For the last 3 days, my 4 year old girl has woke up with a red bumpy rash on the left side of her face and both of her upper arms. It seems to get better as the day progresses, but returns every morning ?! There have been no changes in our home & she has not been around any other kids, I am baffled . Any thoughts ?

What can I do next?

I would wonder if it is something that got on her bedding that she is having a reaction to. Try changing the bedding and see if it helps.

if it goes away during the day it is most likely a heat rash. Change her sheet and dress her cooler for bed...or buy cooler more breathable cotton sheets. Sweat can pool on the skin causing a rash.

My first guess would be your laundry detergent - the sheets. Kids can develop allergies to things that didn't bother them before, or she could just have very sensative skin that is easily iritated. Try double rinsing your sheets, or a different detergent and see if that helps. Good luck.

has there been any animals sleeping in her bed? sometimes it can take a few years for allergies to come out. also if she gets hot in the middle of the night or or maybe drools, that could also cause a rash if she is sleeping and gets sweaty or her face is sleeping in drool. just some options.

Hi C.,
I'm A., mother of 2 (6 & 3). This could be from her diet, the soap you are using or just an outbreak of excema. First, has she been eating any different allergin foods? Peanuts, wheat, soy, even different fruits?
Second, you may think about changing the soaps/lotions that you use on her. Do you bathe her at night? This could be the trouble. My suggestion would be to try an all-green wash/lotion. My daughter has "allergy skin" b/c she has a wheat allergy. I have been using Arbonne ABC Baby products on her since December and it is totally gone - disappeared after 1st use. I'm a Rep for the products and have samples if you'd like to try this on her and see if it helps. (100% botanical, hypoallergenic, pediatrician tested, no chemicals or dyes, etc.) You can w/b or call me ###-###-####. Best of luck to you!

Hi C..

I hope you find the cause of your daughter's rash. I had something very similar and the Pediatrician could find nothing. Here is the kicker... I noticed that when my son's crib sheet was the "chenille-type" fabric and not the soft jersey or cotton fabric, it did not appear. I don't know what type of sheet (barring silk, yikes!) you may be able to try. I am afraid of the future with my little man. They did test him for cotton allergy and it came back negative. The rash appeared on the side he seems to favor while sleeping. I don't know if it helps, but maybe it gives you another direction to brain storm from. Good luck!

Is she allergic to the laundry detergent residue on her bedding?
We use Arm N Hammer's perfume-free kind.

My son had a similar thing.......It may be the type of mattress you are using....... My son got the rash when ever his skin came in direct contact with the plastic of the mattress..... Maybe you could try using two sheets instead of one for an extra barrier

Hi C.,

Even if there have been no changes it is possible that whatever it is has built up in her system and is now showing symptoms. Synthetic chemicals from the laundry detergent/softener, bath and body products, or even the preservatives in her food could be building up in her system and now the toxins are trying to get out. We have SOOO many more synthetic chemicals on the market now than we did when we were little that it's hard to dodge all of them. Some children have far worse symptoms to chemicals than bumps so it's good you caught it early.

My recommendation is to use nontoxic products in the home, avoid fast foods and processed foods and get her a good absorbable multivitamin. All of these things will build her immune system so it will be able to fight any reactions to synthetic things. Detoxing the home is quite simple and can be inexpensive as well. Avoiding processed foods will also help your shopping budget and my kids don't get sick anymore...

God bless!

Could be laundry detergent, bedding (wool, feathers, formalehyde - which is in everything manufactured)
Check a/c filters, too.

C.,

Have you by any chance changed laundry detergents or fabric softeners recently? I went through this with my husband a few years ago - at first we thought it was fungus, rash, who knows......and then we discovered what you did - it was primarily on one side of his body, on the side on which he generally sleeps. We switched to dye-free fragrance-free detergent and dryer sheets, and haven't had any problems since.

Good luck!
