I have a 10 yr old daughter who is really interested in sewing and crafting. I would like to get her a basic sewing machine for Christmas. What are some suggestions of brands/types I could get? I currently don't own one myself so I know very little about them...
Thanks Mamas!

My husband bought me a Baby Lock. (Mid range). He did a lot of research. Turns out sewing is not my thing but my 10 yo loves it. She took a private lesson to learn how to use the machine then she went to a week long sewing camp last summer. She was recently in a musical, playing the part of Little Red Riding Hood and she made her own cape. ☺️

Go for a Brother or Babylock mid range. If you have a dealer near you visit them. They may have a nice machine gently used in a trade up. You would also get lessons on how to use the machine.

We have not suggested Singer as it is not the machine of your mom or grandmom. The company was sold and the machines are made by different manufacturers who put the Singer label on them.

Who knows, you might get interested and become the next home decorator.

Happy holidays.

You can sometimes find good, used machines at JoAnn's and other fabric/sewing shops. JoAnn's will often sell good-quality Singer teaching machines for a decent price. Here's a very basic Singer machine:

I just borrowed my young friend's Singer Millenium Series machine and it worked like a dream. (Mine's an old 50's Kenmore with cogs and doesn't do stretch fabrics.) Oh, and avoid anything computerized. :) If you get a used machine, be sure you get the manual, too.

My daughter loves to sew and create all kinds of things.

About 4 yrs ago, after a lot of research, we bough a BabyLock for her. We chose this particular machine because it is used in our school system as well. I figured if they don't get destroyed by multiple students using them, they must be good!

At the time of our purchase, there were 3 different levels.. a very basic which did not include button holes for instance, a mid level which had a lot more options on types of stitches and made button holes, and the higher level which just and way too many bells and whistles for her.

We opted for the mid level and we paid a little less than $400. She has used it a lot and it is a good machine. We've never had an issue with it.

I am not a seamstress and I didn't know much about machines. We went to a sewing store and they also provide lessons as well.

I agree with not getting a kid machine. Brother and Singer are brands I have owned over the years. I would also say steer away from computerized machines too.

Sewing is fun and rewarding. Target sells some very nice machines.

I can do everything I want on a basic brother machine, you can get one for under $150. I have had my current one for 10 years now and it still works great. I think it is a perfect machine for a beginner, very easy to use and work with.
