Hi K.,I feel your pain, we have 3 cats and one of them has been peeing on things and it's hard to get rid of that awful odor, but I do have a few suggestions. One, make sure you have an extra litter box, some cats prefer to pee in one and poo in the other. If they aren't cleaned out regularly they may just find somewhere else to go. We found that helped with having mulitple cats. Make sure it's not a urinary tract infection, medication could take care of the problem...also stress (if it's a high anxiety cat) can contribute to this by any major changes lately that could bring it on (get meds to calm). The other thing is that I too had searched everywhere for something to get rid of cat urine odor and FINALLY found the product that REALLY works, and it's safe for my children to spray and breathe and won't hurt the animals (I spray it directly onto my dog to get rid of that wet dog smell after rain). Sometimes, spraying is a learned behavior that wont go away with neutering. However, sometimes with major changes some cats don't enjoy sharing a litter box.

Do you have 2 separate litter boxes for each of them?

This may help. Otherwise I really do hope that you can get this under control.

If he's not fixed, that might help, if you can clean the area that he is peeing in with bleach that also might help, our one cat did that when he had an urinary infection... or maybe fixing him will be good because he is trying to doninate the other male you have. He may also start to pee over the younger one!!! Good luck

This happened with our "younger" cat and unfortunately nothing helped :-( we surrendered him to the humane society a few months ago. It happened from about age 2-8 years...we just loved him too much to get rid of him. It happened at both of our houses and usually only in the basement...when it moved to the "living" areas we had to do something. The people at the humane society were really nice and they don't euthanize unless they are dying, or, sick which he wasn't, but they also won't adopt him out. They keep him as a therapy pet to visit nursing homes. It was really sad to see him go, but also nice to know that they would take care of him anyway. Best of luck to you.

If a male cat isn't fixed before he reaches mating age he will spray or mark his teritory. Especially if this is a new environment or if there are other male cats around. If he is fixed before he reaches that level of maturity, he won't mark because he doesn't have the urges with his lack of hormones. Getting him fixed now could stop him, but it's not a promise because some males never stop once they have figured it out. My mom has had trouble with this. It DOES smell horrible and it is hard to catch them doing it. I would talk to the vet about it, maybe their is something you can do about it. I know with pets, our thoery is that you get boy dogs and you get girl cats. Good luck to you!

You could try this...my sister had a cat that would pee on any clothing-clean or dirty that was on the floor, or in baskets on the floor. She locked him up in a small room (bathroom would be good) for a week. She was told to try this from her vet. You can let him out for the kids to play, then put him right back in. Keep his litter and food in there with him. It worked for her...but she had to do it twice I think.

Question #1. Are they fixed?
#2. Is the house new, or new to you?

The younger one is "marking". It could be that if the house is a new to you house the previous people may have had a cat that marked. And he could be smelling the left over smells.

If he is not fixed then just getting him fixed may stop it. But its not a 100 percent thing. Some fixed males have a very strong scenting drive and will still mark.
Do you spank him when you catch him? Now, I'm not talking about whipping the cat.. But if you catch him grab him like a momma cat would at the scruff of the neck. and take him and put him in the litter box. Warning* He may not stop peeing so carry him away from you and try to swing him away from your feet.*
Do the cats share a litter box or do they have their own? Has it been replaced with a different kind recently? (Open/ enclosed etc)Has it been moved to a different place? Changed brands/types of litter?

My cat had a unirinary infection when she did this.. I would advise you take him to the vet and find out the reason.

Also, for the odor I work with a company that has some amazing products that can eliminate the smell, and they are environmentally friendly!

