I am 14 weeks pregnant with my third child and am experiencing severe pain in my right lower body from a pinched sciatic nerve. Has anyone experienced this and have recommendations on how to deal with the pain? I am thinking of going to a chiropractor or physical therapist to help work it out. Can you recommend one that can work with me being pregnant? I have no idea how I can survive 6 months in this much pain. Any recommendations greatly appreciated!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you all for your advice! One of my friends called me out of the blue and I told her my situation. She had just been to her chiropractor the week before for sciatic nerve problems. She told me to cross my legs ankle to knee (like a man usually does) and lean forward and back to stretch my hip/thigh area. I did that for several days and on the 5th day I had great relief! I had my prenatal massage scheduled 2 days after and that was wonderful. I've been doing fine since.

Thank you all for the advice!

Get with a PT who is trained with pregnant moms and focuses on the abdominal area and pelvic floor. I think there is one in Mckinney. You will be so amazed at the relief. M. T

I would recommend going to a P.T. ASAP and they can give you exercises and mobilize your hips or sacrum in the correct position to get pressure off your sciatic nerve.

Hi B.,
I am a personal trainer and have worked with this problem with some of my clients. Either professional should be able to show you some stretches to do that will aleviate you pain. I recommend Summit Physical Therapy near the intersection of Frankford and Preston or Peak Pysical Therapy in McKinney on 380 just west of Hwy 75. I also highly recommend Dr. Mark Zuber on 14TH Street just east of Preston. ###-###-####). Of if you need someone in McKinney try Russel Chiropractic on Virginia.
Hope this helps!

B.,

I too had a very painful pinched sciatic nerve during my pregnancy. Sometimes when I would get up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom, the pain would almost bring me to my knees. Anyway, I spoke to my OB about it and he suggested I sleep on my left side exclusively- something to do with the blood flow, take warm baths, and to go to get massages appropriate for pregnant women. I went to Relache at the Gaylord Texan and was treated like a queen. I only went about every three weeks, but it worked wonders. If able try to stay off your feet if able- but I know with two other children under foot this is easier said than done. Another suggestion he gave me was to put my feet up higher (I used a little step stool) while I worked at my computer at work. This helped to alleviate most of my pain. Good luck.

I also suffered with severe back pain during my pregnancies. Make sure you tell your OB so that he could possibly prescibe PT and your insurance might cover it that way. I also have alot more relief with a chiropractor as well. With the two combined it will help strengthen your back in the right places plus bieng adjusted into the right place. My chiropractor also prescribes massage therapy which is then also covered by my insurance plan. Do a little research to see what your plan covers so that you can recieve as much care as possible for as little out of pocket as possible.

I had the same thing with all 3 of my pregnancies. What I did was a massage therapist. Many times when pregnant it's actually your muscles that clamp done on the nerve or pull on the bones to have them clamp down. I found that worked wonders for me. I don't know that I would feel comfortable going to a chiropractor while pregnant- just me though.
The other thing that worked well for me was to lay on my back with a tennis ball under me (right at the top of your buttocks where it becomes your back). Then I would roll around on the tennis ball. That worked great for between massages. Good luck.

Hi B.,

I had a really painful sciatic nerve and got relief from a chiropractor. My husband is a chiropractor, so it was an easy choice for me :-). His name is Dr. Kevin Smith, Trinity Family Chiropractic, www.trinityfamilychiropractic.com ###-###-####. I don't know what I would have done if I hadn't gone to him during my second pregnancy.
