Need Serious Help with Bedwetting

I am so embarrassed by this, I hope no one I know sees this request.

My son is 11 and in 5th grade. He still wets at night. Nearly every night.
I've asked my pediatrician numerous times, she always says they grow out of it. He's been tested for (an has had once) bladder infestions. There is nothing else health wise that seems to be the culprit.
He's been able to stay dry for almost 3 weeks about a year ago and he'll have a night or 2 here and there, otherwise, it's every night. I've tried diet changes, lmiting fluid intake, earlier bed time, an alarm that clips to his underwear, a book that 'gauranteed' to stop it- nothing in 11 1/2 yrs has helped.
He never gets to have sleepovers, he can no longer go to summer camp and if we don't stop this, he will not be able to go to outdoor lab next year. We'll have to switch schools because I'll have to tell the school why he can't go and his social life will be ruined.
My husband's chiropractor said it could be a pressure- points thing, that visits may help: To the tune of $45 2X/ week for maybe 3 months. Not so keen on that idea.
We really need help. Does ANYONE have any solutions??

What can I do next?

Hi C.,

I have not dealt with this personaly, but my sister-in-law has a 8 year old son who was wetting at night. She did some research and found that dairy can be a factor in bed wetting. She took away all ice cream, cheese, milk etc. and within 2 days he had stopped wetting the bed. Hope you find something that works!

Chiropractic is a good idea. My husband is a chiropractor in Fort Collins. He has had great success with bedwetters. It may sound expensive but your sons health is worth it. My husband has a web site that can tell you more about chiropractic and bedwetting. Just visit obergchiro.com and search bedwetting. It has some very useful info. Hope this helps.

Hi...my nephew had the same problem growing up...so did his dad. At 15 he was still wetting the bed. My sister and brother-in-law took every measure possible...even the little alarm that senses if the child is about to wet the bed and goes off. He slept so deeply even that didn't work. Eventually they just stopped trying to do anything and eventually my nephew did stop. He's in his early 20's now and is fine. My brother-in-law also 'grew' out of it. This isn't an answer, just another experience very similar to yours. I hope this helps you not feel so alone. When something bugs me and I want to learn more or do more, I love researching on the internet...it's like a brainstorming opportunity that gives me more ideas or avenues concerning whatever issue is going on at the time.

I have done much research on this - I have an 8yr old boy who still wets at night. Esp common in boys, and can go to age 12 and beyond. It is also genetic. At what age did his father quit wetting at night? We are in the process of trying the Malem alarm. He has already had a few dry nights. It's tough, it's frustrating, and probably embarrassing for him, but it's not uncommon. Check out the bedwetting store. See what they have to say and read the reviews. A $95 alarm is worth trying before sinking a load into chiropractor. (someone else gave you the email address) Best of luck.

We had the same problem with our son and a friend recommended an alarm. It had worked great for them. And, turns out it was a blessing for us too. It's a little alarm you attach on the pj's and the underwear. There's a sensor that triggers the alarm as soon as it gets humid. It woke our son up and he went to the potty with only a small spot in his underwear. It took 1 week for my friend's son to wake up by himself. And it took a little more time for my son. Maybe 2 or 3 weeks. Not more than that. He was then 6 years old.

Here's a link with more info: http://www.bedwettingstore.com/Bedwetting_Alarms/malem_be...

It's not cheap, but it sure is worth it! Good luck!

Your not alone! I have a 13 year old son who has the same problem! I felt the same way all these years, it's so horrifying and h*** o* them! We tried EVERYTHING, and nothing worked for him. He refused to give up sleepovers so he would discreetly bring a bag with his "protection" in his backpack and wear big sweats to bed. Same thing for outdoor lab. I heard the same thing from our doctor, and it took me 12 years to finally accept it. It's slowed down tremedously for him now, it used to be pretty much every single night, now he hasn't had an accident (that i know of) for the past few weeks!! My doc said it could last until they are 16-21!
It's definately more common than we know, a friend of mine who's child has the same problem, just called the school when they went to outdoor lab and told the one teacher she could trust to help out with this so it could be discreet for her child.
As for the chiropractic thing, I don't think that's a good idea for kids. Once they go to a chiro doc, they have to go forever, not a good idea.
I know there are some ppl out there that don't understand the bed wetting thing for older children, and that's sad that they can be critical.
But don't worry, your not alone!

Hello C.

No reason to be embarrased... You should make some phone calls to OTHER Chiropractors in your area to find one who will charge less. If you are in the Denver area, you might go to Vitamin Cottage - they have great customer service people who are very knowledgeable - ask them for help finding a naturopathic remedy. Best wishes for your son's health!

C.,
I have 5 sons all of which have this problem my 12 yearold just bearly stopped wetting, at 11 I worried about him going to scout camp this month because I Was worried that the cold would be a trigger an incident then he would freeze, or something horrible like that. anyway my house reecks of urine and that has been my life long fear and now IT has happened and I am fine with it now, oh well, I don't care. we will get over it. but I Have tried many things to stop the problem and even waking them up several times a night doesn't work by the time I get to them at maybe 11 they have already wet so, thanks to your request I Am going to try the dairy thing and see if that helps because mine did have milk allergies as babies. hmmmmmmm. I Guess we will see.
DOn't feel embarrassed. it is more common than you know.

I would consider accupuncture also. Patty Wang on Hampden near I25 is really good but cost $60 an hour. It sounds like there is something wrong and a pediatric Urologist might be another person to talk with. Is he haveing emotion problems? Is he accepted at school?
Good Luck
