Still Bleeding After 3 Months

I am wanting to know if there is anyone out there with the same problem. I had my daughter 3 & 1/2 months ago and am still bleeding. It is not heavy most of the time except for an occassional gush maybe every three-four weeks for an hour. My doc performed a dnc 2 weeks ago thinking that would stop the bleeding. It did for one day. Yeah!! then it started right back up to me going through 1-2 pads a day. She also had me try birth control which didn't change to blood flow at all. I am also breast feeding and the milk supply didn't change with the birth control. My doc told me to stop the birth control and take cytotec for two days. I am going to try that and hopefully it will stop. Has anyone else tried cytotec. My doc said she has never seen this in the 15 years that she has been practicing. She is also looking at having a blood test drawn to check for clotting disorders and she is sugesting I maybe look into mirena which I am a little skeptical about.

What can I do next?

I have actually heard of it. My friend had her's for about a year after she had her second child. She got an iud and still stayed on hers. She then had to take birth control along with the iud. She did eventually get the iud removed and stayed on birth control for a while until it finally regulated.

When I had my oldest daughter I bled for 6 months. I was breast feeding so my dr had put my on a low estrogen birth control pill so as not to cut down my milk supply. When she found out that I was still bleeding she put me back on my regular birth control it stopped almost immediately. Hope this helps.

I agree with Jodie on getting a second or even a third doctor's opinion if you really feel you need it! Meanwhile make sure you are eating healthy, taking a multivitamin with iron. when we have our regular period our bodies tend to be weaker than the rest of the month. If you bleed (not spotting) quite a bit, chances are you might feel like you need extra energy and you need to be healthy for you and for your baby. Something to think about and you didn't mention it, is whether you are breast feeding your baby or not. In my case I breast feed my youngest and my bleeding after having a c-delivery, was irregular. It took me longer to get back to normal or have a normal period due to the c-delivery and to be nursing( can't re-call the exact time but around 4 months). Hope you'll find the right answers soon!

God bless,

Hey A. L.. I recently just had my second child on Jan.28,2012.. It's been 3 months since I had him and I'm still bleeding.. I'm scared and don't know what to do. I told my doctor about it and the only thing she did was prescribed me some pills to make me bleed heavier so I can stop bleeding.. It didn't help.. I never had a DNC ever. All my tests came out negative.. Can you please shine some light on this situation?

Don't know that this will be any help at all but after I had my last daughter I was bleeding for almost a year and what a pain that was. It was not a heavy bleeding but enough to be a big bother. I had a laproscopic surgery done and what they found was that I had fibroids and a 3rd degree prolaps of the uterus, ( sorry about the spelling). But I was also having some night sweats with mine. They had also tried hormon theropy and that worked for a few days and then roght back to the same thing. In the end unfortuantly I had a hystorectomy. I had also had a dnc to try to stop the bleeding. I know that this may not be the responce you were hoping to hear but I tought you might want to know what I ended up having done when I continued to bleed.

I would say that doesn't sound normal. I would request as many tests as you can and maybe get another doctor's opinion if you can.

I was in the same situation as you after the birth of my last child, who just turned five. After giving birth to him I bleed for a year straight, everyday. I kept going to the Dr. went from 1 DNC's to 2 DNC's to no avail. Went thru several different types of meds that were suppose to help, still nothing happened. When my baby turned 14 months I ended up having a hysterectomy. BEST THING I HAVE EVER DONE!!, I just wanted you to know that you are not the only one that has been thru this. I can't believe that your Dr. made you feel like that you were one of the few cases, it happens more than we all know. Hope this makes you feel better. If you have any more questions, just ask I'll be happy to answer any that you might have. It's a BUMMER keep your head up!

I every much hope this is not the case with you but thought I would share. After my mother had me (36 years ago) she had one period, it lasted for 1 1/2 years until she had a historectomy. I really hope it does not come to such drastic measures with you.

Hi, A.,

The only thing I can say with any certainty is that, while you and your doctor are figuring out what is going on, you need to supplement with iron. Just adding more iron-rich foods to your diet probably won't suffice with this long-term blood loss going on. I'm using chlorophyll for my pregnancy anemia, which, unlike most iron supplements, doesn't cause constipation.

Iron deficiency can show up in the form of weakness and fatigue (hard to distinguish from being a new mom!), and, more specifically, pale or even bluish or greenish skin and light blue fingernails when resting (they might pink up with even light flexing, etc.). Also, you might be experiencing occasional dizziness, rapid/hard pulse, and palpitations. Sometimes people don't run into symptoms at all till they really start to crash.

It might be that you had a placental abruption that went unnoticed and is like a cut that never scabs. That is the only thing I can think of.

You might want to consult with a midwife. They know a lot of things that the doctors don't, and might be able to help you resolve the problem without getting a hysterectomy or other invasive procedure that has life-long consequences. I have found my midwives, and the ones whose books I've read, to be so knowledgeable, that from now on I will always take any of my reproductive health issues to THEM.

