Anyone have a recommendation for a speech language pathologist? I'm thinking of having my 3-yr-old assessed for stuttering. (Chicago or near west suburbs preferred.)

What can I do next?

I am a clinical supervisor at Northwestern University. Our Evanston Clinic would be a great place for a diagnostic evaluation for fluency. We could then refer you to an excellent therapist in Chicago or W suburbs who could assist your little one if ongoing therapy is recommended. Our fluency "expert" is Michelle Jones. My office number is ###-###-####. My email is ____@____.com. I would be happy to have you schedule a phone call with Michelle if you are interested.
Good Luck and feel free to call or email with any questions!
Sincerely,
T. Cafferty

You should call your local school district and ask them where you can have your child assessed. They do it for free, and if the child does need therapy, the state picks up the tab.

Most public schools do screenings this time of year. You could call your local public school and schedule one. My son had a slight stutter but it has since stopped. 2 1/2 - 3 is the age where it starts but can quickly stop. Your school district should be able to guide you in the right direction.

Hi-

Speech and language pathologists are hard to come by. However, if your child is under 3, you can get him assessed for free by the state via Child and Family Connection (State's early intervention system). If your son is 3 or over, he can be assessed for free via your local elementary school district. Call them and tell them that you would like your 3 year old assessed for speech and language, and they are responsible for providing the assessment, and if he qualifies, they should also provide the services, either through a district-run preschool or therapy at the school district.
Both of my children were assessed by early intervention before they were 3, and my son qualified, and has been receiving services for over a year now.

By the way, most medical insurances don't pay for speech and language services unless it's a medical condition, so check thoroughly before thinking they will. If you need more information about the 0-3 service agency, you can e-mail me. I just didn't have a minute to find it for you now.
Bravo to you for attending to us early! Good luck!

If he is still stuttering, or if it returns, get help through The Stuttering Foundation at www.stutteringhelp.org.

Communication Clubhouse is an excellent source for evaluations and therapy, if needed. It is located in Downers Grove, off of 88, Highland exit. It is an easy commute and a very friendly, educated and qualified group. CC even offers a summer camp type program for an hour or so. It was a terrific find for us and you will meet other moms and families with children w/similar delays. Good Luck
