Prenatal Yoga - Washington,MI

I really enjoy yoga. I haven't kept up on it for about three years or more, but I'm really feeling like I want to get back into it. However, I'm six months pregnant. I cannot find any prenatal specific classes near me. The lady up the road who teaches says she can accommodate me, but I feel like I need to keep tabs on myself, as I'm not 100% confident that yoga instructors consider the delicacies of pregnancy and yoga. I've heard along the way that certain postures are unsafe during pregnancy, but no teacher I've talked with agrees fully. Anyone have experience doing yoga in a regular class while pregnant? What should I look out for? Certain moves I shouldn't do? Thanks much.

What can I do next?

They offer Yoga mom's (along with Aqua Mom's) through Beaumont Hospital. The classes are held at Beverly Hills Club in Beverly Hills on Southfield Road. You have to sign up through Beaumont Hospital (800) 633-7377. I believe yoga in $70 and aqua mom's is $115. Good luck!

If you're comfortable with doing your yoga workout from a DVD, I would recommend Shiva Rea's Prenatal Yoga. It's produced by Gaiam and you can buy it through Amazon. I did it with both of my first 2 pregnancies - haven't gotten into it yet with this one since my morning sickness ended. The great thing is it has 3 women with modifications for each trimester. All of the moves are simple and great for pregnancy. I found that I felt really good after doing it. Need to start it up again... (I have the older version which I'm not sure is still available, but I'd bet the new one is just as good!)

During pregnancy, the poses you should not do are the inverted poses. Also, you should not do anything that has you lying on your back. Some gentle twisting poses are actually very good during pregnancy because they help release tension in your back.

Good luck!

I did yoga til I was 8 1/2 months pregnant (got too disproportionate!) and I never did a specific prenatal one. I just followed the pregnant lady on the video instead of the non-pregnant people. :) The videos usually have a beginner, an intermediate, an advanced, a pregnant person, someone with knee problems, etc, so you can watch a specific person.

The only moves we couldn't do was the one where you lay on your belly on the ground (snake something?). Instead you do cat curls. And when you do intense stretching on the floor with your legs, you use the bands so you don't overstretch (because we have the hormone elasticin already doing that for us). You can't do anything on your back either- when they get to that at the end, the pregnant lady just laid on her side until the video was over.

Other than that, you can do chair and downward dog and everything else! Downward dog went a long way to helping me not have ANY back pain this pregnancy! Amazing! So I would suggest just getting a yoga video from the rental store! There are tons. They should have prenatal yoga ones too!

I don't know, but what I would do is call a prenatal yoga place even if they are not around you and ask them. Just explain to them that you don't have any prenatal yoga classes around you, but if you were to do a regular class what are some things you should watch put for? I apologize if I wasn't much help! Congratulations and good luck!!

When I was pregnant, I took pre-natal yoga classes through the City of Dearborn. We met at a school, one night a week.

I've never taken regular yoga classes, so I can't really tell you what was different. But, I did really enjoy the classes, so I hope that you find some.

Hi LH. I don't know the answers myself, but I have a friend in Utah that is a yoga instructor and has prenatal classes, and cancer classes. If you don't get the information on here, then email me directly and I will contact her and find out what to avoid for you.

Hello,

My name is R.. I have done yoga on an off for over 12 years. I did do yoga during my first and only pregnancy. I was advised by doctor and yoga instructors the same ... do not do inversions and twists of the abdomen. As for other postures your body will tell you when to stop. I felt I got consistent information. So sorry there is no Pregnancy Yoga in your neighborhood. I currently drive 30 minutes to get to the studio of my preference. Good luck with your return to yoga.
