Odd and ADHD - Sibley,LA

ODD & ADHD are EXTREMELY different, although many people (in appropriately link them).

Its almost always found together in Spectrum kids (ADHD+ODD+ASD) totally appropriately... But it gets lumped into stand alone ADHD waaaaay often.

It helps to understand that BOTH argue... Just for different reasons.

EX) The sky is blue

ODD. No it isn't. You can't make me say it is!

ADHD. Not really. Right now its more of a grey ish white, because of the cloud cover. This morning it was pink. Before tornados its green. At different elevations it appears different colors, from a pastel nearer to white, to a deep lapis. Depending on moisture content. And, of course, REALLY... The sky is BLACK. We're just seeing light bounce off water vapor. Space is black. Except. Space isn't REALLY black....

ODD is responding to the PERSON. White/black. Yes/no. Etc.

ADHD is looking at 1001 variables, and really trying to figure it out (or share something they figured out).

MANY MANY MANY neurological disorders are found together in one person/child. So it is common for ODD, ADHD, SID(sensory), Autisim, Aspergers, Learning Disabilities, Speech Delays, Dislexyia(sp) and many other neurologically based disorders to be found together. I started with my son's pedi, there are preliminary tests that can be done by a pedi to determine if you should proceed with specialists. These specialists can be booked for MONTHS ahead of time, and it can take multiple visits/specialists to get to the "root" of what is going on. To be honest, too much information of everything is not always the best thing I would find a general knowledge website and get a basic overview and once you are more aware of what you are "dealing with' do the detailed research. One thing that I have found is that each doctor has their own school of thought and reference materials they reccomend. There is SOOOOOO much info on Adhd/Odd/Add etc and some is wrong and some is right and some is just plain confusing, the internet is not always your friend. However I do think that a PM to Reily J (in my opinion our Adhd momexpert) may not be a bad thing if she does not catch this post. I always find her information on the subject to be solid and informative.

ODD is Oppositional Defiant Disorder

ODD is out right defiant and dangerous behavior. For no reason.

My 4 year old has been diagnosed with ODD, ADHD,SPD and PDD. I am not getting into all the titles singly.

Anyways with the ODD, my son can go from a calm pleasant kiddo, literally a drop of a pin, he is in a rage and lashing about.

I have been given two black eyes(over a diaper change), We suspected a broken jaw, from a kick to the chin with hiking boots on.

He has scaled our fridge to get to our knife block, while I was in the bathroom. I then came out to him coming at me with the knife.

I have a friend that comes and helps with him during the week, she has taken a metal pole(he ripped off the bathroom wall). Tossed at her full force when she was trying to get him to calm down.

His ADHD on the other hand is his inability to sit still. He wont sit to read books, watch tv shows or even really play with kids his own age. He also has super human strength. He can scale just about anything. And just goes goes goes.

You normally see a child that has ODD, has some form of ADD/ADHD.

However, a child with ADD/ ADHD does not have to have ODD.

So ODD: Without cause can become extremely violent. Towards anyone. It is hard to get them controlled while in the rages and more often then not for me, it is safer to give him a safe place to finish a rage, then it is for me to try and stop it.

ADHD: Where the child has trouble settling down, focusing. Excites easily. Can have trouble with learning due to the inability to focus for long periods of time.

It relates because it's often a comorbid condition. ODD behavior is more deliberate, while ADHD isn't. A pediatrician really shouldn't be doing an evaluation for ADHD, unless that person has a particular expertise in ADHD. You really want to be seen by a specialist, like a child psychiatrist or neuropsychologist, for an accurate diagnosis.

You can google Oppositional Difiant Disorder and you'll get a lot of sites that you can get that information. Many kids who are ODD also tend to have ADD or ADHD.
