I would like and appreciate any help whether negative or positive on the subject of soy formula vs. regular formula. I am breast feeding but supplementing w/ soy after trying regular. I have heard mixed opinions about soy. I want to know if it is good for my baby? I already know that breast feeding is best, and I am doing that as much as I can but I have to supplement due to low milk supply. Thanks in advance for any info!!

What can I do next?

Either formula is fine. If you can afford it...opt for organic. If not, goodstart is the best that I know of. Congrats on the new baby!

Here's an article worth checking out about soy formulas. It's from the standpoint that soy is not a good option.

Hope this helps in your decision making process. There are of course things you can do to increase your own supply of breastmilk!!

HI N.,

I just wanted to let you know that we fed our little girl Soy formula the first yr of her life and she did great! She wasn't able to drink the regular stuff b/c it was too harsh on her stomach. Anyway...she is happy, healthy, and we have had NO problems with her. We gave her the Nestle Good Start formula. It's expensive, but they are worth it.

My son was put on soy formula (was in NICU for a week--long story) because of an intolerance of regular formula & his reflux. He drank that for the first year, switched to whole milk when he was a year, & we haven't had any problems.

Good luck!

My daughter is 3 months old and drinks Good Start Soy without any problems. She is so happy and growing like a weed! For the first 2 weeks of her life I nursed exclusively, then started adding a bottle or two a day. My pediatrician said that breastfed babies do better on soy, that is causes less gas & fussiness. She is now completely formula fed as of last week and she is doing great! I did try to give her the milk-based Good Start, but she spit up a lot so we put her back to soy and no problems!

I am doing the same thing. I breastfeed as much as I can and I supplement with soy formula when I work. I was pumping, but two electic pumps broke and i can't afford any more. My baby like yours didn't take well to regular formula. I think soy is better than the regular dairy formula. It still isn't the best of course only breast milk is, but if your baby doesn't take well to the regular formula that means it's not good for the baby's body. Of course people are going to tell you things about soy and every other thing you do as a mother. You just do what you think is best. The most important thing is that the baby at least gets some breast milk. Those benefits no formula can compare to.

Hi N.,
From what I remember about Soy is that it's mainly used if your baby is allergic to something in regular formula.
My neice had what they thought was very bad baby acne and it turned out to be a rash from her formula so they switched her to Prosobee soy and it went completely away.
Same happened to my son yet it wasn't so severe and the formula helped for his rash.
When the rash was finally gone, we put him back on Enfamil Lipil.
I personally feel if your baby has no allergies to regular formula, to keep her on that before soy.
Feel free to email me with any questions.
K.

I chose soy formula in supplementing situations with my kids because it was cheaper than the organic cow milk formula. I have read where all the hormones cows receive to mass produce milk is contributing to early onset of puberty among other horrible stuff. For that reason, we stick to cow milk alternatives unless it is organic. My two year old still likes Step 2 soy formula in her sippy cup over regualr milk, whick is great by me!
As far as breastfeeding goes, are you getting enought rest? If you can, spend a day on the couch cluster feeding on demand all day drinking lots of water. It worked wonders for my milk supply when I was for sure I was going to dry up!
All the best, Liz

Besides the facts that it STINKS! Just know that soy formulas must be highly fortified compared to milk-based formulas b/c soy lacks so many nutrients important for baby's growth & development, and there are concerns out there regarding the plant sterols/ plant based estrogens causing not being the best for development either...just way too much estrogen in the soy. Many in the "health food community" are pulling back from soy products as good alternatives to meat/ dairy, b/c of these concerns. Moderation in all things!

Talk with the babys pedi. I used regular formula but my daughter got sick and he told me to use soy while she was sick and she took to it so much better and had less gas etc.. that I made the switch permantely. One mom mentioned about the hormone in Soy? Dont know if you know but baby foods and formula goes though stricter regulations and testing than any other thing out there. The FDA is so strict on what our babys can drink or eat, that they would not put something on the market as soy formula that would potentally hurt our kids. Soy formula has been around for a while, if there was a problem with it, it would have been pulled or by prescipt only. The only problem with Goat milk is that is dosnt go through 1/2 the testing that formula goes through, it dosnt have any of the standards or regualtions that formula dose, and isnt regulary FDA montoried. I would not put your baby on anything that isnt formula, that includes goat milk. . I love the way my baby responded to soy milk that if we have another that is the formula I will start with, I wish I could breast feed, I didnt produce any milk with my last. One mom posted a webpage about the dangers or soy. If you read it carefully the parents fed soy MILK not soy formula and it clearly states that you should not feed your baby soy MILK when the baby should be on formla. Buy one small can of each and work with your pedi and find what is right for your baby.

When we transitioned from breast to bottle we used fresh goat milk. It is easier to digest than cows milk without the horomone concern of soy. Our doctor prescribed an iron/vitamin supplement that we added to it and that is it. I would highly recommend fresh as opposed to store bought. I can direct you to a dairy if you are interested.
