Hi ladies, I'm about 12 weeks pregnant... had some backpain from the begining of my pregnancy... and all of a sudden this week i have been experiencing SUCH sever joint pain it's getting unbereable... it started monday when i woke up and my ankles were in sooo much pain.. i could barely walk then it went to my wrists... knees... and last night to even my elbows... this is all within 4 days. I feel handicapped and can't do anything. I talked to my dr yesterday and she said i need to relax, not pick up my daughter (2) and go to physical therapy.. but I don't think this is normal. I couldn't even open a water bottle this morning to take my pill. I have hypothyroidism... taking synthroid... but it's under control. Has anyone else experienced this?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I wanted to thank everyone for all your suggestions and kind words. I had an ultrasound the day I posted my request, and that Dr. sent me straight to a rheumatologist. The rheumatologist gave me a steroid shot (i think) for the pain which helped a lot, and ran blood tests. Blood work and more bloodwork later, the results were ready and I was to hear from my rhuematologist monday afternoon. I had a checkup with my obgyn monday morning and told him what had been going on... and actually found out that I miscarried. My obgyn immediately contacted my rheumatologist, specially to find out he didn't give me anything to cause the miscarriage. They spoke, and their conclusion is that I have may have lupus. They're not sure if it's permanent or temporary (some woman just develop this during pregnancy and goes away after about 6 weeks). I had a D&C on tuesday to have the fetus removed since I was about 4 months when I miscarried. They've sent everything to the lab to find out exactly what happened to the baby, and my rheumatologist is running even more tests now. It's been extremely h*** o* my husband and I dealing with this miscarriage, and I'm just so scared if I ever get pregnant again... what's going to happen... but I'm glad to have so much support from family and friends, and to you moms on mamasource for lending an ear and your advice.

Dear Sarah, this does not sound normal to me either. I would try to get as much rest as I could if I were you. Follow the doctors advice for now, if only to prove him/her wrong. Give the therapy a little time to work. If I did't feel better soon I would push my doctor for answers better than the one's he/she has given you so far. I hope you feel better very quickly.

I experienced this but not when I was pregnant. I went to the doctor and had blood drawn. I was diagnosed with two things, so I wasn't sure which one caused the pain. The two things were limes disease, which comes from a tick bite, and monocucleosis, which we used to call "the kissing disease". I don't know if you're pain is pregnancey related or not. Go have a blood test done to find out for sure.

Debilitating joint pain is NOT OKAY! Particularly with your history of thyroid issues, request that your doctor order an ANA blood test- anti-nuclear antibodies - the hallmark of auto-immune issues. And PLEASE DON'T take supplements without the advice of your doctor, or a naturopath! I think they're great, but under supervision only during pregnancy. Best of luck! By the way, any recent illness/flu symptoms or rash recently? If so, mention this to your doctor. Be a squeeky wheel. ADVOCATE for your health and your baby's!

Hi
I would get your thyroid rechecked. Achy joints are a symptom, and pregnancy can wreak havoc on your thyroid. It will need to be monitored closely throughout your pregnancy. I had to more than double my dosage throughout my 2nd pregancy
Good luck

Hi Sarah.

Did you do anything physical & out of your ordinary routine to provoke the joint pain? Like start any new yoga or pilates class? I usually recommend glucosamine & chondroitin(often comes as a combo supplement) for someone who has arthritis type pain in the joints.

Good Luck.

Get a therapeutic full body Massage. Be sure the therapist is using a safe oil/lotion that doesn't have any essential oils nor aromatherapy oils in it. Nor mineral oil. If you are in the So OC area call ###-###-####

Congrats on your pregnancy. I am sorry to hear of the pain. I would definately talk to your doctor more but I would also look into finding a massage therapist who not only specializes in japanese restoration massage but is licensed to do massages on pregnant women. I see a massage therapist monthly and when I was pregnant it was a life saver. You might even be able to find one that can be in the delivery room with you. Mine was and I will tell you that if it was not for her I would have taken an epidural very early on but instead I went medication free. Hope this helps and good luck.

hi-
so sorry you are having pain and discomfort. i would ask your doctor to test your thyroid levels. this happened to me and i went through my whole pregnacy, and 4 months after, with an unknown hypothyroid issue. symptoms are extreme fatigue and joint/muscle aches (among others). it is an easily corrected problem. good luck and i hope you are feeling better soon!

