Hi. I will be moving to Houston from New York in the summer. I need to find a school for my son, who will be in fifth grade next year. He is currently in a "gifted special ed" class. He is gifted in math, but behind in writing. He is also very ADHD. Please help, D.

What can I do next?

Are you looking for private school? If so then try the Monarch school or Briarwood school. Both are very good with ADHD. For public in Spring Branch ISD there is Valley Oaks

You should check out the Regis School of the Sacred Heart. It is an amazing place (I used to teach there), and all of their teaching is geared toward teaching to the male brain. If you are familiar with any Sacred Heart school then you know that they value academics as much as character development. Check it out at www.theregisschool.org. I will ask around about some other schools with "special ed" programs. Are you looking for public or private?

Two excellent school districts are
Katy ISD http://www.katyisd.org/
Cyfair ISD. http://www.cfisd.net/
Katy has excellent programs for gifted kids. Cyfair has good ones and they are wonderful with special needs too (ADHD). I have lived in both areas and would recomend both. They also both have good sports programs!!(Get rid of some of that extra energy) They are side by side on the Northwest side of Houston. Both are growing rapidly and have several brand new schools. Katy is a small town that is growing fast! Cy-fair is stretched out over several small towns. Both are suburbs of Houston.
Good Luck!

Hi, D.! Where in Houston are you moving? North, south, east, west, one of the suburbs? Or do you know yet? Houston's a huge city, much more sprawled than New York. If you're moving to the southwest side of town I have several friends with the same issues, and therefore I can recommend some schools based on their experiences. Welcome to Texas!

Hi D.,

I just moved the the Houston area a year ago and I don't have a child in school yet, but I do know several teachers who have taught in many areas in and around Houston that could give me some pointers to pass along. Do you know where you're moving yet? Houston is a huge city so there are tons of schools. We are in the Sugar Land / Missouri City area which is southwest of Houston. Let me know which area you're looking at and I'll see if anyone knows anything about the schools in the area.

Best of luck with the move and welcome to Houston!

Yes Fort Bend school district is very exemplary, that's why I live out here, in Sugar Land. I guess it all depends on where in Houston you'll be living and whether you want public or private school. I have a 10 month old so I can't help you as far as which schools to look for, but go online and do your homework on it. know that Houston Independent School District is a public school district and it's not ranked that high. But each school within the district i'm sure has its good points as well. Good luck!

Hi D.! I don't know what area you will be living in, but if you are going to be in the West University, Bellaire or a close in neighborhood, the Joy School is wonderful as is Trafton Academy.