My Mom had the same problem after we all moved out. Our beloved cat who never had a problem started peeing everywhere! He was really pissed off (sorry had to!) :)
First, I would make sure the cat doesn't have any serious issues like an infection. What my mom did (and I realize this makes you a prisoner in your own home, but it works) is put down aluminum foil wherever he is peeing the most. They don't like to walk on it and you can find the pee easy if he does. This worked for a little while for her than he started moving it and peeing (he was MEAN!) so I read online to put down that plastic floor protector stuff. They sell it at ACO on a roll. People use it when they want to keep an area of the carpet clean. I don't know it's formal name but it's hard and one side is smooth and the side you put on the carpet is pokey. It's been my experience that older people have it in their houses alot. Anyways, put the poky side up and lay it wherever he is peeing. He will not walk over it. Than slowly remove a little at a time until it's gone...It seems to be working for my mom, he hasn't peed in a month BUT her house looks ridiculous with the foil and plastic runners everywhere. I hope you find something that works! Cat pee is the WORST!!

My parents cat is about 12 years old and was fixed, but the sack that this spray is in was not removed. Not really sure how that works. Anyway they were told it was a territory thing because they also have a female cat in the house. The smell is horrible I feel for you. My parents ended up taking out all the carpet in their house and put in hard wood and put the cat on "kitten prozac". Guess what...it worked! Good Luck!

Sometimes two male cats just don't mix, it depends on the history of the little one. It's a good sign he's going #2
I have had cats my entire life I am now 33 and have 3 currenly. Do you know for sure its oreo and not the older cat? just cuz it hasn't happened before you got the new kitty dont just suspect the little guy. Maybe your older cat is jealous? maybe the younger guy use to be an outdoor cat. Sometimes if its the younger one for sure, he may want to go outside and they do this to pay you back if your not there to let them out. Are they outdoor cats? my last suggestion is to change the type of litter. Example if you use regular litter such as tidy cats, I know its more expensive, but switch to clumpable litter. ( this usually does the trick) if the other above things aren't the issue. It is very hard to decide. Sometimes cats especially males have a problem with their urine and they will pee to let you know, its caused from too much taurine in their food. My guess is the litter, thats the easiest to try first, also you should have two boxes. My two out of three cats pee in one and poop in the other. My third ones doesn't care and will pee and poo in the same one. They do have personalities of their own. (wierd I know, but true) I hope these things help. To get the smell out try a product called KOE (Kennel order eliminator) it available from the vet. I had a cat that had accidents and one the sprayed it took the smell right out.

Is the cat fixed? That will usually stop them and if that doesn't work he'll need to be an outdoor cat.

I had the same problem when I moved into my house. Used, Febreeze, candles, sprayed, etc. Finally decided to rip up the carpeting. Found that the owner before's cat had peed all over the carpet. My cats were only going where they knew another cat had gone. Best thing I did was rip it all out, put a primer down and put new flooring in.

Have you had the cat checked for a urinary tract infection? My cat just started doing this also and I found out she has an infection. They associate the liter box with the pain so they will not use it. Hope this info helps and you can find a solution to your problem.

As far as getting finacial help with neutering, contact a local shelter and see if they can help with cost.

Is he peeing or spraying? There is a difference. If it's pee, I would recommend retraining him to use the litter. This will require time, crate training etc. You can ask a shelter how to do this as well. If it's spraying. I'm not sure what to do to get him to stop. Maybe a shelter or vets office can help with this. Anyway, good luck. I know how hard it is to have a cat pee on things. I had one too several years ago. I loved her and didn't want to get rid of her either. Unfortunately, I never solved the problem.

Go to the library and get the book that explains how to retrain your cat. Also contact an IICRC certified carpet cleaning company to come in and clean your carpet(maybe both sides), replace the pad, clean the walls and baseboard (if needed) and clean and reseal the floor. This is if all this even needs to be done. Maybe it's not that bad. We own a company like I described and have done exactly all that for a couple that had two cats (no kids). We took care of four rooms for them and they retrained their "kids" cats. It may not be very bad, but get an estimate first. Hope this helps.

Has the ct been fixed? That can make a huge difference. Also, with more than one cat, how often do you clean the litter box? We have three cats, and only one is a male. We sometimes have trouble with him peeing other than in the litter box.

