Positive Pregnancy Test Just 11 Days After Sex

Hello,

My last period was May 2nd. My husband was away a lot this month so we were together one and only one time, on May 13th. On Friday, May 24th, I figured I'd take a pregnancy test---having known some women who got a faint positive just 10 days after ovulation, I thought hey, why not. Well, to my utter shock, there was a faint positive...so faint I had to strain my eyes to see it, but it was there! I took several more in the days that followed and the line is still showing...a little darker each time, coming up a little quicker each time. If my calculations are correct, I am medically speaking (since date of last period) only 3.5 weeks pregnant...if counting just from the time of conception, that would put me right around 2 weeks.

I actually had an appointment with my OB-GYN about something else and so of course mentioned my positive test. He seemed to have a really hard time believing that my last menstrual period was on May 2nd, that intercourse was on the 13th, and that a faint positive showed up on the 24th. So, he said...well, let's take a look, and he did a quick ultrasound (not a transvaginal one) and said he saw absolutely nothing, ordered some lab work and told me to come back in 2 weeks. I'm not sure what he possibly expected to see given how early I am in the first trimester.

In any case, my husband's birthday is today and it has taken all my will-power to keep this a secret. I'm planning on making a special dinner tonight and sharing the news with him...but I'm sort of bummed about by this appointment. I mean, it truly is too early to see anything, right? In the meantime, I made a new appointment at a different practice with an OB-GYN who is supposed to be wonderful...that appointment is June 13th.

So What Happened?

Thanks for the responses. I think there's a bit of a pitfall in testing so early and getting a positive...it almost would have been better had I waited until the missed period, rather than drive myself crazy like this. Now that I think about it more, it's near impossible that at 2 weeks pregnant a doctor would see anything with an external ultrasound. And that's exactly what I am. 2 weeks, 2 days pregnant according to conception, and 3 weeks, 6 days according to my last menstrual period. I think he thought that I was making a mistake with the date of my last period so he did that to see if I was further along. In any case, I'm moving forward with telling my husband...I see no reason not to...I am pregnant and ought to celebrate that with him. I'm sure in the coming weeks everything will prove fine and if, G-d forbid, it does not, well then at least I'll have the support of my husband! :)

I knew I was pregnant the moment it happened with my second child. No way could I have kept any info like that (even suspicions about it) from my husband! Worst case scenario: you're wrong and have to try again ;)

When I got pregnant with my youngest, I got strep throat within a couple of weeks. I knew I was pregnant - even though my OB appointment wasn't going to happen until I was 8 weeks along. The people in my regular docs office thought I was crazy because I was only about 2 weeks along and really, lady, how could you know you are pregnant?
Needless to say, I was right... My HPT was positive... I knew my dates...
The OB doesn't want to see you until they can see something...
Relax. Tell your husband about your positive HPT. Don't keep secrets. You want his support no matter what.
Then enjoy his birthday.
YMMV

With my first child, I "knew" I was pregnant several days before I missed my period, but waited to take the test until the day after just to be sure. With our second, I "knew" I was pregnant and took a test 4 or 5 days before my missed period. It was positive and accurate! You generally only get a "false negative", not a "false positive" with urine tests. Either the hormone is there or it isn't. In your case, it is.

So... congratulations! What a wonderful birthday gift for your husband! Of course they wouldn't see anything with an ultrasound. My guess is that he was checking to see if something was "wrong" with your body more than a baby. My sister had twins and they didn't show up on the ultrasound as "two people" until 16 weeks! No worries... enjoy your evening!!

You really have to know your body. I knew the night I got pregnant with my daughter. Everything just felt different. I missed my period and by then I started to fell a little sick in the morning but that was it.

Congrats on your new addition to the family.

Hubby was a little upset because the fun was over and the deed was done on the first try. He had hoped for a longer time span.

I don't think I'd tell your husband at this point. I don't know why your doctor did an external ultrasound, to be honest - that has me a little puzzled. But he doesn't really seem to think you are pregnant.

Since he saw nothing in your uterus, I'd be really worried that this could be either NOT a pregnancy, OR an ectopic pregnancy. I wouldn't want to devastate my husband with getting his hopes up and then dashed. But that's just me.

June 13th is right around the bend. Why not wait til then?

Please start pregnancy vitamins right away. You need folic acid to prevent neural tube defects like spina bifida and some forms of cleft palate. The FIRST 8 weeks is critical for this and why you need the pregnancy vitamins even before you know you are pregnant.

Good luck!!

I think its too early to tell your hubby. My OB did a transvaginal at 5.5 weeks and was able to see a sack, but I doubt a regular u/s would show anything at 3.5 weeks.

One:

I don't think I would say anything to my husband until the blood test came back. It's really early. So much can happen in the first 6 to 8 weeks. Not to be a Debbie Downer, but really....

It's insane that your doctor did an ultrasound at that appointment. He wasn't going to see anything anyway. I'm glad you knew better than to expect anything. I'm glad to hear you are switching practices. i would too!!

Good luck!!

You definitely should have had a vaginal US. Glad to hear you will be seeing a different OB. You will be seeing this person for the next several months- better to get the right fit sooner rather than later. Have fun telling your husband and congratulations!!!!

Of course you should tell your husband that you got a positive pregnancy test, but I would add that it's too early to know for certain if the pregnancy is viable. One of the pitfalls of finding out about elevated hcg levels so very early is that if/when your period comes along "as usual" you realize that it's actually a period AND early miscarriage.

Our hormones can fluctuate too, and there's a possibility that your body "thinks" it's pregnant. Chemical pregnancy.

I really would not tell anyone other than your husband for a while until you can confirm with a blood test AND ultrasound that you're for-certain pregnant. Two weeks finding out is simply too early to know for sure.

My last period was April 29. I ovulated on May 13. My period was supposed to come on May 27. I tested that morning and got a positive. I took 3 more tests the next morning and all were positive. I'm due Feb. 3

There is no way that an external ultrasound would see anything at your point in the pregnancy. Tell your husband and enjoy your pregnancy :)

I never could accurately read those tests that just show a line or not. Go and buy yourself one of those ClearBlue Easy Pregnancy Tests. They are a bit more expensive but there is no guess work involved - it either says Pregnant or Not Pregnant.

Good Luck!!!
