I went to the doctor today for our first checkup. They did the ultrasound and found im roughtly five weeks and four days along. The tech couldn't make out what was in the sack with no heartbeat. She thinks im going through a miscarriage or its a blod clot or it could still be my baby. Could it be that im just not far enough along for to make out the sack. Im only 19 and in great health and no family history of miscarriages...

What can I do next?

Sounds like you are too early to hear a heartbeat.
With my 2nd daughter they told me I had a blighted ovum.
After a few ultrasounds (vaginally) my little Carly had a heartbeat. It was just too soon....
Best of luck

If it is a miscarriage, trust that it's for the best. It often happens that a mom's body doesn't quite have everything in place the first time for creating a healthy baby, so the first one miscarries. The next pregnancy can produce a healthy full-term baby. That's what happened with us. It's hard in this in-between time of uncertainty, but as much as you can, just relax and know that whatever happens is for the best. And who knows? As you said, maybe it is a healthy baby in there!

It is awful early to tell. I would give it time. There have been countless cases where the ultrasound at that early doesn't catch everything.

L., Keep your thoughts positive. I miscarried at 12 weeks, but I insisted they do tests because it was my 2nd in about 6 months. The baby had chromosomal problems. Anyway....it is possible that the heart beat is too faint to pick up on the equipment. Its tough to go thru and waiting is really awful but keep your faith (whether you're religious or not)and relax. You are in my thoughts and prayers. Please keep us all posted on how thing go for you!

A bit early. A good embryo heartbeat develops at 6 weeks. You should ten beable to see the embryo and the yolk sac with a heart beat. I think you just got there a few days too early. I am suprised they even did an US before 6 weeks unless it was after a confirmed positive test and they did it to get dates because you were unsure. Do not stress and have those extra hormones working in your body. Just take it one step at a time for now. Enjoy being without a period and still feeling well.

You're still pretty early in the pregnancy. I wouldn't be surprised if it is still too early to see clearly. Besides, unless your body works like clockwork, it is possible that you are not even as far along as you think. With my last pregnancy, I should have been at least 6 weeks along (they told me 8) based on the dates, but I was really only 4 weeks.
Good luck!!!

I don't think family history has any effect on miscarriages. I was the only one in my family to ever miscarry. As for what might be happening, I would go with what the doctor is thinking. Hopefully that's not the case, but they do ultrasounds all the time and know what to look for. One thing for me, what that my morning sickness suddenly got better and my mood and other things related to pregancy subsided. I was 12 weeks along and it was only a week and a half earlier that my doctor appt. told me my baby was doing great... had a strong heart beat and everything else looked find. SO a person really doesn't know when it might happen. Just be ready if it does and know that over 25 percent of pregnancies are miscarried, so you are not alone and will have much support. Take care :)

I went to the doctor at 6w3d and it took the ultrasound tech over a half an hour to find the baby. Then, she couldn't see the heart beat but was finally able to view it on doppler. She said if I would have came in a few days earlier, we wouldn't have been able to see the baby. I think it all depends on how good the equipment is. With my previous pregnancies, I was with an infertility doctor and we were able to even see limb buds at 7w. I would ask for a repeat ultrasound in a week or so. You should be able to tell then. In the mean time, I'll say a prayer for you and baby!

I agree with Zehra. Your only 5 weeks honey!! The doctors wouldn't even schedule my first REAL ultrasound until I was 10-12 weeks. Dont' worry just yet {Easier said than done I know- I've been there} I went in at 15 weeks and it took 3 people to find the hearbeat! Now that little "missing heartbeat" is a year old and a chubby little happy girl.

DONT PANIC! I was 12 weeks when they couldn't hear a haertbeat and when they did an ultrasound everything was fine. Techs don't always know what they're doing and eqipment isn't always accurate. Go in and insist on a vaginal ultrasound if you're worried. Don't stress...get lots of rest and take care of yourself. Congrats

Well I was on the ring so my husband and I decided to come off of it to help get my system back in order, my last period was August 5th. And I know I wasn't twelve weeks pregnant. So they did the ultrasound to find out how far I am along. And thanks Kendra, yeah it is really hard just playing the waiting game. When we told our families, they were kind of heartbroken cause it being their first grandchild. But we are going to try and see if my hormones are where they should be we will ask for another ultrasound. Thanks everyone for your kind words and prayers and we are hoping and praying that we are just not that far along yet to even have a heart beat.

Yes it is possible that you are too early to tell. I had an early ultrasound and there was a sac but they did not see a baby so they thought that I was having a molar pregnancy and gave me info miscarriage and d&c. That daughter is now 3. Have your hormone levels checked for a baseline and then checked again in a couple of days to make sure they are going up. Good luck!