We clean both boxes every day. As long as that is done, we only have trouble with him if there is some kind of change. We had a friend and her two kids stay with us over the summer. He apparently did not like the change and started to pee on things, even thought the box was clean.

If you haven't already, get him fixed, clean the box every day, and perhaps keep two litter boxes - one for each cat.

Check out the humane society for getting him fixed. That may be the cheapest route.

Call the humane society. They do offer reduced prices for nutering your pets if you recieve state aid. They also offer lower prices than most of the vets around town, I've taken my pets there for years, and have always been happy with the care they have given my pets. Good luck, as sometimes having a male cat fixed after he starts spraying doesn't help to stop it.

I have worked with animals in Michigan for years and currently sit on two Michigan boards for Animals, although cats are not my specialty, I can offer some simple advice.

Getting another cat would help, not only with this issue but with compainionship. And get him neutered! Cannot stress that enough for any animal! The detroit MHS offers a program that is around 25 dollars.

I would also suggest something very strange. Male human urine. Placing a small amount where you are having the most problem will detour the animal. Then cleaning with a good stripper that you can purchase at your local vets office should do the trick. If you cannot afford a good stripper use vinager with pine sol.

It also works good for gardens to keep deer or other animals out!

Don't give up, aldut cats are put down almost immediately at any Michigan shelter right now, please keep that in mind.

What i did is i took it to the vet to check it out and then he told me to get some little pads to put on the floor so he wont pee all over you. Sorry to here about it!!!!!

Put your younger cat in one room with a litter box and let him stay there for a week until he learns to use the box again. You can still go in the room to play with him and make sure he also has food and water in the room too. I had the same problem with one of my cats too when i moved. I kept him in a room for awile with food and water and the liter box. Then he started to use it again. You just have to retrain him again.

I am in the same boat. I have to get her to the vet to see if its medical. I am sooo sick of cleaning up pee!!!

We sure love our pets, don't we? We'll do just about anything for them too - and for our kids who love them. Here's my 2 cents. 1. Take him to the vet to make sure he doesn't have any physical problems or issues. If he is clear medically, your vet may have some ideas or references to someone who can help with cat behavior problems. 2. Confine him to a small room or in a large cat cage when you can't watch him every second or are not actively playing with him. This will at least limit the areas he can pee in - and may give him time away from the older cat who may be part of the problem.

I've also heard that putting his food in the areas where he is peeing can help - but who wants food all over the house???

I have a few suggestions, as I've been there done that and It stinks. I'm a huge cat lover and my cats before my children were my life. If you can believe it when I would find the pee I would just cry b/c I didn't know what to do. Here is what I used to do to cover everything.

If they there is usually a reason...Medical, which is the best and easiest. Have you taken him to the vet to see if he has a urinary infection? Very common in male cats. If they pee right in front of you that is usually the case. My male cats gets one of these every couple of years and he pees so I can see him and now I know right away he is sick.

Behavior - tough one - Once a cat pees he might always pee. If there is a change in situation they might pee to let you know they don't like it and want a change. New house - Could there have been a cat that lived there before him? Male cats are ver territoral. Are you gone more? he might be saying I don't like to be home alone. I know this sounds stupid but they are crazy creatures and want things their way. Are you sure it's the little one and not the older one?

I had a cat that peed on clothes every time I left them out or in a basket. I had a cat that like to pee in duffle bags, back packs. Every time my step kids would come over or my hansband would leave his clothes around, my cat would pee. It was terrible I was contantly picking up things to smell them. Before bed I had to make sure all backpaks were put where the cat wouldn't get to them.

Try getting another litter box, if you have 2 kids you should have 3 boxes. 1 cat one box but once you add multiple cats they say you should have one more box then cats.

