Seeking Surgeon to Have Mass in Breast Removed and Biopsied

My very close cousin is 30 years old and has a mass in her breast. She met with a surgeon whom she didn't like and wants to find another one to have it removed and biopsied for cancer. Her mother died of breast cancer at a very young age so this is a scary thought for all of us and want her to receive only the best care as I am sure anyone would for their family. Any recommendations would be very much appreciated. Thanks.

My mom just had a mastectomy last week and was very pleased with her surgeon. She had met with a few doctors and just knew that this was the one when she met her. She was very down to earth and made sure to explain everything in a way that made my mom understand exactly what was going to happen during the procedure. Here is Dr. Walker's information:

Dr. Lisa Walker

I can understand what a very scary time this is and it's always nice to have a doctor that makes you feel comfortable and helps you understand each part of the process. Best of luck!

This is no doubt a scary time for her. I am a 2x breast cancer survivor. My first diagnosis came when I was 34 (that was 16 years ago) and we lived in NJ. My reoccurance was 5 years later and we were living here in AZ but unfortunately the surgeon I had is now retired. It has been 11 years since my mastectomy (it was my 40th birthday present!). Anyway, although I cannot recommend a surgeon I do want to tell you that, God forbid if she'll need one, I can highly recommend an oncologist and also a plastic surgeon. I had the ultimate reconstruction and it went very well....no problems whatsoever.

I also want to give you a hotline number for an organization that I volunteer for. It's a support group for people with b/c called Bosom Buddies of Arizona. The hotline number is: ###-###-####. When you call the number you will be connected with one of our many volunteers who have experience b/c and can be of great support to your cousin, if needed. Check out our website: http://www.bosombuddies-az.org. There are several locations in the valley that she can join in on support group discussions. They meet once a month and everyone at the session is a survivor.

I pray this is not the case for your cousin but she should know, we have come a long way with treatments and there is much hope for all who are diagnosed with this nasty disease. The sooner we are treated the better. Many women have lived long productive lives after breast cancer, including having more children, just like I did!

I wish her the best.

In 1999 I had several biopsies and finally a mastecomy. My surgeon was Dr Cooper ###-###-####. He works out of Banner Desert (I think that is what they call it now, used to be Desert Samaritan) off of Dobson and Southern. His office is in that complex as well. If you end up needing a great plastic surgeon, Dr Patti Flint was my PS. She was amazing and works in Scottsdale and Banner Desert. Her phone number is ###-###-####. They were both highly recommended by a nurse that worked where I had my biopsies done (Desert Breast Center of of Southern in Tempe) which BTW is the only place I will go for mammograms as well. They were able to identify a rare type of breast cancer and remove. I have been cancer free for almost 9 years! They were all very amazing and going through such a difficult time were incredibly helpful. Good luck and God Bless!

Hi, I know how scared you are. I just had a scare that I had cancer on my overies. I was sent to Dr. Hatch in Tucson at University Medical Center (U of A) He specializes in female cancers. I know this a ways away but they are worth it. His assistant Dr. Winn is wonderful. She answers all your question, makes you feel at ease and helps you through the whole process. Both doctors are the best!! Dr. Hatch is in the process of trying to find a way to detect cancer without doing an invasive surgery. Here is their # ###-###-####. I wish you the best of luck with everything. L.'s mother-in-law, Connie

I'd recommend Advanced Surgical Associates (www.advancedsurgery.com). I was just seen by Dr. Damore for a breast mass last week. He was a good listener, thorough and very easy to talk to. His associate Susan Cortesi, MD did a fabulous job on an emergency appendectomy my husband had in 2006. Best wishes! R.

I highly recommend Dr. Marge Butler. I had a lumpectomy when I was 19 ( very scary for me since I was so young) and she was AWESOME. Really good bedside manner and her staff was professional and it went as well as could be expected considering the circumstances. Not only that but the way she did the incision (for the biopsy) was so careful. The only reason I can see it is because I know its there... Best of luck to you and hang in there. It is scary but it will be ok! Take care -S