I hope your doctor warned you not to take asprin? Also, avoid flaxseed/oil, cod liver oil, fish oil supplements, and other things that thin your blood and increase your blood loss (or may even be the cause!). Check all of your supplements to see if they can cause this, too.

Take good care of yourself.

Is your doctor a gynecology? If not I would say you need to see a specialist for women health care! I went to the ER for bleeding a few years ago, the ER doc told me I had started my period. I went to my gyn doc the next day, I was hemmorging.. Something has to be wrong, 3 months is a long time after having birth. Hope they figure it out.

With my son, I was still bleeding after 3 months. It wasn't constant; I would skip a couple days and think that I was through and then it would come back. I kept thinking that I was getting my period! I can't remember exactly when it stopped, but I know it was at least 3 months. And I got my period 6 months after he was born. I really don't have much advice, since you've already gone to the doctor. Just that I know every woman is different.

I had that problem with my fourth child which I had by c-section. the doctor said it was nothing to worry about unless I went through a box of pads in a day. I don't know what he was thinking but I was tired. Just make sure you take your iron pills.

A.,
This has nothing to do with having bleeding problems after childbirth; but when I started my periods, at the young age of 10, I would have them for 30 days straight. My doctor then told me that I was Iron deficient, which was causing me not to clot, and started me on an Iron program. That may be the problem, but do check into the prolapse uterus too.

I am now 45 years old and am still having to take iron supplements.
Good Luck and Congratulations on the birth of your daughter !

Hi A., I had the same thing happen to me after my second child. We were in the middle of a move and I never went to the doctor, but it did eventually stop. I think I bled for about 5 months just like you said; sometimes it was very heavy but then it would lighten for awhile. I had actually had the mirena placed at my 6 week check up right before we moved, so I kind of blamed the bleeding on that, but once I went to the GYN in the new city I had stopped bleeding and he didn't seem too concerned about it. I hope this eases your mind a little, but I wouldn't stop trying to find out what is going on. K. L.

I also bled for 3 months after the birth of my first child which caused all kinds of other problems from always wearing a pad. My doctor put me on birth control pills to control the hormones which stop the bleeding and it finally did stop. I'm not a big fan of birth control pills, and after being diagnosed with cervical cancer after this particular birth, I no longer use birth control pills. I have had some success with Arbonne's natural balancing cream to control bleeding. I since had 2 other children, and no long-term bleeding.

I would get a second opinion for sure. I did have a similar problem after having my son. My doctor put me on a very strong birth control and I took 2 pills daily for a little while . This did stop the bleeding. For years after I would have break through bleeding. If I didn't take my pill by 2 or 3 pm I would start bleeding. I have a friend who uses mirena and she hardly ever even has a period. I am skeptical also about trying stuff like that, but my friend loves hers.

I bled after giving birth as well...for almost two months. For me Mirena was the only choice for me. I did not want children right away and I wanted to stop bleeding without having to take all my girly parts out...stoped almost immediatly (bleeding) I have not had a period in almost three years and I could not be happier...but it is personal preference. a lot of people think we need to bleed to clean out our systems..I don't think that way..all I know is I don't bleed anymore and my cramps are few and far between, I am a happy mommy of a three year old girl...good luck to you!

Ask your doctor about taking the depopreva shot or birth control pills rather then mirena - it helped to regulate me. Even if you don't want to stay on it, one of two months may help.

Sounds like you need to go see another Dr. and get a second opinion. Are you taking any form of birth control? I know this can cause bleeding as well. Are you nursing? All of these things can contribute. Best of luck!

Hello, A.! I completely understand how frustrated you must be! I have 3 children, and bled for what seemed like forever with each of them. With my 1st 2 I was told to wait it out. With the 3rd, I became anemic. My doctor put me on birth control pills, which I took 2 a day for 10 days. What that did was basically "restart" my internal clock. It worked! This might be something worth mentioning to your doctor. However, if you are breatfeeding, birth control pills tend to dry up your milk supply. Good luck!

I'm not sure the Mirena would help. I had it put in at my 6 week follow up after having a baby and have not stopped bleeding since (5 weeks). The doctor did tell me that the first 3 months would be irregular, but if using Mirena is supposed to be your solution, I'm not sure it would be helpful to stop the bleeding!

can't tell you anything about the bleeding, but I can share about the Mirena. I got it when my 2nd son was 20 months...couldn't remember the pill and was terrified to have another baby right now. I got it halfway through my cycle, first period after was longer and I spotted for most of the month until my next period. It was much lighter and shorter. I have NO side effects but still get to have my normal hormonal cycle. I strongly recommend it. BUT, your doc needs to get that other issue figured out before you go for the mirena.

I have had the same problems after i had both of my girls. My, now 2 and a half year old after I had her, I wouldn't quit bleeding went to doc and he couldn't understand it. So he scheduled a laporscopic and a DNC to find out why, but that didn't show me anything. After the DNC and laprascopic I quit bleeding. I couldn't see why the DNC didn't work. Have you had any problems with your blood clotting otherwise, like with a cut. The meds that u are on I never even heard of, I hope that it works and I hope that you don't any clotting disorders. I hope things work out for u, I still couldn't see why the DNC didn't work.
