture when swimming (vertical instead of horizontal). Obviously,if you are on a boat, you should use a life jacket.

I am a swim instructor with Infant Swimming Resource and teach out of my home in Plano. If you are truly worried about your child being water safe, this is an amazing technique. I teach water survival skills to kids 6 mo (if they're crawling)-6yrs. This means if your child falls into the pool, he'll learn to swim with his face in the water, roll onto his back and float, then flip over to swim and continue the sequence until he gets to the steps or side to get out. For kids over 12 mo, it typically takes about 4-6 wks. Kids under 12 or 13 mo learn to float until someone can get to them, and this usually takes about 4 wks. All lessons are individualized and one on one. You can check out the technique at www.infantswim.com.

I have a 3 yr. old currently in Emler and not impressed with the amount of money spent. Yes, he does go under the water now and they do teach water safety, but this week is the last week of classes and by no means can he swim by himself (including the other 3 kids in his class)..yes, he can be pulled through the water for 7 seconds, but still doesn't get the hang of using his arms to go any distance. Also keep in mind - no make-up classes allowed...I learned this the hard way...when I signed up, they said make-up classes were allowed and more recently recanted that statement saying it wasn't beneficial to the children and messed up their scheduling...so if you are planning to go out of town throughout the summer, keep this in mind.

Any other suggestions for swim schools would be great in the Coppell area?

Absolutely! My daughter will be completing her first session next week. At the beginning she was hesitant to even put her face in the water. Last weekend she swam across our entire pool w/out any assitance from us with only her arm floaties. They teach them safety too, so she knows what to do if she falls in and if someone else falls in. We're skipping the summer since we now have a pool in our backyard, but I will definitely be signing her up again in the Fall to learn technique. I highly reccommend it!

YES! Next week my 3 year old will complete his session. Sadly we're moving in 5 weeks, otherwhise I would have come back with all my 3 kids! We go to Colleyville. All the personell is very friendly. And if you watch a lesson for swimming with little ones (1,5 year???) it is amazing! They are swimming under water for a long time.
If you are looking only for your child to learn it to climb out of a pool when it falls in (water safety), go to Lonestar swimschool in Coppell. Very cheap, very relaxed. Only in summer because its in the backyard pool.

Good luck