Behavior meds - This is a stretch, but I was desperate and loved my cats dearly. I put my one cat of kitty prozac. However, that didn't work either. Sad ending I ended up just putting my one cat down b/c anything my husband , boyfirned then would set down, she would pee on it and it didn't matter where it was, couch, floor, sink, bed.

I had another cat that had the same problem once we moved, she never adjusted to the new house and dog and we got rid of her. Some cats just need a new home. They do not like change.

I only have 1 cat now and it's nice and sometimes I still find pee, but I have a nose for it now and it's not that often, maybe twice a year.

As for the smell, I have tried all products on the market and nothing can rid of the smell of cat urine. The best thing I ever used was Pinesol and poured in right onto the spot and let it soak for a few days.

It's been six months since I down a cat and I'm ready for another one but not sure Im ready for problems again.

I talked to a friend of mine and she suggested having Oreo checked for a bladder infection.

Just another thought, my friend adopted a cat that was abandoned in an apartment someone was cleaning out and he was peeing in her heater vents. He had a urinary tract infection and the vet gave her a free sample of special food that he ate for about a month and he stopped peeing in the house and only in the box now. She too was ready to get rid of him but now he has become a really great cat. His pee was sort of reddish by the way if that will help you figure it out.

cats, especially males, are prone to feline urinary disease which causes obstructions, and they leak foul smelling uring everywhere. Take kitty to a vet, and start using one of the urinary health cat foods, available at pet supply stores, feed stores, vet supply stores, etc. Many brands are available that are not all that much more expensive than regular food. Your kitty is in pain and suffering as much as you are. good luck, L.

Could be a urinary problem or bladder problem. How often, also, do you clean the litter boxes? I have 3 cats and when they don't use them, either it's time to clean them out or it's time to let them outside. When warm weather comes they tend to want to go outside.
If the cat has a bladder infection, common with males by the way, I can tell you what to get. And it'll be effective, save you money at the vet (personal experience: I had my cat at the vet for this urinary problem, they cathatarized him, he didn't improve. I took him home, was advised a homeopathic treatment and it works every time.) Let me know. Hopefully you live around Ann Arbor because it's the only place I know to get these pellets!
Here's yet another thought. My one cat decides at the very last minute he wants to go out. Just as I'm closing up for the night. Like I want to wait around till he's ready to come in? If I refuse him, he will come up to my room and lift his tail and spritz. Good to have a bottle of that Urine Gone stuff around.
But do let me know if you want to try this remedy. If it is a case of urine infection.

Hi, over my lifetime,I am 55,I have had over thirty cats and have had THAT problem come up a few times. Is he neutered? If not, that is a MUST for he is marking his territory. He could also be marking the "new" house. It is an exasperating problem.Most cleaning products smell good to us but they one mask the scent to your cat.He will return to the same spot. There are products that actually "eat" the urine with bacteria but they don't smell better to us. They do however remove the scent so hopefully your cat won't be attracted to the spot. NEVER hit or punish your cat. He is doing what is natural and punishment with only confuse and frighten him.I had sucess once, upon the recommdation of my Vet,putting the cat in a dog crate with food, water and a small litter box so he'll be forced to use it. Have you had the cat spayed. Its a jealously thing. You can also try getting two separate litter boxes. He is marking his turf.

For the smell the product is called smell be gone, it is a little pricey but works excellent.

