I have 2 kids ages 4 and 1 1/2 and have not been having a period since May of 09. I am on the birth control pill Loestrin and the gyn mentioned that it could make my cycle irregurlar. I had regular periods (to the hour) for the first 8 months after my son was born and then nothing. I took pregnancy test the first 4 or 5 months I missed, all neg.... My Dr has since done tests on my thyroid, hormone levels, checked for anemia and a trans vaginal ultrasound all which came back normal. Then she prescribed another hormone that was "guaranteed" to make my period start within a week....welll it hasnt it has been 2 weeks. I am supposed to make an appointment on Mon to go in and talk to the Dr. Does anyone have anything like this that has happened to them? Should I be worried? All the basic things came back normal....

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for you input. The doctor said all was normal and that is just how my body is reacting to this pill. I am 31, so she didnt think it had to do with menopause at this time. Now that I know things are ok...it is nice not having a period every month.

My friend had a very similar situation. She would go without periods for months and then she would have 2 in one month. She was very irregular. She did tests and found out she has PCOS. I'm not sure exactly what it is but it causes your periods to be very irregular. You might want to ask your dr or google it and see if it sounds like any of your symptoms.

Were you using Loestrin before your second child? Each person's reaction to a prescription is different. My understanding, as I use to be on the pill, was that it made periods regular. If this is the type of birth control method you want to be on, maybe your doctor should change to another pill.

This isn't to scare you, and I don't know how old you are, but women can be in pre-menopause between the ages of 35-55. Did your doctor say anthing about that?

I hope you find out what is going on. Take care.

K. interesting question and something I have been dealing with too. I am on Loestin but have only been on for 3 months but my period has just stopped. Had it normal the first month super light the second and nothing the third. Trying to figure it out for myself. I have never been on the pill and decided to take it for some other reasons like mood swings and some pre-menopausal symptoms. I am over 40 and happy with it except for the no period thing which just makes me feel a little odd. I see my doc in another month and was going to ask him. The literature does say that you periods could get lighter and lighter....I never thought they would go away :) If you find anything out and want to share I would definately be interested. Thx.

Hi K.!

Are you still taking the Loestrin? My OB suggested that I start taking it after I was done breast feeding our 4th child, and it was horrible for me!! I have been on and off the pill since I was 21 (and am now 37) and the Loestrin has given me the worst side effects I have ever had! It caused me to have sever mood swings (my own mother suggested I start drinking when she talked to me in one of these "moods"), I was bleeding off and on all month, I gained 20 lbs, I was miserable! So after about 8 months, I finally went off of it... and I was really glad. My periods are back to normal and my moods are much better. I haven't put on any more weight, but now I gotta work harder and get this 20 lbs off!!

Just a thought! Let us know what you find out! I pray it turns out to be nothing serious.
Blessings,
B.

How old are you? I went through something similar. My last pregnancy was when I was 35yo. After the delivery, the time between my periods was getting longer and longer for a few years. Eventually they became lighter and didn't last as long. I like being regular so the infrequency was driving me crazy. Pregnancy tests at various times were always neg. The doctor put me on Yasmin for a year around age 43. I missed a day or two of pills for one or two months, so I thought I'd screwed it up and that's why I wasn't menstruating very much or at all. Got kind of confusing. Anyway, doctor just continued Yasmin for another year. After another 6-9 months, though, I decided to stop taking the Yasmin. When I went for my next annual check up at age 45, she suggested that I could be menopausal. Subsequent blood work showed that I was indeed menopausal, definitely on the young side. Hope this helps.

Hi K.,

I too am taking Loestrin and the same thing happened to me. I haven't had a period since I've been taking it. The first couple of months I took pregnancy tests too, just to be sure. My doc said that with this pill, some people just don't get a period at all. So, that is what it is for me. Kind of nice not to have a period, but I wonder what the long-term effects of that will be. I am going to go back on a regular pill my next visit.

Good luck!
M.
