Not a Kid Type Question, but a Cleaning One

I have a shirt that is special to me. Well, I was cooking dinner, tacos, and the hamburg greese splattered on me... Well, how on earth do I get it out... not to mention that my husband didn't realize it and being the dear that he is, washed laundry. So it went through the dryer. I am hoping to not have the worst news (it won't come out) but am prepared...
Thank you all!

My mom used Goop to get out grease and food stains on laundry for years! It works great on most things though I wouldn't use on delicates like silk or dry clean items. You can find it in a hardware store. I usually use the oxyclean stain spray which gets out a lot of food stains (I think it is a little better than Spray and Wash). The trick with the dish detergent is good for grease too.

Make a paste of dish detergent and dishwasher detergent like Dawn and Cascade. Let it sit. Then scrub it with a toothbrush. Rinse. It's worked for me on lots of food and splatter stains.

Good luck!

Take straight Dawn dish detergent and a rub it into the grease markings with a toothbrush. May take a little bit of time since it's been through the dryer, but it works :)

I was desperate to remove a grease stain from a brand new shirt and my husband suggested I try something from his garage (crazy I know!). The brand I use is a generic called "Goop" but its that waterless hand cleaner that mechanics use. I put it on EVERY stain and have only had one stain in the last 4 years that wouldn't come out. It works on greese, grass, mildew spots...you name it it has worked for me...on numerous types of materials I might add :) I just rub it on with my fingers before starting the load, start the machine and load it up, then make the treated piece the last one into the washer.

I swear by SHOUT and of course, applying that night and not putting it thru the dryer would've ensured success. However, it may still be possible. You can scrub in Shout and Detergent and let it sit then try soaking overnight. You used to be able to buy enzyme stain removers like BIZ but they're nearly impossible to find. They were great for soaking stubborn stains. Sometimes repeated washings without putting it in a dryer and using Shout and detergent on it will get it out. Oxiclean is also very useful and you can add it to the mix, especially if the shirt is a lighter color. If it's white you can also use clorine bleach after you've gotten out the greasier stuff.

My mom (and now me, too!) swears by the blue Dawn dish soap for ALL stains. Squirt it on the spots, let it sit for a few hours, then soak as is in Tide for a few more hours, then launder as usual. Good luck!

Hello! I had always good luck with "Spray & Wash" even if the item went through the dryer because I did not see it the first time around and only when I was already folding it...

Lestoil has always worked for me when a grease stain has been set by going through the dryer. But it does have a very strong smell, so remember that a little goes a long way (pour it directly on the stain), and I usually have to wash it a couple times to get the Lestoil smell out. But it really works, and I've never had a problem with it ruining anything. Good luck!

I have often had grease spots not come out when washed (and unfortunately dried) in cold water. I usually have pretty good luck putting on a grease remover (mine is Stanley grease remover) and a little extra Tide right on the spots and then wash in warm or hot. I think the warmer water really makes a difference.

Rub Dawn dish soap into the stain and then spray with whatever spray stain remover you have. Let it sit for 24-48 hours and then wash. Even if it's been through the dryer it should come out!

Good luck!

I use a product called grease lightning. I have used it for years and with the same results as those who used Goop. I have gotten old stains, new stains, grease stains, blood stains, etc out of things. I have never had anything ruin due to using it, as I figured whatever I tried it on was pretty much ruined anyways so why not try it! I usually find this product at Walmart or Home Depot.

We always use Lestoil to get out grease. You can put it directly on the stain and let it sit for 30 min, then wash. We purchase it as Meijer.

Usually bleach FREE dish soap will get it out for me...even if it's been washed. I just spread a little on the spot and rub it in w/an old toothbrush or my tide brush and toss it in the wash.

Even worked for pine sap when we had to cut down a tree.

I'd FORGOTTEN about Goop! Have to break that stuff out again.

I've also had quite a bit of luck sacrificing the liquer cabinet (yet again) in order to clean. Everclear, gin, vodka, whathave you. Soak and scrub. Ideally, with heat. But you have to be careful. Getting out the stain, but setting your shirt on fire is a waste of both effort and booze.

Sheesh. You know you're getting older when you buy alcohol for AFTER the party, instead of FOR the party.
