Does anyone know where I can go to get tutoring for my 7 year old child who is in the 1st grade, mainly in math? She is having trouble subtracting. Is there a website that I can go to get more help for her?

What can I do next?

There is a website called "iknowthat.com that has wonderful math activities, and you can vary the difficulty by age level. It focuses on making the math concrete for easy understanding and allows that child to self correct.

I know nothing about Little Elm, however, as a stay at home mom, I know tutoring is expensive. In Plano, tutoring is usually done after school for 1st graders at no charge by one of the 1st grade teachers at the school. This way the child is taught and graded according to the style and rules expected of him. Plus, It's free! You're child will feel so much better about themselves as well as confident in acheiving academically. Win-win!

I have recently found a lot of web sites with free "tutorials" for children I will be happy to send them to you. Also I have been dealing with this with two of my children and wanted to tell you some of the things my kids school counselors have come up with. Check with your high schools National Junior Honor Society many of these students need tutoring hours and tutor elementary and middle school students many times in your home. We have a program here called AVID (its wonderful) my son has a tutor that comes to his school once a week just for him and they go over any help that he needs.
I just tried to copy and paste the sites I found last night but it wants to navigate from this page so it would be easier to do in an email if you would like them.

Hope this helps.

Oh my gosh-- you should not worry about it! Subtraction isn't even a "TEK" of 1st-- this is a 2nd grade skill. There are many websites to practice; here's one: http://www.aaamath.com/sub.htm#topic1
and another:
http://www.internet4classrooms.com/skills_1st.htm

The kids are only expected to know the basic concept in first; the "facts" come in 2nd. In first, counters are used-- you can get beans, cheerios, blocks, etc. This way they use those items to visualize the problem on the page. They aren't time tested on subtraction really until the end of 2nd. However, just doing the worksheets help--search for free printables, or you can get those big practice books (Barnes and Nobles)-- and just do a few a week. They sell the books for each grade, and that will give you some idea of what is expected from each grade. However, some books are a bit more advanced from what the state of Texas expects from each grade.

Hope this helps!

(I have a 2nd grader and Kindergartener and volunteer at school all the time, including tutoring...)

Hi Tracey -

I have located several tutors from craigslist.org under "Lessons". Most are college students and they will come to you or you can suggest a Library to meet at. They generally range from $15 - $45 per hour.

Try Mathfactscafe.com or google: math games.... do you use manipulative's? I had to use various items to help my son who was a 2nd grader 9 yrs. ago... your child may be a visual learner and need to see 8 m&m's on top and 5 m&m's on the bottom... if you eat 5(not really)...how many are left? play lots of games that teaches the concept of taking away or subtracting.... even in the store.... when you are shopping... you point out 10 boxes of mac & cheese and you tell you daughter you will buy 4 boxes how many are left on the shelf... be creative... sometimes with subtraction...it just takes a bit for their sweet little minds to connect! There is a store in Lewisville called Home Educators Resource Store. They are on Main.. they have some great workbooks and games and manipulative's.

I do not know about a tutor but my 2nd Grader came home from school one day and showed me a great place for learning math on the internet. Go to LISD.Net home page. Click on the parent's and student's tab on the top of the page. On the right hand side of the page under Links click on SchoolWeb Elementary Schools. On the left of that page is a list of schools click on Polser. On that page there is a list of sub catagories click on the name Hurd, Tiffany. On that page click visit my website. On her page is Something called Fun For Students. There are several fun things to do on that page for each school subject. Math has 6 different games. My child likes Math Magician. His older brother is in the 6th grade and has some problems with Multiplication. He thought the games were fun too. My 2nd Grader's teacher showed them the site at school. The page has been put together by her child's teacher. Hope this helps you out.

Ask the teacher or contact the local middle school math teachers, they may do afterschool tutoring. It may be a cheaper option than going through a Sylvan or Huntington-type independent place. My next door neighbor teaches middle school math & tutors 3 to 4 days a week as a way to supplement his income. We're in Flower Mound, but I'm sure this is available locally.