The cat may have a urinary infection and should probably be taken to the vet to be checked out. That is what the problem was with my cat. It hurts when they pee in litter box and they will continue to look for a place to pee that it dosen't hurt. As for the pee smell mix a bottle of 3% hydrogen peroxide, 1 tsp. soft soap, 1 tsp baking soda, and water together in a bowl. Pour this on the spot where the cat has wet, let it soak in for several minutes and then use a wet vac to suck it up. You may want to do a small spot to be sure it does not affect color of carpet, etc but I have never had a problem. I have used this recipe many times and have even poured solution on living room recliner where my cat wet. Got a syringe for giving shots to a horse from the vet (keep this away from kids)and injected it into the padding!!!! After several days of drying out chair it has NO cat smell and good as new! First thing you should do is make sure that the cat doesn't have a urinary tract infection because that could be the reason. If he doesn't have one, then its a behavorial issue and that will be much harder to solve. You mentioned that you had just moved into a new house...he could be marking his territory. I have 4 cats right now and two of them started marking our basement right after we got brand new carpeting. Nothing will take the smell out. Cats can smell something like 1000 times better than we can. The only way to get the smell out all together is to replace the carpet and pad. I have tried every product I could find and nothing worked. They kept going back to the same spot because they can smell it still. We finally replaced the padding and steam cleaned the carpet and that helped a lot. But they still marked it so we resorted to buying two huge cat cages for them and that is where they stay until we take them out when they are supervised each day. We figured it was better than taking them to the pound where they would most likely be euthanized. No one is going to adopt a cat that has those type of issues. The other thing that you could try with him is putting him on a kittie prozac. Its quite expensive but its being tried on cats that have behavioral issues. I tried it on one of my cats for a few months but he still pooped on the floor but I may not have tried it long enough. Sorry that you are going thru this! I feel your pain because you don't want to get rid of them but they in turn are destroying your house. Its a really tough situation.

The first thing to do is take your cat to the vet. A good number of peeing problems are the result of urinary tract infections. Secondly, try two litter boxes. Sounds like the young one is asserting dominence over the older one. I would highly recommend The Cat Practice in Birmingham. They have amazing insights on felines - but they are not free. The Humane Society has the best prices on fixing. You could also try the Animal Welfare Society on John R in Madison Heights (between 11-12 mile). They might be able to help with fixing to save the home of the cat.

We had a cat with the same problem...it was a bladder infection.
Bladder infections are VERY painful especially when they urinate.

They associate the litter box with pain and will not get into it.
We took our cat to the vet and got him on antibiotics.
In the end he still would not get back in the litter box and kept spraying.

We loved him but had to take him to put him down.
But sometimes they recover.

My daughter and son in law put aluminum foil over the spots for a couple of days and the cat stopped. Don't know why but that's the advise they were given and it worked. Good luck.

Is the cat fixed? It could also be crystals in the urine. If there was a cat in the house before your family and you moved in, it could be the contributer.

To help get rid of the smell, use the stuff called urine be gone. I'm pretty sure that is what it is called. It was advertise on TV.

I hope you are able to solve this problem.

Have you gotten him fixed yet? He's marking his territory. Git him fixed and that should stop.

My mother has the same problem with her cats, both males, from the same litter. I think your kitties are having territorial issues. The younger one is probably trying to mark the house as his territory. Also, was he upset by the move? Did the people who lived in the house before you also have kitties? Either of these could be contributing factors. If you don't want to get rid of the problem kitty, here are my suggestions:
1. Consider letting your kitties be indoor/outdoor cats, unless you live on a busy street. This may or may not work, but it will give them more "space" to work with.
2. Buy a steam cleaner! Just keep in mind that it's best to let the cat pee dry, vacuum, and THEN steam clean. My mother has killed two steam cleaners by not doing this.
3. If your cat pees on the floor at any specific times, like when you're asleep or away at work, invest in a bunny cage and keep the kitty in the cage during those times with food, water, and a litter box. It's not the best solution, but it's better than getting rid of him.
4. If all else fails, see if any of your family or friends are willing to adopt the kitty. Also not ideal, but your family will still be able to see him.
5. DON'T put him on tranquilizers! My mother's cat also has kitty anxiety and is very jumpy, so at one point the vet gave him kitty tranquilizers. He did nothing but lie there and sleep, the medicine gave him the munchies, and he STILL peed on the floor! Not a good solution.
Keep in mind that once a kitty starts peeing on floors, it's really hard to get him to stop. My mother has had her cats for 11 years, and the "problem" one has been peeing next to his litter box for most of that time.
