Protecting a Newborn from Mom's Cold

I am 4 days past my due date, and I just came down with a nasty cold. My other kids also have it, and I suspect its just a matter of time before my husband succumbs. I'm really nervous about having my new baby get a respiratory infection in the first day or two of life. I know he's getting antibodies from me now in utero, and will get more from my milk, but of course I'm nervous that won't be enough. My other kids didn't get their first colds until much later. Anyhow, just looking for some advice / encouragement! Thanks!

Thank you all so much! I'm relieved to know the baby should be healthy!

If you have a cold the baby already has the cold in their blood including the antibodies. I wouldn't worry about it.

I actually had really bad colds during the delivery of both my kids. Kinda makes it hard to breathe effectively, but that was the worst of it. Neither child ended up with a cold or respiratory infection. You're protecting your little one now, probably even better than if you weren't sick. Best wishes for a safe and healthy delivery. Congratulations!

The baby will be fine. Breast feeding will help, too. I was so sick after I had my 2nd. I got two ruptured eardrums. Se never got it.

I always get a cold right before I go into labor. None of my kids got the cold.

I don't know why, but it seemed like my son didn't get my colds. Wash your hands, sneeze into your elbow. It'll be fine. If you need the extra reassurance, call your ob-gyn or pediatrician on Monday to get reassurance. :)

I'd expect you to be over it in a few days. IF you still have it when you go into labor you'll be in the hospital for a day or so, use a mask.

Then when you come home sequester yourself and the baby in a clean room that has been sprayed down with Lysol. It kills germs and dries quickly.

I had a nasty cold with my second and my oldest had strep. My baby did get pretty congested the first week of life. I had a cool mist humidifier, little noses saline drops and a nasal syringe. Just be prepared so if baby is a little junky you can clear it out for your little one. My other two weren't sick until much older, hated it! But my middle man is now three and perfectly healthy, minus the broken arm he got last week dancing on a small table.....but that is another story! Congrats!!!
