Hi P.- I believe it's called elimination communication.
I'm still working on potty training my almost 3 year old- does great when she has to pee, but will not poop in the potty!

"Diaper Free! The Gentle Wisdom of Natural Infant Hygiene" by Ingrid Bauer describes both the philosophy and the practical how-to's of living a diaper-free lifestyle

"Infant Potty Basics: With or Without Diapers-- The Natural Way" Less than 100 pages long, this book by Laurie Boucke is practical and to the point. Full of practical tips for getting started and dealing with special situations

"Infant Potty Training : A Gentle and Primeval Method Adapted to Modern Living" (also by Laurie Boucke, I believe)
Over 500 pages long, this is the first comprehensive book on EC. Full of practical information, research, as well as testimonials from parents from all walks of life and their experiences with EC.

There are also a couple good listserves on yahoo (and I'm sure other places). Let me know if you want the group link I am on.

Two books:
(1) Diaper Free Before Age 3, I forgot the author's name.
(2) Diaper Free Baby, Christine Gross-Leh (I think I might have the wrong last name), but the book titles are correct.

Both of these books basically dicuss the potty training method called EC (Elimination Communication or Elimination Awareness)... they generally try to avoid the word "training". The process is great... it focuses on process and communication rather than results, therefore it is really fun for both parent and child since there is no pressure for results, success, etc. My 16 month old son loves sitting on the toliet with the toliet insert. He is aware of when he needs to urinate and actually will put the toliet insert on the toliet when he needs to go... or he will take my hand and walk me to the bathroom. He is still in diapers and will be for a while, but I am confident that he is enjoying the process and is aware of his need for elimination.

Have fun!

I think what you are referring to is called "Elimination communication" or "E.C." It has other names as well.

Hello P.,

You heard it from me! LoL. that is how we ended up chattin a little. The book is called "The Diaper-Free Baby: The Natural Toilet Training Alternative" and the method is Elimination Communication, or EC for short. The book is by Christine Gross-loh and you can get it at the library, amazon.com or other bookstores. There is a website (many infact) that are dedicated to the theory. Truthfully, what little experience I have had with it works amazingly well! BTW, nice to see you here, and hope to chat again sometime. take care lady!

I do not think that is very succesful, in Europe is the best mother who's child is potty train the earliest.
But I think it leave psychological mark, my sister was started at 9 months potty training and she was done by 1 year. That is the only accomplishment my mother is talking about.
I'm gald that you can homebirth, not all of us are that lucky, I have end up in ICU after I had my daughter.

Hi P.,
I think what you mean is Elimination Communication.
Do a google on it.
I just started - as of today actually!, my 8 month old daugher going on the potty.
She can't even crawl, but I'm pretty good at timing her so I don't think this should be a problem. When she went today did she peepee, and she was soooo happy about it.
I got to know she was ready when she started complaining to have her diapers changed for about 3 days ago. She also laughs and wants to be picked up any time we go potty, so they were her signs to us that was ready for it.I keep her potty in the kitchen, since that's were we are for most of the time.
Good Luck,
L.
