I'm considering buying a portable DVD player for the car for an upcoming road trip and would love suggestions on brands/models that are good quality...and others to avoid. Thanks!

What can I do next?

We bought Audiovox from Target (1 year ago) and haven't had any problems...yet. I second the other persons comment about buying the extended warranty. I did a lot of research prior to purchasing our car DVD and found that every brand had major problems and negative reviews, including the Audiovox we purchased. However, I thought I would be willing to take a risk with a 3 year extended warranty. It really didn't cost much (especially at Target)and it gives me piece of mind. I normally don't buy those extended warranties but with this type of purchase it is necessary because of the poor quality out there.

Last year I looked to see if Sony made one (knowing that their quality is usually pretty good)but found that they didn't. Maybe Sony knows the market for these type of DVDs is on the low end and didn't want to get it that type of business. Who knows?? I wouldn't think the technology would be that different compared to a regular DVD.

To correct the below mother Sony does make portable DVD players, and have for years. My brother had one for many years until her ran over it with his car a year ago(unknowingly, sad lost). It made several car trips along with oversea flights... never a problem!

Sony portable DVD players are about $130 and up if not on sale so obviously not the cheapiest route but sony puts out great products. In fact the electronic comes made by Sony that is what my hubby goes for (clock, radio, tv, stereo system, DVD player, PS2 and so on)

Here is the Curcit City link for that DVD player.

We have the Durabrand DVD player with two screens from Walmart. We paid $150 for it and have never had a problem. Our family uses it a lot! Best money I ever spent - it's a lifesaver on car trips that are two hours and longer.

We have a Durabrand from Walmart. I got it for 50 dollars the day after Thanksgiving 2 years ago. We've never had a problem with it. The also offer the service plan for I think 4 years. I believe that was 17 dollars.

We actually bought one on vacation a few years ago. It's a Durabrand, from Wal-Mart, and at first I chastised my hubby because it sounded like a cheap brand. But, we've never had any problems with it, and like that it comes with two screens. It's a lifesaver on those really long trips when car-bingo and I Spy get old!

We've been really satisfied with a Polaroid one we bought at Circuit City. I really recommend the extended warranty though. The first one we bought (not a Polaroid) we got the warranty and when it died after a few months, we were able to get the Polaroid one free.
