Seeking Kid Friendly Eye Doctor

We're in the NW suburbs looking for a kid friendly eye doctor for a routine exam. We just need to find out if he's near sighted or farsighted or needs glasses. We recently were told our son is a special needs child with a slight developmental delay and we're hoping to be referred to a doctor who may specialize in young children. In September we visited an eye doctor who examines 0-3 yr olds but it wasn't a good fit for our son. The doctor was a bit too cold & not too friendly with him and the whole experience just put our son in meltdown mode, especially after the dilation eyedrops. I was hoping to find an eye doctor similar to a pediatric dentist that can help make the examination a little less scarey and intimidating. I'd also be happy to hear any advice on getting a toddler ready for the eye doctor. We have a video & will be looking for books to read too. Thanks!

My son goes to Premier Eye Care in Barrington. he sees Dr. Kolton also. My son now is 10 years old and has had 3 eye surgeries before the age of two. It is never easy with a toddler but I do recommend Dr. Kolton. We have been going to her for about 5 years now. My son never had any problems going to see her and we were going every 6 months for the past 5 years.

Hi Judy, Dr. Kimberly Curnyn is an absolute wonderful dr. She is located in Elk Grove and my daughter has been going to her since she was 2, she is now 6. She specializes in children and almost all other optomitrists know her. (She is really good and well known throught out IL. and other states). She even performed eye sirgery on my daughter 2 summers ago and was great. If eye drops don't go over well with your child for dilation, she will give an eye cream(which my daughter uses) that does the same thing. You put the eye cream on when the child is sleeping and it dilates them over night. I love her and would not go to anyone else. Good luck. If you need her number I can find a card, just let me know. She has 2 offices, 1 in elk grove, the other in Arlington Hts.

HiJudy, I take my kids to Premier Eye Care, they have an office in Buffalo Grove and Barrington. They see Dr. Kolton, she is fantastic with the kids. My daughter is 5 and has been wearing glasses since she was three and I have never had a bad experience with the office or staff, they are all great! My son was premature and she treated him in the hospital and for follow-ups and was just great. The dilating drops sting a little, so I suggest preparing your son for that. Otherwise, their office has tons of toys and kids around, so mine always seem too distracted by the "fun" they are having and she does the exams very quickly. Good luck!

We also go to Premier Eye Care in Buffalo Grove. They are awesome with the kids. My son has major speech issues, so it was a challenge to test his vision. They were great and did what worked best for him!

My 2 year old daughter goes to Dr. Debra Fishman. We see her in her Wilmette office, but she also has a Hoffman Estates office I think. She is wonderful with the little ones. My daughter got glasses at 22 months and has had no issues with the doctor at all!
