my sister was told on one it was a boy, then they were positive it was a girl in about three of them, so they finally paid to have the 3D one done and it was definently a boy. if you have the money get the 3D its cool anyways

Hi, J.,

I'm a prenatal yoga instructor and, over the last 3 years, I had 3 students to whom it happened- relatively to the number of students I get over that time frame, I would say that's a fairly low percentage, but, yes, it happens!

that is very interesting and I personally know someone that had that happen. The funny thing is when I was pregnant with my son I kept telling myself I was having a little girl and I ended up having a boy. Happy either way. My mom on the other hand was told via sonogram when she was pregnant with me that she was having a boy so her and my dad already had boy clothes, boy names, etc, but when she gave birth to me I came out a girl. Needless to say everyone was shocked including my parents.

The only way to know 100% is to do an amnio. I've know a mom who was told originally she was going to have a boy. It wasn't until a few weeks before delivery when they did a sono again that she found out it was a girl. It does happen but I don't know what percentage of time they're right or wrong. Some babies just won't let you know either (they cross legs, etc..)

Hi J.,

With my second - who I had 11 weeks ago - I was told it was a girl (I had two ultrasounds - one at 20 weeks and one at 24 weeks) and it turned out to be a boy. If I get pregnant again and am told it is a girl I am definitely going to go to one of those 3D ultrasound places to make sure that is accurate!

Good luck! C.

I've had 3 friends that this happened to but this was about 7 years ago... 2 said they were girls and they were boys and only 1 said it was a boy and it turned out to be a girl... everyone I know now a-days goes to get those 3-d ones.... I've heard that they'll give you 100% diagnosis it's a boy but not 100% it's a girl.... maybe it's vice versa.... one of them is harder to "find" than the other one I was told... both of mine they said a boy and both of mine were boys.... guess you'll never really know until the big day! :) Good luck.

J., they told me my daughter was going to be a boy at 4 months and turned around a few months later and said oh its a girl! So yes this can happen. Just depends on the doctor and equipment I guess. Good Luck and congrats! M.

My sister has two girls. One is 13 and the other is nine , but when she had the sonogram for one of them, not quite sure which one, she was told that it was a boy. The doctor couldn't tell on eith er of my children's. So both of my children were suprises to me. Boy and a girl! So don't worry it happens more than you think. Just have everyone but you neutral colors until you know for sure. Can't go wrong with that.

I had a sonogram done when I was almost 5 months I like it was and I was told that she was a girl and the only way that they know was because my daughter had her legs out so far that there was no way of not know. My husband parents were told that he was going to be girl, it is just really hard I wish that I would have gotten more the one sonogram to just make sure but I was luckly that it truned out the way it did

With my 3rd daughter they told me she was going to be a boy and this was just over a year ago. It wasn't until we did the 3D ultrasound that they said it might be a girl. Of course we had a girl and I always had a feeling she was going to be another girl anyways.

I also had a sono at 4 1/2 months and was told I was having a girl.(who turned out to be a boy!) They should be giving u another sono to determine placement and can check again then. Ask your OB about it.

YES!!!! It happened to me when I had the first one done at Parkland. I was told "it's a boy!" I prepared and had all kinds of boy stuff picked out and everything. My auntie told me something about my stomach and it's position or whatever and suggested I get another one done. I took her advice. I had to get iron shots in the butt during the last 4 months of my pregnancy ( 1 a month). I asked my doc to do a sonogram... He did and said it was a girl. I was shocked and told him i just had one done about a month before and was told it was a boy. He told me my daughter's umbilical cord was between her legs and she shifted herself (somehow)and it wasn't there anymore. I was confused!!!! For my babyshower I changed the color to YELLOW....*smile*

I have heard it happening pretty often when it is said to be a girl, and then it is a boy. I was told it is becuase the testicals are up inside and sometimes don't come down untill late in the pregnancy, there for hard to tell. I don't think I have ever heard it happening when they said it was a boy and then turned out to be a girl.

From what I have read, a girl is "misdiagnosed" more than a boy. You could always ask for another one. I only found out with my 2nd daughter & you could not see any boy parts what so ever so it was pretty clear. However, I am pregnant again & should find out in 2 weeks if it is a boy or girl. After reading these...I guess I won't put too much faith in what is determined.

Yes, I was told from my 20 week check-up all the way until the last month of my pregnancy that I was having a girl and turned out at the very last minute, and all pretty baby girl stuff later that I was having a boy! Big surprise. You will get another sonogram in a few more weeks. You can ask the doctor to confirm it again. Sometimes when someone beside a doctor gives you an sonogram then they can be wrong. I have had 2 other children since and those were both right on. I would take the doctors word for it.
Congrats

J.,

I do ultrasounds and just wanted to let you know that accuaracy depends on the person doing the ultrasound. They have to know what they are doing to be able to determine gender. Unfortunately some of the people out there doing ultrasounds aren't that good at it or they are too quick to make a guess if they aren't sure. Personally, I won't tell parents the gender if I am not certain. But a lot of techs out there will make guesses. It also depends on how cooperative the baby is. Sometimes they have the legs wide open and we get a great shot. Other times they can have their legs crossed and make it impossible to see. Did they print you a picture? If you want to email it to me I will take a look and see what I think. I saw that someone recommended a 3d ultrasound. I think those are wonderful. I had several done at work when I was pregnant with my daughter. But a word of warning. Some of those places have people doing the scan that don't have much training. I suggest trying to find someone that is ARDMS registered. That means they have completed a certain amount or required education and were able to pass a board exam. Not everyone doing ultrasuond has passed those tests. Some haven't even had enough education to be eligable to take the test.

I have known people this has happened to. In fact, they were pretty unsure with the sex of my first child (I had 3 sonograms to confirm). We went to Stork Vision in North Richland Hills - you can have a very personal sonogram and you can come back if they are unable to determine 100%. Check out their web site at http://storkvision.com/ They are very reasonable and we got a great keepsake — a 20 minute sonogram of our precious little girl!

J.,
My sister-in-law was told 3 times that she was having a girl. They had the colors all done for a girl, bought lots of girly outfits, etc. Then at the hospital when the baby was born...It was a BOY! She called my mom and told her to take back all the frilly girl clothes because she had a grandson not a granddaughter. It happens all the time. Although with mine, my son was very obvious he was a boy. My daughter on the other hand after 2 sonograms, we still did not know. She was very "bashful" but my hubby "knew" she was a girl. I would say either go with your gut instincts or buy non-gender specifics until you know for sure. With my daughter since we did not know, I bought one boy outfit and one girl outfit to bring her home from the hospital and then a very dear friend of mine bought her several girly outfits after she was born (the day she came home).
