Please Tell Me About Your Experiences with Mirena

I had mine placed about 8 weeks PP, and have had it a little over a year with no problems. I have only had one period, and that only lasted about a day or two and was very light. (I am still breastfeeding, though, too) I had no issues at all with insertion and I don't even notice it's there. For me, it's great, since my hubby is also the procrastinating type!

I'm on my second Mirena, had a baby in between the two. 4yrs the first time and into my third year now.
The first approx. 6 months we're a bit wacky (with spotting), but other than that I love it. I merely get a period now, no side effects at all (for me at least). I'm 34 & I'll probably be using it till menopause. Definitely recommend it.

You could always tell your husband that until he gets the vasectomy, you have the perfect 100% foolproof birth control method: abstinence! Seriously, refuse to have sex with him until he gets the Big V. You've been the one responsible for birth control and having the babies, now that you're ready for permanent birth control it's his turn. If you're worried about birth control failure until a vasectomy can be done then tell him (and don't back down) there's no sex.

This worked for three friends and a sister-in-law.

EDIT: By the way, I'm on my 2nd Mirena. It's been a total of 5 1/2 years.

I've had one for about a year and it is wonderful...now. When I had it inserted my uterus didn't want to have anything to do with it so it contracted it out. I think I gave birth to the stupid thing twice w/o any drugs or pain meds or even ibuprofen. It was AWFUL b/c the contractions lasted for a few minutes. But it took the 3rd time. This was all in the doc's office. I felt it the first day or so but after that - nothing! I've spotted maybe twice in the past year and had a day or so of bleeding a few months later but that's it.

I had to notify my obgyn on the first day of my period to have it inserted and i think it was put in the 3rd day of my cycle.

gl! it is soooo worth it.

I don't have any experience with Mirena, but if you do want your husband to get a vasectomy (which, BTW, is totally and completely reasonable seeing as how you carried pregnancies and gave birth to your children), then I'd recommend making time for you to sit down with him and say "hey, we've got a couple minutes, could you please call right now and make that appointment?". Scared schmared... he needs to get over it.

I would say for you the mirena would be good. It may help with your periods and it does last for five years. I do the paraguard because I was tired of being on birth control pills because,I am over fourty years old. I would say the birth control pill is also a good option. The mirena is a little more worryfree since you will have it in place for five years. I opted to do the IUD because my husband did not want to have a vasectomy and I did not want to have to go through major surgery to have my tubes tied. Good luck

I had it for 3 year and liked it. No complications.

However, after 3 years and some research, I didn't feel comfortable not having a period anymore. While certainly not pleasant, I think it's natural and healthy for your body to do what it's supposed to, and your period is a great berometer for your "female" health. I was worried that my uterus not shedding itself the way it's supposed to would make it more prone to other problems, mainly cancers. The image I couldn't get out of my head (whether valid or not) was of a stream that flows consistently doesn't allow things to grow. Standing water that is not circulated starts growing all kinds of yuck.

Sorry if it's TMI, but that's how I felt about it, so I had it removed. Also, I'm not wierd, all evidence to the contrary :)

I have had one for over 2 1/2 years without any problem. I had it put in when I was nursing my second child so I wasn't having periods at the time and I don't have them now except for occasional spotting. I really have not had any problems with it.

LOVE IT! I had my period once after it was inserted and haven't really since then - no side effects, no worries - I highly recommend it.

You will get mixed reviews. I like mine. I've had it about 4 years. Hormones from the pill, patch, etc. gave me such debilitating headaches they were no longer an option. Plus, I'm getting kind of old for them. The hormones in the Mirena don't bother me at all. I don't really get periods any more. My Mirena replaced a copper IUD because it made my periods so heavy and gave me awful cramps. The biggest downside to the Mirena for me is that it was much more painful than I expected to have it inserted and no one warned me. I have Irritable Bowel so that probably intensified it for me. I almost passed out. I hope it isn't that bad to remove it since I have to have that done soon. Other than that, I've been very happy with the Mirena.

I had the Mirena for about 6 months and it made me absolutely crazy. My SIL had the same issue. If you're going to try an IUD, I recommend the Paragard IUD which is hormone free. I've had mine for almost 3 years without any side effects. Good luck!

I think everyone's experience with Mirena is slightly different. I had the Mirena placed 8 weeks pp with my 3rd child after talking with a few friends about their experiences. The only thing they mentioned was that they had occasional cramping. I've had the Mirena about 3 months now and I haven't had any cramping but since that day, I've been bleeding... not real heavy but more than occasional spotting. Apparently, this is normal and my OB told me to try and stick it out because 'most' of the time the bleeding will stop after 3-6 months. I'm exclusively breastfeeding and I was really looking forward to another year without my period... this has not been fun. I hope your experience goes well if you decide to get it. One definite pro of Mirena is the ease of use... you don't have to think about anything!

I asked My ObyGyn for a Doc that does vasectomies & made the appointment.
Once he got there it was no big deal, just needed a little push

I got the Mirena IUD after my son was born and wish I NEVER had! It was awful from the start. If you have done research, you must be aware of the side affects of it.

I had it removed and wouldn't recommend it to anyone, EVER!

I've had mine for 2 weeks now and so far I've had no problems. The insertion was not even painful, I just had some period like cramps for about a day after. My husband loves it too!

I've had it for 2 months and so far so good. I have the hips of a birthing goddess and I'm sure that is why insertion for me wasn't bad at all. I didn't even know it was being put in. The first day I could kind of feel it inside, but the next day I couldn't.
As for it actually being there? So far so great! I have had two periods with it and one was regular like, this last one lasted for a day, if even that. I haven't had any major mood swings, It's actually evened my bad mood swings. It's very low hormone so there shouldn't be to much of a change, but everyone reacts differently.

I got the paragard because my sister has the mirena and for her, it gives her bad pms and she said she feels like she needs to have a period and she just doesn't. She has gained weight and had bad hot flashes for a while. That scared me so im on the non hormonal one. My periods are worse and insertion was excruciating but its worth it to me!
