Hi Moms,

I really need help on picking medical coverage for the family. My hubby is starting a job where he'll be a independant contractor. He will not have any medical coverage so we have to purchase it. I have been looking around & It's a little head spinning thing. There are many companies out there & pricey. Some don't offer you the greatest coverage at all. Does anyone have a medical insurance with family coverage that you have purchased on your own that is not so costly & have decent coverage with a prescription plan ? I would love to hear from you ... we could really use the help.

Thanks alot!!!
L.

go to ehealthinsurance.com - it lets you compare all different plans and see what is important to you - has different deductibles, some have prescription plans, some don't - just search for what you want and it will bring up plans that meet you needs. Everything for my son was done over the net. My husband and I have health insurance through our jobs, but it would cost $480 a month to insure my son on our plan. It is $60 a month, including dental, for his plan. He has a higher deductible, but has never been sick (knock on wood). So the $480 per month we would have been throwing away on insurance for him, can be used in an emergency to cover his higher deductible. He also has full dental for $10 per month, which covers his preventive, 2 cleanings and office visits per year, plus one set of x-rays.

We went to ehealthinsurance.com they take all of your info (ages, etc) then bring up plans from several companies, their prices and coverage for you to compare. If you are just purchasing for your children apply to healthy kids here in FL, or it may be less expensive to apply for healthy kids and purchase a separate plan for you and your husband.

Hi, L.! I was in the same situation. I paid Vista (expensive), Preferred Medical (cheaper) but the result was the same--- too pricey for the service. I ended up in a "medical plan" Best Care Maria Elena Anderson ###-###-#### it is like a discount plan but have found good doctors with minimum waiting time the "copayments" are extremely reasonable and well I think that I am getting more value for my money at $60 per month for up to 5 people.
I joined a bit skeptical but thinking I was paying last time $225 for Preferred and tried the doctors and services right away and quickly found that it was a great alternative for me. Good Luck!

This is really tough because my husband and I are small business owners that need complete coverage including maternity. We paid over $1500 until recently with United Health Care and just went through PayChex to get a lowered rate ($700 in savings!) with Aetna. Prior to United, we were with Aetna and paid a little over $1300/month. We went through brokers (which we later found out is the better way when you find someone you trust) because the individual plans do not include maternity and IF they do you have a serious copay (almost double the premium). It is head spinning, but if you want the coverage you have to pay. Pray that the healthcare reform comes through quickly! You can email me directly if you need more info - we spent alot of time on this .

Good luck!

Hello L. E,
When it comes to health insurance, it's always going to seem that you are getting way less than you're paying for. That's a given.
But, now is actuaaly a really good time to be shopping for health insurance because there are alot of fairly decent plans out there that can really work for you and your family.
And don't worry, everyone is intimidated by the language of insurance policies, it's written that way on purpose! Just make sure that the plan you choose covers the three main
areas of concern to your satisfaction. 1)Doctor
choice - do you get to choose the doctor from a list of providers your inurance plan accepts, or is the physician chosen for you?
2) how much of a hospital stay is covered? - example: 70% of entire hospital stay, or only 70% of room per/day charges.(Just pays for the
hospital room, not medications or doctor(s) that treated you while you were there. 3) is there any "preventative" care offered, (a once a year physical exam?). Best is to call and ask
an insurance customer representative from any insurance company you are considering.
And pick one you are the most convinced will take the best care of you health care needs.
Hope that helped, aaborges*

We use an insurance agent...All the plans out there can cause serious head-spinning...Anyway, he and his wife have been selling insurance for over 20 years or something like that. He is great. I told him what I wanted and he did the research and presented me with different options.
Here is all his info: John P. Marlow

HI L.....is there any chance that your husband qualifies for COBRA? If he got laid off involuntarily from his last job, you get COBRA for 35% of the cost for the first 9 months at least (it is part of an Obama stimulus act). Unfortunately, the kind of group coverage you get with employer healthplans is always a LOT better and more comprehensive than what you get as individuals. We looked over so many individual plans and nothing came close to COBRA for our old ins., especially with the 65% discount it made it soo cheap. If you need help finding an indiv. plan, please email me and I will forward you the info. to a great financial planner who sells all kinds of health ins. He is very nice and is not a 'salesman' just trying to get your money, but will work with you to find thebest possible plan.

Good luck.

Like the others have mentioned, I would definitely use an independent agent. You can tell them exactly what you need, and what your budget is, and they can help you find a plan that fits.

FWIW, I had a friend with a private policy for her family through Blue Cross/Blue Shield and she loved it. I have heard bad things about United Healthcare, so I would be wary of them.

Hi L., I work in insurance and used to sell individual policies. I would try Blue Cross Blue Shield - www.bcbsfl.com. They have a variety of plans with reasonable pricing (as reasonable as you can expect for medical insurance at least). Be careful if you want maternity included though as many invidual policies do not cover maternity. Good Luck
