All kids are different. Some kids don't night train til 5, 6 or 7.
Kids with special needs potty train much later than 3 or 4.

During the day,my 5 yr old daughter has been trained for over 2 years. No accidents, nothing. However, night time, she wears a pull up and it is soaked every morning. It is my understanding that age has nothing to do with it. It is the development of the the body, and when it happens, it happens.

During the day most kids should be trained by 3, definitely before 4, for day time, but at night it is a matter of body maturity and could take much longer since it is a physiological thing and not a mental one. If a child has special needs than day time training may be much later as well, depending on the child and the severity of the disability.

during the day or at night? At night I really don't think there is an age that is too old because kids can't help it and most doctors won't medicate until age 8 or so. During the day I think a child should be day trained by 4 at the very max.

Depends on the child. If the child had a medical condition or special needs then the use of a protective diaper would be appropriate.

Typically they would be potty trained by those ages though. And if they don't have any medical/developmental issues then the parent needs to be actively working with the child on training.

If you are talking about at night, it can take up to age 6 for a child to be "nighttrained". The body has to be physically ready and also has to secrete a hormone that aids in night time dryness. If around age 6 the child isn't night trained, then it's time to discuss with a physician to rule out any physical issues. If not exist then you can try bed/body alarms to help train the body.

I put pull-ups on my daughter once and then threw away the rest of the package. I think they are completely detrimental to potty training development.

First, let me say, nighttime is different. We didn't have a challenge, which I attribute to luck. So, she never wore pull-ups at night either. But I wouldn't be opposed to a child with a developmental delay wearing them at night.
But for a child with no physcial delays I wouldn't start potty training until the child is able to stay dry for naps and nights - once they are ready you go!!!!!

Potty training is a developmental milestone. IMHO, I believe that the child needs to be 'in charge' of potty training - similarly to how they were 'in charge' of taking their first steps, saying their first words etc - they were ready and did the work, we made the environment conducive to their success and cheered them on! The child has to be ready. Part of that is intellectual and part of that is physical. Pull-ups get in the way of BOTH: Mentally, the child doesn't associate diapers with a 'lower' level and so the motivation to 'graduate' to big boy/girl undies isn't there. Physically, pull-ups eliminate the sensation of 'wetness' which is essential to potty-training.

So, although potty training is very individual with kids on each end of a spectrum I would say that when your child is 'ready' to potty train they should go from diapers to undies - and that can vary. I think the 'average' age is around 2 1/2.

no pull-ups.

During the day, 4 is too old for pull ups. Any child going to school is too old for pull ups, unless there is some physical problem that makes it a necessity. They should be totally trained by then.
Night time, however , is a different story. Many kids have problems at night and it is not necessarily a result of poor training. When they get too old for pull ups, there is a brand called "Good-nites" that is specifically for older children that wet the bead.

During the day I do not think a 4, 5, or 6 year old should be wearing pull ups at all. If they still have accidents at night then I can see having them wear them.

I just have to say that every child is different. I have been trying to potty train my son for almost 6 months now and he is just not ready. He just turned 3 last week and we are in pull ups. I dont really think you should put an age on it because that just makes things worse. Everyone always tells me that I should have started potty training at 1 so he would be fully trained at 2! I mean there might be some kids that can do that, but not mine. I would just say follow the cues and work with it, DONT FORCE POTTY TRAINING, it only prolongs it and could have an emotional effect on them! Good luck. Oh and I agree with night time training, that takes way longer than daytime training!