At 5 weeks, it is very hard to see the heartbeat. I would give it another 3-4 weeks and see if they would do another one. With my 3rd, I had an early u/s and we couldn't see the heartbeat at 7 weeks, when I went back around 12, they could. I now have a very happy 3 year old. :)

Af I remember correctly at 5 wks 4 days you wouldnt see the heartbeat yet. How far along should you be is the question.
Was your last period over 5 wks 4 days ago then it may be true. I miscarried at about 7 weeks and they never seen a heartbeat and I had a sac with nothing in it. About 1 in every 3 miscarriages end in miscarriage. It doesn't matter how healthy you are, it could happen. It's possible that you are far not enough along yet.

Hey L.,
I'm only 19 too and the exact same thing happened to me. They couldn't find a heartbeat with the ultrasound and only saw like a sac of blood or something so weren't sure what was going on. I had another ultrasound like 2-3 weeks later and they found the baby totally fine and the blood sac went away. Turns out i was a couple weeks earlier then what they originally thought. Now i have a healthy 8 month old girl.
good luck. i'm sure everything will be fine.

Are you bleeding at all??? Because that is the MAIN sign to watch for.

It is VERY possible that they just couldn't get a good reading on the baby. Did they do an internal (vaginal) ultrasound? Because if they only did the one on the outside of your belly, being this early they are not as accurate. Especially if it was one of the smaller ultrasound machines. (At least that's what the doc told me when he did one at the small town hospital with one.)

Try not to worry about it because stress can cause a miscarriage. (I've had 4 and am possitive the last one is because I would have panic attacks THINKING about having another miscarriage.....The babys' heart stopped beating at 9 1/2 weeks, miscarried at 11 weeks.) I know it's hard not to worry but just try to keep your mind busy with other things. Good luck.

They did a vaginal ultra sound. I have not had any bleeding but my tech told me from the look of the sack that it may have started to miscarry. But we are hoping and parying everything is fine and its just too soon. They drew blood today then i have to go back in 48 hours to have blood drawn again to see if there is any changes in my hormone levels. But I have noticed my self that some of my symptoms have subsided like my mood swings, cravings, tiredness, cramping, and my breasts are not as sore as they used to be. Thanks for all of your support and keep us in your prayers!!

It's too early to tell. I just wanted to add- ask your doctor about it, don't listen to the Tech. I suppose it probably depends on the rules of specific hospitals/clinics, but in my experience they are not supposed to say anything about possible diagnosis to you. When I was pregnant, the ultrasound techs could not even say if it was a boy or girl...they hinted at it by telling me "well the baby has something sticking up right here" and I asked "so you're pretty sure it's a boy then?" and they said "well, we're not supposed to say. But it does look like there is a little growth right there...". Same thing with X-rays and MRIs...The technicians cannot tell you anything.
Also, it seems like most places don't do ultrasounds until around 10 weeks. By then you will know for sure what is happening. If you have any bleeding in the meantime, go back in right away.

I guess you had a vaginal ultrasound done.Sometimes heartbeat can be seen only at 6-6 1/2 weeks. It could still be early to see.checkout the link

Are you bleeding/spotting right now? Did you have your progesterone levels tested? I had bleeding early in both my pregnancies and had to take progesterone supplements from 6weeks-12 weeks to stop the bleeding and have a healthy pregnancy.Have your progesterone levels tested. Keeping fingers crossed for you. Hang in there.

We found out today that we are indead are going through a miscarriage. The doctor didn't even call when they said they would. I had to track her down to get my results which were given by the nurse, not the doctor...They told us that we had to have three four miscarriages before they would invetigate as to why it was happening which is heartbreaking. My husband and I did agree to try again but it is so hard cause im so worried it is going to happen again...But thanks for all the love, support and prayers as we went through this tough time!

Hi L.:
I am so sorry the ultra-sound tech is putting you through this. It has been my experience that nurses and techs at doctor's offices and hospitals will sometimes make a diagnoses or a statement that is totally wrong. Sometimes they are trying to help and will say things, thinking that they are helping and they end up scaring the patient. I would call the doctor's office and speak to the nurse and ask that the doctor call you so you can ask questions. When you talk to the doctor tell him/her what was said and by whom. The ultra-sound tech should be spoken to by the doctor and told not to say things that can scare the patient.

Hi L.,
wait a week or two and go again...if there is no change in size or still no heartbeat, the Dr. will tell you if it's a miscarriage!! To have a miscarriage at any age is actually pretty common, most of those miscarriages happen because there is a chromosomal defect!and the body get's rid of it!
So,instead of having a sick baby, you should be happy that this happened,if it is really a miscarriage! And if you want to try to get pregnant again, you only have to wait until your next period!Good luck...

My heart goes out to you, L.. Waiting to see if you are miscarrying can be just awful. I miscarried at close to that time, but I was bleeding a fair amount, and they confirmed it with the hormone levels. I'm glad they're taking your hormone levels, since that ought to tell you a lot. I don't know what they expect to see at an ultrasound at that point, but I can't imaging that it's much; I had an ultrasound with my last pregnancy at about 8 weeks, and we hardly saw anything, just a sac with a heartbeat (she's now 19 months old). So try to relax, and I hope you get good news from the blood tests. An inconclusive ultrasound this early certainly isn't bad news all by itself.
