Something Dumb I'd like to Share About Popcorn

Did you know that you can microwave regular popcorn in a plain paper bag? Why did I not know this before? Now whenever the kids want popcorn, I throw about 1/3 cup of popcorn kernels into a brown paper bag and microwave on high for about two minutes. Voila! And then I spray it with a little olive oil or grape seed oil and sprinkle salt on it. If I'm the one eating it, I put grated cheese on top and microwave it some more until the cheese is melted. It's really cheap, low in calories, and has no transfats. Hope you're all having a good day.

So What Happened?

Thanks for the comments, everyone. This is healthier popcorn is now a part of our family movie nights.

And yes, all you have to do is fold over the top of the bag a couple times, and it stays closed. You can even reuse the bag several times.

My family loves popcorn and we always have regular popcorn on hand, but I don't always have the time to make it. With this, I can have the kids do it! Thank you!

Just don't use a wire twist tie to close the bag. Learned that one the hard way!

I've heard this too. And with the lining in the regular microwave bags that is harmful to your health...this is the way to go! Thanks for reminding me...we don't usually eat popcorn, but now that I am trying to be healthier....i may want some good plain popcorn!

That is how we used to make it back in the early 80's when we got our first microwave. Soon after they started selling microwave popcorn, and the "word" was that it wasn't good for your microwave to use the paper bag method. (I'm sure the microwave popcorn people started that rumour.) Anyway, we stopped using the paper bag because in those days the microwave was an expensive, high tech appliance, and we didn't want to risk breaking it.

Yep, that's how we did it when our family got our first microwave in the mid 80s. It was even in the recipe book that came with that nifty new appliance.

Thank you!

We don't use the microwave popcorn because I am uncomfortable with the chemicals in the lining of the bag. My daughter loves popcorn and we always pop it in an air popper.

I am going to try your microwave technique next time. Sounds quicker, and less mess!

even making it in a pot on the stove is easy. We have been doing it a lot lately. For another topping I melt butter in the microwave with a couple cloves of pressed garlic. Pull out the garlic before tossing the popcorn in it. SOOOOO YUMMY!

Yes!! I have been doing this for a couple of years. The cool thing is 4 cups of popcorn are only 100 calories. Even if you add 1 tablespoon of butter that only makes the 4 cups 180 calories. And 4 cups is a lot of popcorn.

I have a big plastic microwave popcorn bowl that I use. Next time I can't find it I'll have to try the paper bag instead.

We like to microwave duritos. This seems to be a mexican snack which I had never heard of until I moved to Texas. It looks like wheel-shaped dried noodles and is usually fried.

Wow, did not ever think of this! Thanks for the tip, will definitely try it! We used to make our own popcorn on the stove but it always burned the bottom of the pan. Never thought of the bag in the microwave!