First, congratulations on your pregnancy! I had severe pain in both my hands and wrists. It started in my hands in the second trimester, expanded to my wrists in the third trimester. After the baby was born, the hand pain went away in about 6 weeks but the wrists became even more severe. I am sure this is because I was now picking up my son all the time. I did go to physical therapy, which did help...however, I still have pain to this day. Occasionally I take some Motrin for pain. I find as the muscles and ligaments strengthen the pain diminishes. It also seems to be aggravated by stress. I would take your doctor's advice...minimize lifting your daughter, get some physical therapy, and try to relax and reduce your stress (externally and internally). From everything I've read, this is happening because your body is releasing hormones to help loosen your pelvis for the pregnancy, however it can't pinpoint one specific area so all the joints and ligaments are affected. Not to mention the swelling that comes during pregnancy. Good luck and I hope that you're feeling better soon. Best wishes for a happy and healthy delivery and baby!!

Hello Sarah,

I hope you're feeling better by now. do you have arthritis? if so, then nightshade foods can make it worse. for example, tomatoes, potatoes, spinach, eggplants, tobaco. I can't eat spinach (and LOVE baby spinach) all my joint hurt -- it started after my 2nd pregnancy) I'm also gluten intolerant and if I eat any wheat/gluten I get a lot of muscle and joint pain. if blood tests don't show anything...do consider keeping track of what you eat and how it makes you feel (up to 36 hours later). Good luck!

This sounds so familiar. At the beginning of my pregnancy with my first son I started to have really bad back pains. Then my joints hurt so bad that it was hard to walk or do any normal everyday activities. Then it got even worse ... I started to get shooting pains down my arms and legs that would make me suddenly lose muscle control in that limb. My entire pregnancy was extremely painful and the doctor couldn't figure out what was wrong. It wasn't until 7 years (and another baby) later that a new doctor referred me to an orthopedic doctor that ordered a MRI of my spine. The MRI showed that I have Degenerative Disk Disease (DDD). Throughout both my pregnancies, the nerves in my spine were being pinched every time I, or my baby, moved. The MRI also showed that I have sever arthritis in my upper spine. The doctor said that since I have it in my spine, there's no doubt that arthritis is the cause of all my joint pain. At the time of my MRI, I was only 27 years old.

If your pains don't start shooting down your limbs, then I wouldn't worry about DDD. But right now it sounds like arthritis is a definite possibility. You are probably not going to be able to figure out the actual cause of your pains until after your new bundle of joy arrives because you may need a MRI or x-rays.

I wish you the best of luck! I know it's difficult to care for a 2 year old when you're in so much pain. I hope your pain is only temporary and you'll be able to pleasantly enjoy the rest of your pregnancy.

Sweetie I dont think this has anything to do with your pregnancy...??
Go see the Dr right away. Go to the professionals instead of guessing and asking and suffering.
How old are you? Arthritis? Are you taking meds for anything?(alergy reaction)ETC.

God bless,

Wendy

Congratulations to your soon to be newest member.

I have severe joint pain and the doctors don't know what is wrong. I have gone to physical therapy and it never worked. With having one child already and one one the way, I can see stress coming up a lot in your life.

I am on a new regime in the mornings. I am taking a new product called Generate 1000 that is high in colostrum...Something a newborn needs after they are born. It is all natural and I am now pain free and am able to pick up anything without feeling I will drop it. I am also going through menopause and I am no longer taking medication for it.

If you want more information, you can go to twinow.com/jlwagner. For more information, you can go to twihealth.com/jlwagner and read the newsletter. I can assure you that it will help. If you have thyroid problems, it will also help control this and eventually take you off your medication.

Please call me and I will tell you more about the product and why it can help you. My number is: ###-###-####.
